Ambiguous Calling Cards

by lifemagic

Be cautious buying telephone calling cards in Thailand. I was buying one called CAT calling card in Chiang Mai and was really happy. About 300 Baht, scratch off the panel, dial in and I used to get ages talking to UK. When the card was getting low I bought a new one and dialed a special number and transfered the balance over.I got to Bangkok and couldn't find one, but eventually got one from 7-11. I dialed the special number to transfer my balance from the old card, then when I used it it didn't allow 008/007 dialing, 001 landline prices only. I got about four minutes until it was almost expired with just a few baht. I looked and the card is called 'CAT thai card', and it's almost identical on the outside to the cards I'd been using. Not until the packaging is open do you see it's... for something else (god knows what? Perhaps a domestic card?), but the IDD rates are landline 008 or 007...

political situation in Bangkok

by DJ-NRG

The Thailand tourism industry is currently suffering the worst season for many years due to the political unrest in the capital, Bangkok.Violent clashes between anti-government protesters and polcie, as well as the skirmish between Cambodian and Thai troops on the border and the ongoing instability in the South are causing tourists to stay away in droves.Tourists should not be alarmed. The situation in Bangkok is very localized. There is a full report on the Bangkok situation here: http://photojourn.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/thailand-tourism-in-crisis-as-protesters-die-in-bloody-bangkok/andhere: http://photojourn.wordpress.com/2008/10/11/thailand-tourism-chief-believes-deadly-clashes-will-not-significantly-affect-tourism/

Karaoke does not mean singing!!

by sophief

Be warned that "Karaoke" is sometimes used in Thailand to mean a brothel. We discovered this when, on our last night in Bangkok, we asked a taxi driver to take us to a karaoke bar only to be taken to a brothel (despite the fact that we were three girls!). It was awful - we entered the bar expecting to find a bunch of people singing but instead found about 12 women sitting on a raised platform in the corner, occasionally being lead upstairs by sleazy male tourists. Needless to say, when we realised that they weren't about to start singing we left very quickly, but it was a really distrubing experience - those poor women.

Tuk Tuk & Jewellry

by freespirit1

You will be approached by someone who tells you what you are heading for is closed, instead for a small price a tuk tuk will take you to a temple and then a jewellry export shop where you can get a tax free deal - DON'T the jewellry is fake and I was fleeced of $2000 on my credit card as I failed to read the slip I was signing until I got home and saw an extra 00 had been added making my $200 purchase $2000.

for smokers and so on

by lucy60

Be careful when you smoke in Thailand. It' prohibited almost everywhere. For instance i some parks. Il's seems that is prohibited in every part of Bangkok. You can't smoke in garden restaurant and so on. I smoked everywhere, but I had a little astray with me, but not in some open air restaurant. It' remarkable that you cannot consume in restaurant or buy in a supermarket alchlics (includede bier) from 14 to 17 p.m.

Scams

by GracesTrips

As sited on wikitravel.orgBeware of all offers of gems and (supposedly) precious stones. These sophisticated & highly professional "special discount" scams, often involving promises of high resale value back home at a supposedly huge profit, sometimes even employ foreigners to act as satisfied customers. Beware of tuk-tuk drivers offering all-day tours for prices as low as 10 baht. You may be taken on a full-day tour but you will only end up visiting one gem & souvenir shop after another. The driver gets a commission if you buy something and gas coupons even if you don't. Insist on the meter for taxis, and agree on a price in advance for tuk-tuks. If they refuse, or quote silly prices, just walk out and get a different one, they're rarely in short supply. Be highly skeptical of anyone telling you that your intended destination is currently closed (including skytrain and subway stations),...

Mosquitos, Bug Repellent

by GracesTrips

According to Eyewitness Travel Guide for Thailand, Seven (7) of the 410 types of mosquitos in Thailand carry malaria. The odds seem pretty slim you would come in contact with one of those mosquitos! But, I don't think I'll take my chances. There are several specific products that are used as bug repellent such as Deet, Bugband and Herbal Armor. But, the product I will take with me on this trip will be Avon's Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion (Deet Free). A two for one product and it's not repulsive to put on, sounds good to me!Vaccinations are not required by visitors to Thailand unless coming from or passing through a designated contaminated area according to www.tourismthailand.org/travel-information/See LA Times article on bug repellents:http://www.latimes.com/features/lifestyle/la-ig-beauty13-2008jul13,0,3455185.story

Thailand Vaccinations

by bulldogtwo

I agree, there is no need for vaccinations. However, I would suggest the hepatitis series, I would get that no matter where I am travelling. There will be a lot of mosquitoes. As the others said, take lots of bug juice. You can also get mosquito coils in Thailand and make sure that your accomodations, if you are staying in the park have mosquito netting for sleeping, most do. Common sense and proper precautions will prevail. Having said that there are no guarantees. These are great parks to see, and you are going at a good time to see wildlife.Enjoy the trip. Take a lightweight rain jacket/suit.Have fun!

Flowers

by Gili_S

Nice flower ha? But do not try to pick up and take home the fruits of these flowers, they might be growing them in the wild somewhere, but it is not as popular as used to be, the government encourage the farmers to invest in something else.

Tip Photo
On the bikes

by Gili_S

Apparently in Thailand you are not obligate to wear helmet on a bike as well as not limited to the amount of passengers on the bike, so just be aware of it, and, if it happened that you do crash a bike while driving there you can hit as many in one shot ;-)
