Currency exchange

by no_second_chance

Mike described it very accurate. it is just right by the block crossing from the park. I thought there was also another hotel called parkview around that too or it is a new name of Evergreen. not sure. but yes, Mike was right too about the cost to get there from the airport. last December I payed around $4.5 to get to my hotel which was only 1 block away from that Evergreen hotel. so I assume you would pay 5-6 dollars for your trip. Also I remember they require a fee about $1 (or 20,000VND) as airport entrance fee if you get to the city from the International airport (and half of that fee if you get into the international airport).one more thing I think I should share. when you arrive at the airport, you should exchange maybe $50 for taxi and other spends because the black market foreign currency exchange rate is a whole lot better than the bank rate and the airport uses the bank rate....

Vietnam In Two Weeks

by JJfromNJ

Two weeks would probably be a little rushed to do the whole length of Vietnam, especially if you want to do Halong Bay or Sapa. Halong Bay was amazing and, although I didn't go to Sapa, everyone I met who did raved about how great it was. I really regret not checking it out. If you go with this idea, you should plan on 3 days for Halong Bay, 3 days for Sapa, 4 days in Hanoi, and then fly to HCMC for the last 4 days.If you don't want to skip central Vietnam, I would suggest spending 3 nights in Hanoi, then use 2 nights for either Halong Bay or Sapa (don't know if you'll have time for both), and 3 nights in HCMC.That gives you 5 more nights to work with, which is going to come down to your preferences. I didn't go to Dalat so I can't comment on that. Nha Trang is nice though. I would say to plan a couple nights in either of these places. Now you have 3 more nights, which would be divided...

Hue vs. Hoi An

by JJfromNJ

Food and bia hoi Hue serves as a good base to get to the DMZ but other than that, there's really nothing much there. IMO, even if you're not getting clothes made in Hoi An, it's still a better town to explore, better shops, better nightlife, and you can also easily get to the beach from there.

Beaches

by Stepwalk

Cua Dai Beach at Hoi An is less crowded, quite clean especially compared to Mui Ne, and doesn't suffer from the bar-flies (people) that are making Nha Trang a hassle these days. The local accommodation such as Hoi An Beach Resort and River Beach Resort are inexpensive and very good quality and you are a 10 minute taxi ride into Hoi An. You can also do a day trip to Cham Island where the beach is a genuine tropical paradise under palm trees with a Vietnamese barbecue lunch thrown in.However, having said all that Phu Quoc is really special but a bit rougher around the edges. See my Phu Quoc travel page for a quick summary.

traveling Vietnam in 3 weeks

by seagypsy

Hi Nathan,Hmm, you're going to pay a premium for those international or regional Southeast travel agencies that set-up your country tour for you like Diethelm, Exotissimo, or Indochina Travel.Vietnam is well setup for 'organized tours' from 'traveler's cafes' in each city or region and there are national agencies such as Sinh Cafe but the problem is that there are also a LOT of fake Sinh Cafe agencies too!For northern Vietnam, I like Handspan eventhough they charge more because they're quite professional, and have their own infrastructure of buses, boats, van, etc. to deliver on their services. Also their guides are well trained.Having said that, I don't think you need to have everything pre-arranged since it's pretty easy to hire local guides and cheaper, too.Oh, one concern is that even with 3 weeks, you'll be hard pressed to dedicate 10 days for hiking in the northwest territories and...

Vietnam in 3 Weeks

by frankie_tubiera

YOu are lucky to enjoy the luxury of time! Itinerary would depend much on your interest and what activities interest you most. Three weeks is really more than enough to see all the five UNESCO world heritage sites and other attractions in Vietnam. Anyhow, I suggest you start from Hanoi, then spend a night or two at Halong Bay (UNESCO World heritage site #1). You may book a tour package with Fantasea Tours (please visit their website for more info www.fantasea-adventures.com. Then when you return to Hanoi you can check in at Democracy HOtel or Bodega Hotel at the Hoan Kiem District to spend a day or two touring the City. You can do the Walking City Tour on your own. After this, you may opt to take the night train to SAPA where you can spend a couple of nights in the cool mountains. Back to Hanoi, you can travel by train to Hue, the ancient imperial city (UNESCO world heritage site #2)to...

Cheap adventure holiday

by lindyz

Overall we found Vietnam to be a developing country getting ready for the onslaught of tourists. Some days we struggled to find just one person who spoke english, but that made our adventure all the more fun!Vietnam was also, for us in 2006, a very cheap holiday. We paid about $2000AUD for 2 weeks in Vietnam. That included all our flights, accommodation, transfers, breakfasts and travel insurance. During the 2 weeks, I spent another $1,600AUD approx, so all in all, I consider that to be a cheap 2 week overseas adventure - AND VIETNAM WAS CERTAINLY AN ADVENTURE!!!! Cyclo ride through the streets of the "Old Quarter" as a "human target"!Losing our money, passports and safe key in our Hanoi room!Jumping on rooves of junks to get off at the wharf at Halong Bay!Chu Chi tunnels visit.Almost not making it on the plane to go home - damn those illegal substances!!!

Go up North

by deniseesser

I loved visiting the North of Vietnam, specifically Sapa. It was very charming and I could easily take a train there from Hanoi. It was cozy and quaint and the scenery was breathtaking. We rented scooters for relatively cheap prices and went up north and saw the Hill tribes. I highly recommend Sapa as a destination in Vietnam. The heat!

US $'s to Dong

by balhannah

In Vietnam they use Dong more than "US" I found Hotels accept both. As I usually only had Dong, they got out the calculator and converted it infront of me. In the street its different, they give you change in Dong when you give a 'US' note, and a lot of the time, you are ripped off, I was once, at Sapa, but not again. I typed out a little note with how much Dong to "US" was worth and quickly had a look at this, after a few times, you knew it off by heart. When they tried several times later in my holiday, I corrected them, and was given the correct change.
