We caught the midday flight from Chang Mai to Phuket, with the plan to taxi it out to the Ferry Wharf and on to Phi Phi. There isn't enough time to make the ferry from the Airport if your arriving around 1.15pm. Even our driver , with the speed of a F1 driver couldn't make the wharf on time. We were lucky enough to combine resources (money and nouse) with another family in the same predicament. We hired a power boat to take us to Phi Phi. Otherwise we would have lost a night's accommodation on Phi Phi and paid for a night in Phuket town. The ferry leaves at 2.30pm. Be there or miss it .
This has been said many times before but it is worth repeating-- don't strike up conversation with random Thai strangers on the street who approach you first! There are always exceptions, but as a general rule Thais are pretty shy and will consider it rude to approach a stranger in the crowd. People who do start talking to you are more than likely trying to make you take their taxi or tuk-tuk or get you suckered into a scam. The good news is that you can just answer "No thanks" to those yelling, "Hello, tuk-tuk!" or, "Where are you going?" The sneakier ones will start by asking you where you are from, maybe even tell you that they have a cousin who is going to a university in your town. Then they will inevitably offer you a deal that will sound too good to be true-- don't fall prey to that!In the middle of Bangkok, there has not been 5 minutes without someone asking us "Hello, where are...
Be very aware of the taxi drivers in Bangkok...most of them are ok but you will get the odd one that will not turn on their taxi meters. I was one of those people that got the wrong taxi driver!!...He wouldn't let me out of the taxi untill I paid an amount that could have taken me back to Oz...I paid ...an learnt a lesson...just be careful
Beware of some men approaching you claiming to be police agents and want to search your wallet. In Prutnam district, someone stopped me and showed me his ID. I could not see it clearly but there was something about Police written there. He looked foreigner, probably from East Europe but certainly not Thai. His English was fluent and perfect. His friend was on a motor bike not too far from him. He asked me for my ID and I showed him, then he searched my shopping bag. After that, he said he wanted to see my wallet. I had more than 5000 bhat in my wallet. I was hesitant but he threatend me. I held my wallet and he began sniffing the notes inside. I was fully prepared to hit him if he wanted to snatch my wallet. When he found that I was tough, he left the wallet and went to his friend saying that he was doing his job. If he really was a police agent, then why on earth, did he look foreign? I...
Thailand is trying to clean up their country and have introduced laws to fine people who litter. I actually saw people getting fined and if they didnt have the cash on them I saw one lady that had dropped a cigarette butt and was told pay a fine or pick up butts. Cant remember how many but she had to pick up loads and loads and they took her watch to make sure she complied.
DO NOT SEND YOUR PASSPORT TO THE BORDER WITH AN AGENCY!! If you need to say longer than your 30-day visa, do the visa-run yourself. I can be lucky to be back home. Got a fake stamp in my passport when I paid 2500THB to send my passport away to the border. Rather go yourself. It's worth the effort or spend some time in jail. The Thai government are ruthless when it comes to illegal visitors.
I was in Chiang Mai for Songkran (Thai New Year). The festival is celebrated in April and revolves around water to celebrate the end of the dry season. I respect the celebration of the Thai people, but the tourists ruin this celebration. If you are in Thailand while this festival is going on, you will get soaked with water unless you don't leave your hotel. I didn't mind the locals pouring water on me (note the use of the word pouring). However tourists are obnoxious and THROW water at you with no consideration for the holiday or you. Now you might think that it might be nice to get a little soaked during the hottest month in Thailand, but it's not. You never dry and you feel sticky and just gross. I saw a local parade where the locals threw jasmine scented water on the Buddha images which was really neat. Unfortunately, obnoxious tourists again ruined things by spraying the Buddha...
Although cute, monkeys in certain parts of Thailand have become a nuisance. They can be dangerous and obnoxious as they will try to steal anything shiny and not properly stored.Refrain from trying to feed them as this only encourages them.I experienced being rushed by a troop of monkeys and lost my $280.00 pair of glasses, rendering me blind. Luckily I had the good judgement of packing an extra old pair at the last minute before leaving on the trip.Although readily available, prescription glasses take time to make.Monkeys are capable of inflicting disfiguring wounds if you're bitten on the face and every year tourists suffer bites.Evidence of other people's misfortune litter the temples with broken cameras, glasses, hats, even jewelry.Be smart, do not approach monkeys. When entering an area frequented by monkeys, make sure and store any shiny or expensive item securely in a back pack or...

On top of the fact that they are the most annoying people in Thailand and drive mobile death traps. Its safe to say that nearly every travel book and internet site today warns about these people. During my time in Thailand I hear countless stories about people being taken to Gem shops etc or being charged anything up to 5 times the metered taxi fare. Not just in Bangkok but everywhere else I went to as well. My advice is simple......dont use them at all!!!!don't even acknowledge them!!!! hit them back where it hurts them most......in their pockets. Use the alternatives such as metered taxi, sky train, underground or best of all local bus.Personally I would rather flush my money down the toilet than put it in the pockets of these con-men.
