Tastes so good but smells so bad!

by shelnlin

Durian Fruit Wow! Anyone who has been to Asia cannot afford to miss trying Durian fruit. It has a creamy like taste and when I first tried it, I loved it. I tried it again back home in New Zealand but it had been frozen and imported in from Thailand and reminded me of an ice cream but became somewhat addictive once it thawed out.Unfortunately despite it's delicious taste, it is often banned from many Hotels in Asia. The smell can be so pungent and overpowering that some liken it to bad socks or something that has gone off. It is pretty offensive but if you can overlook the smell and just enjoy its taste than you are doing well.I also love it as a cake which you can buy in any good Asian grocery store.... for me it can be a bit addictive!!! and have included a few photos to describe the fruit. Photos are from the Durian.com.sg website and a website on Global foods- Ali Baba.

Additional Do's and Don't

by GracesTrips

Observe all normal precautions as regards to personal safety, as well as the safety for your belongings. Walking alone on quiet streets or deserted areas is not recommended. Be sure that all your valuables (money, jewelry, and airline tickets) are properly protected from loss. Drop your garbage into a waste container. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration strictly enforcing law in an effort to keep the city clean and healthy. The fine will be imposed on a person who spits, discards cigarette stubs or drops rubbish in public areas. Do not get yourself involved with drugs. Penalties for drug offences are very severe in Thailand.Do not support any manner of wild animal abuse. Never purchase any products or souvenirs made from wild animals including reptiles like snakes, monitor lizards, turtle shell and ivory. Avoid patronizing local restaurants that serve wild animal delicacies. It is...

Don't trust Thai beach boys

by girllrig

having spent many years on the larger islands in thailand and observed the ways of the thai beach boys from a cultural and habitual perspective, i feel it might be helpful to put out some advice for those new girls to thailand who find themselves interested in a thai beach boy, as i am so tired and depressed at seeing these young, beautiful, naive girls come to thailand with no knowledge of the culture or situation and getting beat, cheated on, lied to, left pregnant or sick with STDs, and publicly humiliated by one of these guys, and sent home crying their eyes out, their self esteem ruined. here's the deal, and you might think i am being overly harsh but i could refer you to plenty of girls who learned the hard way: - it's all about sex, not love. thai guys have to work very hard and even pay money to a thai girl's family before she will let him in. in contrast, farang girls on holiday...

Don't shake hands and no PDA!

by GracesTrips

Thai people don't normally shake hands when they greet one another. But, instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a wai. Generally a younger person wais an elder, who returns it. The head, is the highest part of the body, literally and figuratively. Therefore, avoid touching people on the head and TRY NOT TO POINT YOUR FEET at people or an object. It is considered very rude. Shoes should be removed when entering a private Thai home. Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon.

Respect Royal Family and Religion

by GracesTrips

Thai people have a deep, traditional reverence for the Royal Family and a visitor should be careful to show respect for the King, the Queen and the Royal Children. Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never go topless, or in shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable attire. It is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, BUT NOT INSIDE the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept. Each Buddha image, large or small, ruined or not, is regarded as a sacred object. Never climb onto one to take a photograph or do anything which might indicate a lack of respect. Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman or to accept anything from the hand of one. If a woman has to give anything to a monk, she first hands it to a man, who then presents it. Wow!

Tuk-tuk drivers

by XBlanka

You can read this in every travelguide: be careful when the tuk-tuk driver offers you a ride for great price. The best way how to get to your destination is to show them the name of the street or guesthouse written in Thai language. They usually ask you whether you have where to sleep. When you tell them you have booked your hotel already they won’t try to persuade you that this hotel is bad, is closed or doesn’t exist.

MBK Closed?

by USMarineRO

Visited MBK shopping mall on the day of Kay Latong (Light Festival). We knew it opened at 10:30 so we planned our arrival perfectly, but as we approached the doors, several guys approached and told my companions and I that it was closed today because of the festival, but one right down the street was open and they could take us there. One thing...Shopping malls never close on Thai holidays. And the idiots couldn't stop everyone and I noticed someone walking in the doors and not turning around. I told the guys to f - off and we went on in and found the mall pretty busy.

animals in the jungle

by pawimzelf

There are many things in the jungle, thus be prepared with vactinations for area. You will be eaten by bloodsuckers, and mosquitos, and snakes, but thats live, they belong there and you don`t........In Bangkok Pucket and Pattaya you will be robbed by all the locals, if you not like that keep all you juwels and credit cards in a safe in the hotels, even the hotels are not allways safe.

Bangkok .... why this cheating … ??

by vtveen

Grand PalaceAfter arriving by taxi at the Grand Palace some ‘helpful’ Thai told us to use another entrance to buy the tickets. On our way to that entrance another ‘helpful’ Thai told us the palace was closed between for 12.00 and 1.30 pm and it was better to visit some other sights during that time. It was best to take a tuk-tuk (for just 20 baht) for transportation. After a crazy and dangerous ride through the city we came at the first sight (Wat Indraviharn). After our first visit of a Thai temple the tuk-tuk driver took us to a jewellery and a duty free gift shop, but we felt something was wrong and after another stop at a Travel Agency we refused to go further in his tuk-tuk and went back with a taxi to the Grand Palace, which was of course open for visitors.Vimanmek PalaceOn our last day in Thailand we went to the Vimamnek Palace, especially to watch the Thai dancing performances....

Watch out for mosquitos!

by jrs1234

Mosquitos! Outside of Bangkok, take the usual precautions - the good news is that except in some border areas (next to Burma and Cambodia especially), malaria is rare - see the US Center for Disease Control's webpage at -http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationThailand.aspx#mal_riskfor more details on this. If you get bitten, be sure to buy some Tiger Balm (available all over Thailand) which is really good at making the bites go down - it works for me!However, you do also need to be aware of Dengue fever. This is potentially fatal and there is no vaccine; it's spread by mosquitos, and the best advice is not to get bitten. The good news is that away from border areas, as with malaria, this disease is rarely seen. For more information on this disease, try this detailed page at the US CDC site - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/dengue/index.htm,or this more readable page at CNN Health...
