Tour operator recommendation

by flyfreak

I can warmly recommend the touroperator ANNTOURS if you want to give yourself a good treat. You will be in best hands. It is for sure a bit more expensive than the average travel offers, but very individual and professional. Anntours is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest travel agency in Vietnam. To find out more about the special personal history of the family read their homepage www.anntours.com For my arrival I had booked the airport pickup and transfer to the Lavender Hotel through Anntours, also the 2-day Mekongdelta tour. I wanted to make sure that I would have a smooth arrival and good start of my travels. These expectations were met and exceeded. My driver and the guide were highly professional, knowledgeable and friendly. My Mekong Tour was a highlight thanks to them. Also, travelling as a single woman, I felt safe and respected. I had booked the following tour:(SGVL2) 2...

Visa on Arrival

by om_212

Getting visa on arrival, though not a favorite thing, definitely deserves mentioning. I was extremely happy to learn that such opportunity existed, and though hesitated at first, I decided to give it a try (especially after couple unsuccessful calls to a Vietnamese Embassy in Kyiv, who totally ignored me and couldn’t explain what documents exactly I had to submit to get a visa). someone on the Vietnam Forum recommended to go through the Vietnam Sunrise Travel and I in my turn would like to recommend it as a reputable (no-scam) option to get your visa hassle-free.the whole procedure was simple and very expedient. I sent them an e-mail with all the info, and in a day, after paying them $18, I have received my invitation letter. at the airport at Hanoi, I approached a visa-on-arrival booth, handled them the invitation letter, and received my visa after filling the form and paying $25 was...

US or AU $'s

by Chrissy50

Absolutely no problems with Au Dollars in Vietnam. If you organise for you hotel to pick you up from the airport you will be fine to change Au dollars after checking in and unpacking. I would not suggest you use US Dollars when shopping etc, you will get a better deal using Dong. Waking up in our Beach front Cottage while staying in the Little Mui Ne Cottages we were greeted with Cow's walking along the beach, no noise just the beautiful balmy morning a few dozen cows and their owner, cows on the beach was the last thing I expected, my 6 year old grandaughter was delighted.

Side trips from HCMC

by klmousseau

I went to HCMC in March last year. We booked a trip through Sinh Cafe on 248 De Tham St., Dist. 1. there are other tour offices there too, offering a variety of day tours from HCMC. We went on a day tour to the Mekong Delta, it was fun and I think the kids may have fun with it. A beach resort near HCMC is:http://www.asiarooms.com/travel-guide/vietnam/ho-chi-minh-city/ho-chi-minh-city-popular-destinations/beaches-of-vung-tau-ho-chi-minh-city.htmlI didn't go there, but I hear it's nice. Happy Travels!

Vietnam on Film

by iwys

My fascination with Vietnam was fuelled by films set there, especially war films:"The Deer Hunter" (1978)The first truly great film about the Vietnam War. Winner of 8 Oscars. It shows the effects of the war on a group of friends from a steel town. Great acting from Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken. Who could forget his Russian roulette scenes?"Apocalypse Now" (1979) Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Nominated for 17 Oscars. Influenced by Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", it's memorable for Marlon Brando's portrayal of mad Colonel Kurtz and the famous scene where the choppers sweep down to the sound of the Dance of the Valkyries."Platoon" (1986) Directed by Oliver Stone and winner of 4 Oscars, it gives a US soldier's view of the war. It was a ground-breaking movie in its dark realism. Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe are superb in it"Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987)Directed by...

Taking US$ and paying for Hotels etc

by Stekmer

I spent 3 weeks in Vietnam in October 2008 and sought advise about what money to take and how to pay for Hotels etc. What I found was the following.....We took US$ and had an ATM card as a backup (I don't like the fees charged by banks so never use an ATM card unless absolutely necessary). Changing US$ at money changers or banks was easy and larger denominations (US$50 or US$100) do attract a better rate.Hotels that I had booked with in US$ preferred payment in US$, or were asking a higher rate in Vietnamese Dong (VD) if paying with Dong. They willingly accepted much smaller notes (even US$1 notes) as payment for the hotel or transport. They did not give change in US$, only in VD at a lower rate than offered by banks or money changers. If I went again I would probably do the same as last time - ie. take larger notes for changing into Dong but also a selection of some smaller US$ notes for...

Money and ATMs

by King_Golo

Vietnamese currency is called "Dong" (abbreviated VND). 1$ equals 17.000 VND, 1 Euro 24.000 VND. VND come mostly in banknotes, but a few years ago, coins were introduced as well. You'll seldom come across them, but you should know that they exist. The following banknote denominations are available: 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000 and 500000. While a 200 VND note is basically not worth anything (and thus often given into donation boxes at the cashier's desk), 500000 VND equal roughly 35 Dollars or 25 Euro. The small denominations are made from paper and everything starting from 20000 VND is made from plastic. Older notes made from paper still exist, but are not valid anymore. Make sure to get the correct money. It is useful to always have small money (<20000 VND) handy, as many street vendors and even shopkeepers cannot change bigger notes. Your best chances to...

Is there a malaria-risk in Vietnam ?

by WStat

according to the German Society for Tropical Medicine rural Vietnam is a high risk-area for malaria; only the city-centers of Hanoi, HCMC, the Red River Delta and the beach north of Nha Trang are said to have no or a much lower risk.(see http://tinyurl.com/5o2jo8 )There is also no malaria risk in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Qui Nhon, and Haiphong. For visitors of the "Low Risk-Areas" the Society recommends continuous prevention of beeing bitten by the use of insect-repellents, (DEET or Icaridine) and a "Stand By-Medication" with Malorone.("Stand - By" meaning just taking the pills with you and using them only in case of severe fever, according to the leaflet's recommendations.)If you plan to leave the areas of low-risk, you should use a continuous prophylaxis, i.e. take anti-malaria-pills (see details at http://tinyurl.com/5tm7vk ) Malaria: a serious subject :Although risk spots are in rural...

Visa to Vietnam!

by lightsmileandi

Dear friend from Australia,Welcome to our small but beautiful country!Vietnam is now very open to travelers so applying for an entry visa is not as difficult as it was in the past.If you are living near the Embassy or Consulate of Vietnam in Australia, you can get your visa there. There will be worry or concerns as you will have your visa stamped before you leave for Vietnam. This way costs you some more money in compare with the visa service offered by travel companies in Vietnam. As you are in Australia now so if you would like to get a visa for entering Vietnam, you need to provide your information for a travel company in Vietnam. It includes your full name, date of birth, passport #,..... Then the company will help you to get a visa approval letter with a "red" stamp of the Immigration Department of Vietnam. When you have this letter, there should be no problem in getting your visa...
