Exports

by EGitan

If you are going to do shopping in Thailand you need to check your the laws on importing certain items that can be a HUGE problem getting out of the Thailand and into your own country. For example, anything that is representative of the Buddha you need to get a license from the government stating that it is not an artifact and the purpose for its use. I am not talking about a $15 mask that you purchase on the street that can fit into a suitcase but something that you will need to ship such as a painting, statue, furniture etc.Another thing is shipping wood. It will need to be fumigated before it is shipped and must comply with your country's regulations for fumigation and wood accepted into the country. All of it is quite complicated. The lonely planet if you are American, is a good resource, but check your country's import/export laws. And check Thai laws on Exports. It can get expensive...

Stalkers

by appleseed81

I went on the Hat Yai trip with another girlfriend of mine... We were stalked one evening when we went out for dinner. The man followed us for a few streets and luckily, we managed to shake him off at a crowded night market. We spoke to one of the stall owners and she was very kind to let us sit at her stall till things were clear...I think I am glad I had some common sense with me that day to keep myself at a well populated location otherwise, I could be one of those legless beggars u see on the streets...Regardless of your gender, please be very careful when you are in Thailand. I am not saying that the security is lousy but please, things have happened before and don't endanger yourself unnecessarily

Insect Bites

by schmecksville

Make sure that you have enough Insect Repellent and Bite cream with you and try not to sit with you bare feet on the floor due to the ant bites that you can get. My feet were covered with about 75 ant bites and about 15 mosquito bites on my arms after a few days in Sing Buri.

Watchout for touts or...

by tan1415

other people that start a chat with you on the street. Whatever they want...it's always bad news for you and your wallet. Esspecially at night, but even in the afternoon you should be carefull. Also it's not just the locals that you should be carefull for, but also westerners.I am not saying that you should be paranoid or that Thailand is a extremely dangerous place. Just to be on your toes and be carefull. When you are on a holiday you are alsways more relaxed and less guarded than on a holiday. Esspecially when you are in a country that's so unfamiliar to you. These fellows try and take advantage of this. And thailand being such a popular tourist destination they have a lot of practice. They might just be offering you a service(girl, massage, tour, themselves) or trying to sell you something(shirt, drugs), but it could also be a start of a scam, pickpocket or a mugging. In the end these...

Not Everyone is a Scammer

by paul&leonnie

Be Careful! Don't let all the warnings about cons and scams leave you jaded because if you do you may just miss out on some very rewarding encounters with genuine Thai people. Yes, there are scammers out there (but I have met more in Singapore than in Thailand) but there are far more nice honest people who just want to meet you and help you enjoy their country. We met a gentleman in Chiang Mai who could have been reading from the Scams and Cons page of Lonely Planet but fortunately I listened politely to him and we ended up by having a most enjoyable experience - if you listen long enough you'll be able to tell whether someone is trying to scam you or not.

fake doctor

by blubee

a friend of mine was approached by a decent looking guy pretending to be a doctor. He talked about so many things under the sun then inform my friend about an expo that is so cheap and only opens every 2 years. He insisted she should go with him. My friend had some doubts and decided not to entertain him anymore. After a few days, my friend saw that same guy again using the same story to another person. My advice, always be on your toes, better be a snob than be fooled. These people are like crocodiles !

Over night bus thefts

by K1W1

The overnighter is a great way to get around and to save on accomodation costs but beware in Thailand as it may turn out to be more expensive than the bus ticket !!On several bus trips recently, friends and I have been on the big, new and comfortable buses for an overnight trip and each time we have had our backpacks, (which were locked!), returned to us and the insides had been totally gone through. The new buses have a huge luggage compartment and someone has been staying in there with the bags. They have several hours to 'go through' the packs while everyone is asleep. The tool they use does not damage the locks from what we can see, but no real effort is made to hide the fact that someone was in there. These buses are private company's and are booked through agencies in the Khao San Road area of Bangkok. They are slightly cheaper than the buses leaving from the main bus stations but...

jet ski,s be very carefull

by lesdavis

was in phuket march ,patong beach, twice in 1 week we saw people being ripped off by the boys hireing jetskis, you hire a jet ski and when you return it they find some damage on it caused by you which will cost you from £50 up to 1 guy paying £300 he was surround by about 7 beach boys and badly hassled to pay up(which he did,)the best thing to do is before using the ski check it carefully pointing out any damage.and if possible take a couple of pics with your digital, you can always erase them after.......

Don't trust anyone!

by Roobaroo

Everyone in Thailand is out to rob you. I got really bad advice from some co-workers, like to book my tour through TAT. In reality, there is no such thing as TAT Tourism, it's a front. That set me on a bad roller coaster of scams. I got approached by jewelry sellers, fake jungle tour guides, and many others who wanted my money. And on the last day my credit card got stolen, too, in my sleep. They'll think of a million reasons why you should give them your passport, too. Don't!
