Muy Picante!!!!

When ordering outside of your hotel be aware that food varies throughout Thailand in degree of "Heat".Ayutthaya was rather more spicy than in say, Bangkok or Phuket.Be aware and you may want to let your server know ahead of time to make it less "Spicey"

Buddha Statues in Thailand

by carmilla5

Before you leave Thailand if you've picked up any buddha statues please check if these need a guarantee/licence as I have been caught and nearly arrested believe it or not because a statue (made of metal) was seen by Customs as I left Phuket as taken from a Wat (temple) whereas I had naively bought it from Patong Beach.I had it confiscated with the Customs Officer telling me that I needed to get it checked first. My cynic tells me also there's a bit of a racket going on here and I feel a bit duped by all this. There's not enough information telling tourists about this and exactly what constitutes a buddha statue that needs to be licenced. He told me 80% of tourists get 'caught'. Why not advise people more carefully?Anyway check everything.Oh yes I guess part of the problem was that my buddha statue was wrapped in a sock for protection and stupid me didn't even consider how wrong that was...

Hotel safes!

by TracyG

Be careful about leaving your valubles in the hotel safe - particularly in remoter areas. Whilst I was in Chaing Mai I read and heard from people that had had their things tampered with, or copies of their credit/debit cards taken!

Bad street food

by Jschukal

This a is a real picture of a sidewalk food vendor. I swear to god. They had roasted cockroaches and all kinds fo other bugs. This was right outside our hotel. I never saw anyone make a purchase but I assume they do. Yuck.

Con Men and Gem Scams

by troodee

This is a very serious problem that has not been dealt with adequately by the Thai Authorities. Conmen approach tourists outside famous tourist spots like the Grand Palace, and Wat Pho telling trusting tourists that the attraction if closed for the day due to: King's Birthday, Buddhist Holiday, Prayers etc... take your pick. Do not believe or follow these men, even if there seems to be a corroborating statement from another bystander, normally the accomplice. Some taxi/tuk tuk drivers will approach outside your hotel to offer their services for an extremely low day rate to ferry you around town in order to bring you to places you did not plan want to go to.Their motive is to lure tourists to obscure temples where so-called accomplished priests will recommend you to buy a lucky stone for good luck/fortune/health etc from unregistered stores or "one day only" sales at so-called export...

Food

by Paul_the_Seeker

Be careful when eating from vendors or other "Thai-style fast-food" places. The grilled chicken may look good, but food poisoning is quite frequent for the uninitiated because the chicken is not kept refrigerated and the same knife used to cut the raw chicken may be used to cut the cooked chicken. Raw vegetables are a bit risky too. I definitely recommend trying as much as you can, just be a bit careful. Food hot out of the wok or noodle soup is a safer bet. Check the Center for Disease Control's site for more info.

"VIP" minivans in Thailand

by Figur

Travelling from one place to another is very easy in central and southern Thailand. Minivans and buses gets you everywhere. But sometimes, when you book your journeys through hotels or travel agents, you might want to consider paying a buck more to get to your destination alive. We got ourselves tickets from Ko Lanta to Ko Pha Gnan at 450 bath, wich is very cheap. But the so-called VIP minivan that came to take us to Krabi was a trip from hell - the scariest thing I`ve ever done. I was certain I would meet my maker due to this madmans suicidial motoring skills, like passing trucks on roadtops, going full-speed through traffic jams and driving like the devil himself was after him. Being on schedual is by all means fine to me, but I do prefer to arrive alive. The bus trip from Krabi to Surat Thani was nice and comfortable, so was the ferry out to the islands. But that rude, mental...

Monkeys - sometimes quite dangerous!

by gabyne

Be aware of the monkeys. Most of them are fed by humans so they aren't afraid and can be quite nasty. Once I was attacked by one who chased me for food... The monkeys are macaques mainly - and they have shark claws and teeth!

Tip Photo
Tuk Tuk scam

by diamond_dog

Tuk Tuks are everywhere in Bangkok they are 3 wheeled motorised rick-shaws. If you are in bangkok and a Tuk Tuk driver offers you a tour of Bangokok for 20 Bt dont go with him. You will be taken around to a few temples that you have no interest in and then he will ask you to go into a gem shop and tailors. There is no pressure to buy anything but you will be put in embarassing situations and will end up wasting half a day. Make sure there is no stops involved before you get into a Tuk Tuk.
