car rental

by bulldogtwo

For a 4-5 day trip it should run you about 30-40$ per day. That should include the insurance as well. Gas is going to run you about 40$ to fill the tank closing in on empty. Both are dependant on what you rent of course. Yeah, these are stateside prices but again, as the other poster stated, it is rewarding and you can go your own pace and go where you want to go. Also something that you should be aware of and that is usually the vehicles are right hand drive. "IF" you are a competent driver it shouldn't take you too long to get used to but remember that you are starting out in a huge city and very traffic congested. It's not like you will have some open road to get the hang of things. My biggest problem was turn signal versus the wipers!, never did get used to that, everything else was ok after a fashion.Oh, and get a good map. Most of the roiads are well marked and the road to Chiang...

Out and About

by pinkduck

There are many ways to get around Bangkok - - one of the cheapest (and most scary) is the Tuk Tuk. some say to beware of them but in my experience they are worth the money and you should at least try them. Be wary of the driver who wants to take you to where he wants you to go (they usually have some cousin in the (jewlery, clothing, leather or whatever) business and they get a commission for taking you there. do not be put off though as they are a great experience.Try to work out the sky train routes - - these are cheap and friendly and fast (if you can go by sky train do not take a taxi) buy a day tripper not the single fare (unless you are only going for a couple of hours) The experience of travelling with others on the train is great and lets you see the locals in a different light. (much nicer than the pushy sales people at the markets)Walking. While not considered a mode of...

Budget airlines for mainland Southeast Asia

by seagypsy

As previously advised by Somikan and Xaver, Air Asia is the major budget carrier (and they are reported to open a second hub for Thailand using Phuket Airport). They do not fly BK>Siem Reap but they do offer BKK>Phnom Penh and quite a number of visitors then travel by VIP bus to Siem Reap for Angkor. But sometimes even the regular airlines like Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways will offer promotional fares to compete against Air Asia from time to time. Also Nok Air is a subsidiary of Thai Airways that competes against Air Asia for the Thai domestic market. And as Picek posted, you can take a train from BKK to Laos but it's actually faster just to get off in Nong Khai and do the crossing yourself since it takes the train a couple hours to clear immigration/customs to cross over. Also, Thai Air Asia and Nok Air both offer discounted airfare to Udon Thani, which is only an hour from the...

Some Thai-Lao border crossing in northeast Thailan

by seagypsy

1. There are left luggage facilities but if it's obvious that it's a laptop, I would be hesitant to check it in because of handling concerns. There are several Thai-Lao border crossings in the northeast of Thailand. The furthest north is the one mentioned by Gian, #2 above with the Chiang Khong to Huay Xai crossing. This takes you to one of the more remote crossings for Laos. As he stated, the Lao visa is really subject to which country you're from but for most westerners, it runs around U$35 and for Canadians, they think you're richer so charge U$42. Best to pay for Lao visa in U$ dollar notes. The most used crossing is the one called Friendship Bridge which is still considered the northeast of Thailand but brings you into central Laos and about 20 minutes from the Lao capital of Vientiane. \Mukdahan, also mentioned above in #1, brings you to more central Laos and this border is used for...

Cheap Express Airport Bus

by YaaDong

The airport bus goes from Suvarnabhumi on 4 seperate routes into the main tourist areas of central Bangkok.(At 150B a person ) Route AE-1 goes on the expressway from Suvarnabhumi to Silom road. You can connect to the Skytrain or subway from Silom. Route AE-2 goes on the expressway to Banglamphu. This is the one to get on for Khao San road. Route AE-3 goes to the Nana (soi 3-4) part of Sukhumvit road. Route AE-4 goes from Suvarnabhumi to Hua Lamphong, Bangkok's main train station. You can get the Express Airport bus near Khaosan Road in front of Sawasdee Khaosan Inn (18 Chakapong Rd) for only "130 baht".The airport buses run from approximately 5am to midnight and the trip takes 45 mins

Bangkok: always … “Taxi Meter”

by vtveen

Coming out of our hotel - Prince Palace Hotel - we saw taxis coming and going and as everywhere in Bangkok it is no problem at all to find one. It is pretty nice to drive around in a taxi, because they have airco and we didn’t have to inhale for some time the extremely polluted air of Bangkok.Taxi drivers brought us always in around 15 minutes to the touristy sights and we paid mostly between 50 and 100 Baht. We had just a couple of serious traffic jams, at least not as bad as we expected. Some ‘rules’ for using a taxi in Bangkok:- use only taxis with the sign “Taxi Meter” on the roof;- ask drivers to use the meter and be sure they reset it (meter is visible in front of the taxi); if they refuse get another taxi;- the taxi fare starts with 35 Baht and after the first 2 or 3 kilometres a couple of baths per km; (you will have to pay the toll fare when using express ways); - be sure the...

Chiang Mai to Bangkok by VIP bus

by seagypsy

It depends upon which VIP bus company you're using. Some of the Chiang Mai guesthouses and travel agencies offer VIP buses (with free pickup from your gueshtouse/hotel) directly to Khao San Road whereas others will take you to as above mentioned, Mochit Bus Station closer to the Chatuchak Market. If it's Mochit Station, then you're a short cab ride to the Mochit Skytrain Station right next to Chatuchak Market, or the subway too.So, the main thing is to buy the VIP bus ticket depending upon where you want to end up. Also beware that some of the VIP bus companies do not have a good reputation for the quality of their buses so 'shop' around a little bit before buying your ticket. The one's I've taken usually arrived between 5 and 6AM and dropped off near Khao San Road.

BTS Skytrain in Bangkok

by lindyz

While staying in Bangkok, if you can, book a Hotel near the Skytrain, as it is the easiest way to get around. It is very cheap, punctual and air conditioned! All of these are a real bonus. We bought a one day pass, so you could ride it as often as you like, and it cost only about $3AUD - that is a true bargain!! Also, it was very easy to buy the ticket, even for someone who had never been to Bangkok before. Our Hotel, the Novotel, was about a 2 minute walk to the Skytrain. The MBK Centre is right near a skytrain stop. Also, to get to the weekend Chatachuk Markets, easiest way is to take the skytrain, I think by memory you get off at Moh Chit station and then just walk a few hundred metres.Skytrain - definitely worth it. One afternoon, we just bought a ticket and rode the train in all directions, to every stop, just gazing out the window, watching the world go by ...

Tuk Tuk rides

by lindyz

We didnt use these much at all - we preferred to walk rather than pay them what we thought was an exorbitant fee. We only used one twice in Patong and once in Bangkok. In Bangkok they are the older original style tuk tuks which probably only fit 3 maximum. In Patong they are more like a small van, which can fit many more people.
