DO NOT feed the fish while visiting islands

by beebah

Some islands have plenty of tamed fish. Even at very shallow beaches. They are not afraid of human at all. And people just love to feed them with breadcrumbs. But there's one kind of fish that usually get the food from around the corals. By doing that they're "cleaning" corals at the same time and it makes it easier for corals to produce food to survive. So if those fish find it easier to get food from human. They will stop 'cleaning' the corals. But just wait to be fed. So they don't go to corals anymore, therefore, corals will die out. As well as other species around because this kind of fish are very friendly to human (coz they get food from you) But they're very aggressive to other fish because they don't want to share food with any other. Ended up they chase other fish away from their normal habitat. So spread this. No matter where you go diving, snorkeling. Please DO NOT feed the...

Friendly Thais?

by Justbak

Firstly the grand palace is never closed so dont listen to any 'helpful locals'. Also be very aware of what ppls intentions mayb when they offer u help on the street. We found that often taxi or tuk tuk drivers would send us in the opposite direction to where we wanted tot go if we refused their services. In Bangkok we had 3 men approach us asking what we were looking for (the bus stop) they ended up packing us into a tuk tuk that took us to a travel agent. All we wanted was a map. WE walked out 30 mins later having book the rest of our trip for what we realsied was an absurdly expensive amount and the hotels we were to stay in were in the middle of no where. The tours they booked us into were terribly sub standard. we had been told we were getting a 30% discount as it was a special sale day. Not at all true! We met others who had this done to them also. It happens SO fast. Be firm with...

Mosquito bites!

by johnaalex

Mozzies are most active during early morning (not a problem for me) and early evening. Protection is the best option, but nothing is 100% certain. It maybe that you are one of the lucky ones who do not get bitten, I am not so I ensure I have a good supply of cream and pills to counter the reaction to the bite. What makes a bite "yukky" is your allergic reaction to the saliva of the mosquito. All Thai chemists sell chlorphenamine pills (this is teh active ingredient in Piriton and other anti-histamines) for a few Baht for 50 pills. I find two pills after a bite stop any itching within 10-20 minutes. Tiger Balm is also effective in stopping the itching if applied on the bite.

Should I bargain when shopping in Thailand?

by net1

Fixed prices are usual in department stores, but at most other places, especially markets, bargaining is expected. Generally, you can obtain a final figure between one third to one half of original asking price. Lots of smiles, good humour and patience will get you not only better deal, but also a lot of fun.

Grand Palace is not open......

by globally79

There are always touts hanging around the Grand Palace and Wat Po telling you it's closed, it won't be open until 2 or 3 or so. Don't believe them under any circumstance. These guys are waiting to hustle you into a tuktuk and off to some other temple to be approached by touts pushing gems or some such other scams. This holds true all over Thailand, but I always ran into these guys near the Grand Palace.

Koh Samui--getting robbed on the bus/ferry

by vancitytraveller

Thailand is very safe..generally you will have no problem there..i would totally recommend Thailand for safety...ok there was only one problem when i travelled in Thailand..i travelled by bus from Bangkok to Koh Samaui..on the way from Bangkok to Koh Samuai Island i purchased a bus ticket from a bus station..i felt that bus was safe NO problem...dress warmly since the air conditioning is bone-chilling cold.i only bought a one way ticket there..good companynow going back to Bangkok i had a problem..i bought the bus ticket in Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui..the bus company was horrible...when i left koh samui by ferry to get to the mainland i got robbed!!! you see the bus company takes you luggage and puts it in the bus cabin..when the bus goes on the ferry the thieves searched threw all of the luggage..i lost my cologne and my friend lost around $14 US in Bhat because it was in her purse. Nightcrawler

by Mr.Sparkle

Thailand is famous for its nightlife and sex industry. Although its not as seedy as some other countries I’ve been too, it is certainly just as dangerous. STDs are rife in the country. If you want to keep your junk you better keep away.

Tip Photo
Walk swiftly and carry a big stick!!!!

by Mr.Sparkle

Beware of dogs in Thailand. Most of the time they are resting peacefully, but there is no telling if and when they might suddenly chase you. I was chased once by a pack of a dogs for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I carried a big stick after that.

Koh samui - car hire

by LINSY

We hired a jeep on the island for a very reasonable rate. It seemed to be in an OK condition - Big problem - we did not take it for a test drive and found out too late that the brakes did not work properly - as well as everything else. We drove around the isalnd but it was a hair raising experience, especially on the hilly parts. Take the car for a drive BEFORE you hire it!

Heads Up when snorkeling on Phi Phi

by ScottForster

The uncontrolled expansion of tourism in and around Phi Phi means that there are no limit to the numbers of people visiting. A day trip to The Beach was certainly not a highlight of the trip. Twice I saw snorkellers swim into motoring long tails. On one occasion I was on our chartered longtail and had to physically push the girl away from the boat and its unguarded propellers as we motoredaway from the island. If you chose to snorkel with the other 10 000 day trippers to the island, remember to look around you as often as you look down. Tip, charter a boat out for a sumnrise swim and snorkel and beat the crowds.
