Ko Samed, Ko Chang bungalow ripoffs

by ShenyangPeter

On the piers for ferries heading to Ko Samed and Ko Chang travel agents will tell you that it's "high season" and "the island is very busy." In fact it's "difficult to find a bungalow!"Bah! I ignored the tout on Ko Samed (on a weekend in high season) and found a decent bungalow without a reservation, no problem, at half the price suggested by the tout.On Ko Chang I grudgingly went through such a tout to get a decent price on a bungalow since my travelling companion was ill and didn't want to go shopping around. We got a bungalow for about 500 baht that looked okay. In reality, the bungalow should have cost about 250 baht for the location and was nowhere near a beach. Completely unsatisfied, we switched to a GREAT bungalow (at K.P. Bungalows) for 600 baht/night the next morning. They attempt similar rip-offs on minibus rides to Bangkok, etc. The public buses are MUCH cheaper if you can...

Pattaya

by AndreSTGT

Help!!! Get me out of here!!!That was all i could think of when i took a short side trip to the infamous beach resort of Pattaya. This place is the pits!!! Ugly hotel blocks, fat and bald Germans with young Thai girls and groups of rowdy Russian package tourists.I had intended to stay overnight, but after two hours and an overpriced coconut on the beach i decided to flee to Bangkok as soon as possible and got on the next bus. It's a miracle to me how anyone could spend their holidays in this hell hole.

Taxis

by FireMike

Taxi drivers always lie! Just make sure they turn on the meter. The quoted price would be at least triple what the meter would say. Once you take a couple metered rides and know the rough price, you can deal with tuk tuk or cab drivers. Also used the city bus in Bangkok which was really cheap.

Sneaky Tuk Tuk

by squidchip

Beware of the TukTuks taking you where you don't want to go. Some around WatPho will tell you the Temple is closed then try to take you on a sightseeing tour. Ignore them and find the actual entrance. Also some will take you to jewelry and silk stores in order to get a commision from the owners. Don't feel obligated to buy. Just leave if you want. They are pulling one over on you! Most drivers you get at your hotel or GH won't try this but others you hail along the street may. Just get out if you feel you are getting taken advantage of.

Bangkok Bars and Clubs

by Figsbury

They can be fun to visit but be wary and keep your wallet in your pocket as much as possible. If you go into the bars and clubs, make sure you go in sober and come out sober that way you'll have enough money for the rest of your holiday.

Taxi drivers.

by paz1

You've probrably had warnings before about the taxi drivers in Thailand. Some of them are initially friendly but will try and take every penny from the ride. Makes for some interesting banter. Always pre-arrange the fare and check all four tyres are inflated! I once hurriedly got into a bangkok taxi from a small marketplace. After pulling away, I realised that the car was lopsided, so much I was sliding down the seat. Luckily, it was only a short trip and when I got out, both tyres on one side of the car were flat. Amazing Thailand. You said it! If the taxi is not up to scratch, you have the alternative of the ride on the songathews, the infamous tuk-tuks or the metro, when in Bangkok.

Bangkok-temples

Bangkok temples...don't accept snakes (like I did), photos with them, touching them, whatever...without having asked first: WHAT IS THE PRICE.Afterwards they often come with astronomic prices! Don't pay so much.

Reconsider your national park visits

by felix.austria

Nearly everything, where the admission is restricted is called a National Park there. If you want to visit one of them carefully select them from the innoumerous choices. The entrance for tourists _is_ expensive (although they are still cheap compared to other areas), and: they all cost the same independent from their size. You should also consider that you can visit more than one national park (e.g. several waterfalls) with the same ticket for one day. I would definetly recommend visiting some national parks anyhow. But only the ones which are recommended by travel guides or other travellers. Other national parks ;-)

Just a small trap, but worth mentioning

by shelnlin

When we booked to go out to one of the Islands for a day from Pattaya we were asked by a gentleman if we would please stand on the beach and have our photograph taken for I.D purposes so that the people who took us over on the boat to the Island could identify us if we got lost etc... whilst we were there. We didn't mind doing this and commented on how that wasn't a bad idea and like the rest of the group we boarded that boat. When we got back from our little day out, the same man and a couple of others had set up a little table with the pictures that they had taken that morning of us and the others and had put them into a little white plastic frame and came up and offered them to each of us as we came off the boat for 100 baht! Now that was a bit cunning we thought! We did however end up purchasing the photograph as it was a nice one but for some people they may have got a shot of...

40 baht NO stops!

by beaniezotzim

In and around the Bangkok area we got duped into the tuk tuk drivers scam. You tell them where you want to go and they say tell you how much. example: us: "we would like to go to the Grand Palace"tuk tuk driver: "40 baht"sounds too good to be true huh? well it is! this is what happens: you get in the tuk tuk and they start to go and tell you "one stop" meaning they want to take you to a jewelry store or a suit maker or even a tat office where they will get paid by that establishment for bringing you there.this is how to avoid it:you: "I would like to go to the Grand Palace"tuk tuk: "40 baht"you: "40 baht NO stops"tuk tuk "40 baht ONE stop"you "NO STOPS"tuk tuk "80 baht NO stops"then you bargain to what you think is fair, just make sure that you are all clear on no stops.same with Taxis... when they stop, you have to tell them to turn their meter on, some won't and you don't want to get...
