"It's shut today"

by elgar22

Wherever you ask a tuk-tuk driver to take you, they will tell it's not open, it's open later/tomorrow or its no good. Even outside the Grand Palace where i could see heaps of people going in a tuk-tuk man tried to tell me it was shut! Then they will try to persuade you that they can give you a much better experience. This experience will include at least an hour and a half of your precious time being sucked up in tailors, porcelain shops, carpet shops etc. who are their "sponsors". if you want a tailored suit/porcelain/carpet that's; fine but if not galvanise yourself and give them a firm no, you can always get someone else to take you where you want to go.

Time-share Touts: Patong Beach, Phuket, 2010

by tigertribal

These guys will drive up a moped or accost you on the street, clipboard in hand and offer you a scratch card and you WILL win a prize. If you accept the prize, you will have to attend a presentation for time-share and you will be stuck there for hours. If they do approach you, just smile, say no thank you & continue walking. Do not stop and get into a conversation with them or take the card.We have never been caught at this SCAM but have talked to and read about people who have. In Phuket, it seems Absolute Hotels are the culprits.

ATMs in Thailand are a total rip-off!!!

by mariayoshiko

Whenever you want to use an ATM in Thailand, REGARDLESS which bank, they will charge you 150THB for your transaction, as a Thai-governmental tax...that's about US$5!!! Plus the commission your bank will charge you back home...so for me that made almost US$10 for withdrawing money!!! The not so bad thing is that there appeared to be no limit for the aumount withdrawed, so if you are getting big amount of money, go for it but do it ONCE, otherwise we prepared to lose your money without reason. Get a lot of money at once...OR! Do what I do: Go to a supermarket and offer to pay for someone who will pay with cash. You pay for them and get the cash! It's perfect...it's a cash advance without commission! Bring your all your money in cash and open a tourist account at any bank, it's free and you get a local debit card to withdraw at any ATM without any charges...it's a great way to go about in...

Street Vendors

by myshell...

Everyone is trying to sell you something in Phuket, so tips to remember are:- Try no to look them directly in the eye and they wont bother you as much.- If they try to shake your hand, they will drag you into their store. So don't shake there hands- Remember to HAGGLE, you can get upto 50% off your purchase if you haggle, don't feel shy everyone does it.

Local Tour Guide companies

by pinkduck

Beware of the local Tour guide operators. They advise that you do not go on unauthorised tours as they will take you to places you may not want to go but then the official tourist organisers do the same - - OK the shop may be upmarket but the philosophy is the same you are still at a shop you did not request nor did you want to go - - the driver/operator gets a commission from everything you buy. Make it well known that you are not interested in the (whatever shop) you have been taken to and ask to leave as soon as possible -- do not accept refreshments and/of hospitality as this encouraged the operators.

Hilltribes

by lauren6

People head north in droves in order to go trekking and see hilltribes. Having been almost a decade ago in Vietnam, you realize how touristy the experience all is. Save yourself some time and go to a place an hour outside of Chiang Mai where 5 hilltribes have moved due to tourism and then spend go hiking in the national parks.

private or Group Tour to the Jim Thompson House

by lauren6

Going to the Jim Thompson House is something that should be done. However, do not join any tours. In fact, the only tours that are allowed are by guides provided at that location. Therefore, your tour guide drops you off at the front door and you have now paid for 2 guides. Get there by yourself and enjoy.

Tip Photo
Tell them NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO shopping

by shiraz49

This is not a major problem but it can seriously cut into the time you think you have for getting around to the sites you want to (or think you had time to visit) ..... We had organised a private tour to take us from around Laem Chabang (Pattaya area) to visit the Tiger Temple near Kanchanaburi, overnight in teh area and rturn the next day (it is a long trip) ........All went well until day 2, after an early start and arriving in Bangkok we enjoyed lunch and when our guide suggested a shopping detour we stupidly agreed ..... 2 or 3 of her favorite shops, carpets/rugs/gems/more rugs more gems etc etc we were advised we were out of time and needed to head back missing out on some (we assume) wounderous sites.IF ANYONE SUGGESTS SHOPPING TELL THEM NO!!!!!

Pet the baby elephant

by USMarineRO

So there you are walking along the street in Bangkok minding your own business and trying to avoid the touts and you run smack into a baby elephant! At first you look around to see if there has been a mass breakout from the zoo, but no, you just ran into a tourist trap - and if its your first time being that close, an irresistible one!The baby elephants are there for the tourists. You can buy feed to give them, they are gentle and eat out of your hand, also you can get your picture taken with them. If you are going to feed them make sure that you have some sanitary wipes or gel. Try explaining to the doctor that you got sick from a baby elephant you met on the streets in Bangkok. LOL It is really irresistible to not get your picture made with them, expecially if this is your first trip to Thailand. But I would not feed them unless youa re preapred for elephant spittle on your hands,...
