Flying to Ashgabat
You can travel to Ashgabat via either:
- Turkish Airlines from Istanbul
- Lufthansa, departure from Germany with a small stop in Baku, Azerbidjan.
You can also travel via Turkmen Airlines, but it is not highly recommended since they are not member of IATA.

No Taxi in Ashgabat !
There are no official Taxis in Ashgabat. Every car can be considered as a Taxi. Just wave your hand and a car would stop. When you use a car waiting outside the hotel, the driver will ask you for something around 50,000 Manats (~ 2 USD), which is considered expensive. 20,000 Manats (less than 1 USD) will be more than enough for a ride.

to Ashgabat from Dashoguz
Minibuses leave Dashoguz, (60km from Khiva in Uzbekistan) when full from the Vokzal (bus station). The ten hour journey (570km) through the desert costs 130,000 Manat (24,000M/$ black market; 5300m/$ gov't rate). I paid $6 in US funds.
Bring plenty of water and some food along for the ride as there are not many places to stop. The road is great in some places but most of it is quite rough. It does not seem to be possible to break the journey.
- Budget Travel
The taxis can be scary but are very cheap. Petrol costs about $1 for 60 liters.
Most trips around town will cost less than $0.50. From the city to the airport (which isn't too far from the city centre) cost me 15,000 Manat (about $0.60 changed at black market rates).
