Vietnamese block building

by picek

Vietnamese architecture has rich history and many influences - old buildings - houses, palaces, tombs, gardens and temples are influenced by Chinese, the colonial era brought French style, then there's social-realism of huge and massive buidlings in the North, again there's native approach in mountainous areas where ethnic minorities live. By the seaside you'll find many houses on stilts in Kampuche Krom or Mekong Delta. Nowsadays there're many buildings in glass and steel style - like those in the west - and they're conquering the city landscape. However, Vietnamese had also build many buildings in their own way - tall and thin blocks which seem to have one or two rooms in each floor. These are newer buildings. Main facade is usually painted and has large window or balcony - but that's just facade facing the main street. If you look behind the building there's something different - most...

Experience life inside locals' homes

by DSwede

Vietnamese people are very kind and inviting. The problem that many westerners have is that there is either a language barrier, or they do not take this hospitality as genuine.Granted, everyone should have their eyes open for a scam or theft (Vietnamese are opportunistic and known for petty theft), but one should graciously accept an offer to experience more of their local lifestyle. It may take some time and practice, but try to make friends with some locals. They are a great source of information of both the area and the culture, have great points of view for conversations, can help you understand everything from what the proper prices at the market should be to the recipes of your favorite Vietnamese foods.I was fortunate enough to make friends with some locals in Da Nang and a small group met in their home for some traditional foods and conversation. It was great to see how the inside...

Betel and betel nut in Vietnamese culture

by Nhiki

As a tradition, Vietnamese people used to invite their guests to chew betel before starting a conversation. That is why everyone here knows this saying:"A piece of betel starts the ball rolling." A quid of betel accompanied with greetings has been a popular custom from very early on in Vietnam. It made people closer and more openhearted. At special ceremonies, especially Lunar New Year and wedding, a dish of betel and betel nut is always available so that people can share and celebrate. Sharing a quid of betel with an old friend is equivalent to expressing gratitude for the relationship.Another way in which this tradition showcases the importance of betel leaf and areca nut in VN culture is how it is used in ancestral worship. They are always present at the altar.A quid of betel consists of three main materials:betel nut (sweet taste), betel leaf (hot taste) & lime (pungent taste)....

Freedom in Vietnam

by tampa_shawn

Freedom House publishes some great facts on "freedom" and Vietnam is on the list of "Worst of the Worst: The World's Most Repressive Societies 2005" Along with: Belarus, Burma, Chechnya (Russia), China, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Libya, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tibet, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Western Sahara (morocco) and Zimbabwe Vietnam did NOT make the list in 2006!!! Hurray for Vietnam!!! But Vietnam is still far from free. If you pay attention you will notice it i.e. Hotels and drivers are required to register your passport w/the govt so they know where you are every second - I was told it was 'for my protection" Excerpts from the Freedom House Report The Vietnamese government continued to deny its citizens basic freedoms..adopt[ed} a new law on religion that will further reinforce state control of religion and churches. Two trials—of...

Keep your cool

by darrenbegley

When dealing with a delay or problem in Vietnam. Always keep your cool, smile and keep your voice down. If there is a mistake try to keep it to how can we fix this. This allows the other person to keep 'face'. Yelling, blaming, even a slightly load voice shows you can't control yourself. My wife and I were boarding Vietnam Air. The couple ahead of us were slightly over weight on their baggage. Rather than being polite they immediately started to blame the agent at the desk. After about 15 mins of this they were charged full fare on the extra weight. We were next in line. Sad to say our bags were over the limit too. I smiled and asked how we could get this fixed. Could I move stuff around in my bag and keep my voice down. Agent was pleasant and comped the weight fee. Smiles go a long way.

Ceremony in the Buddhist temple

by bagan

Enter always the buddhist temple particularly in occasion of a ceremony. Monks love to share their emotions and activities with other people. You can enjoy, speak with them, exchange addresses and objects, eat with them and be a part of their life. But remember to respect the place and their traditions.

The Vietnam War

by call_me_rhia

Vietnam is known by everyone especially for the Vietnam War, one of the bloodiest wars ever... and in the central and southern portions in particular, it is still possible to see many remnants of it. I was a small kid when it started, and possibly I did not even know all the countries that surrounded my own one, but I knew where Vietnam was and what was happening. Boat people were fleeing the country and a couple (Hong and Ha Nu - not sure of the spelling) was taken to my little village, where the whole community got together to collect money and give them a house and food. The Vietnam War is also known as the Second Indochina War, or else the American War. it lasted for 16 years, from 1959 to April 30, 1975 in Vietnam and it was fought between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the US-supported Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). Despite foreign aid and aircrafts,...

Ao dai 2

by iwys

Ao dai simple means long gown. It is actually a figure-hugging, knee-length top, slashed at the sides, worn over long pants made of the same lightweight material. It is, at the same time, graceful and sexy, for although it is long, the thin material hides lttle and the waist is revealed by just about any movement.

Ao dai

by iwys

The ao dai is the traditional costume worn by Vietnamese women. These silk, two piece costumes come in a variety of colours, but by far the most common is white.Beautiful young women in white ao dais adorn the covers of many guide books to Vietnam and every visitor who comes to Vietnam wants to take the perfect ao dai picture. Unfortunately, it's not always that easy. Nowadays, very few women wear ao dais. The only ones you are likely to see are worn by high school girls, Vietnam Airlines stewardesses and women working in tourist gift shops or as entertainers in tourist venues. So, most likely, you will end up, as I did, with some blurred shots of high school girls on bicycles, taken out of a bus window, or some rather formal, posed pictures of gift shop workers who are fed up with having their pictures taken by foreign tourists.
