Mekong Delta

by iwys

Actually, the Mekong Delta is not so much off the beaten path nowadays. There are regular 1, 2 and 3-day boat trips organised by Sinh Cafe and Kim Cafe amongst others. I took the 1-day trip to My Tho and Ben Tre, departing Sinh Cafe at 8.15am and returning at 6.30pm. It cost US$7, including lunch. There is another 1-day trip, to Cai Be and Hoa Kanh, departing at 7.45 am and returning at 6pm. It costs the same.

To Cat Tien

by Pierangelo

To reach Cat Tien is itself one adventure: you have to take first a Bus with TNK or Sinhcaf? agencies and stop at Km 125; on the street are waiting you some motobike lift: price is 500 Dong for 20 km, don't give one Dong more! Along the road pay the ticket for entrance in the park; then free ferryboat to the park center. You can reserve one room (16-18 US $) ph.84 61 669228, better if you reserve also the guide for the morning /afternoon /night tour in the jungle. There is also the option to sleep one night in the jungle for 10 US $.I was there in December and was raining all the time and we miss the boat trip in the wonderful crocodole lake because of weather. The guide says us that clima changed because usually December was dry season. Maybe you have less risk of rain if you go in January.

Cat Tien national park

by Pierangelo

Fauna of the Cat Tien NP includes at least 55 mammal species, more than 300 species of birds, 40 reptile species, 14 amphibians and 16 species of freshwater fish. The forest provides a refuge for a number of other threatened or unusual species including black gibbon, elephant , tiger , leopard , clouded leopard, Gaur, Banteng , Indian Muntjac and wild boar. This is the only location in mainland South-east Asia where southern Douc Langur is still recorded. There are also reports of kouprey being found in the reserve and Crocodile lake is a breeding area for a number of Siamese crocodile. Other reptiles include monitor lizard. Bird species include peafowl, Siamese fireback, endemic Germain's peacock-pheasant, endemic red-vented bulbul, Indian darter , milky stork and a wide variety of resident and migratory waterfowl. Groups of 10-20 lesser adjutant storks have been observed, and the...

Lonely Planet Walking Tour of the Old Quarters

by KhanhLy

The Old Quarters is known for their 36 streets, each named for the merchandise sold on that street. The guild streets were named for their products, service or location. We started out at Ngoc Son Temple, northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake. Headed north on Pho Hang Dau, we were soon surrounded by shoe shops selling every shape, size and style. The only thing that kept me from buying all those shoes was that I only had a single backpack to carry everything. We crossed over to Pho Cau Go (meaning Wooden Bridge) to Pho Hang Be (bamboo rafts), continue north to the 'T' intersection with Pho Hang Bac (silversmiths). Near here are several shops, where artisians carve intricate gravestones by hand, bearing an image of the deceased. A short detour north on Pho Ma (sold sacred joss/votive papers) lead you to the Memorial House at number 87. We toured this Chinese merchant's home, recently restored and...

MYSON

by manil51

My Son, located in Quang Nam province, 69km south-west of Danang, was an imperial city during the Champa dynasty, between the 4th and the 12th centuries. The sanctuary is a large complex of religious relics comprised of more than 70 architectural works. They include temples and towers connected to one other through complicated red brick designs. The main component of the design is the tower, built to reflect the divinity of the king. The Cham architecture in My Son is one of the main attractions in Quang Nam province.According to records on the stone stele, the prime foundation of the ancient My Son architectural complex was a wooden temple to worship the Siva Bhadresvera genie. In the late 16th century, a big fire destroyed the temple. Step by step, historical mysteries were unveiled by scientists. Through stone stele and royal dynasties, they proved My Son to be the most important...

BAO DAI'S SUMMER PALACE,Around Dalat

by manil51

Emperor Bao Dai's Summer Palace provides the visitor with a very interesting look into the personal and official paraphernalia used by Vietnam's last emporer before his departure for exile in France there he spent nearly half of his life in exile after abdicating in 1945.Bao Dai , 1913–97, emperor of Vietnam (1926–45) and chief of state of Vietnam (1949–55). Born Prince Nguyen Vinh Thuy, he was the son of Emperor Khai Din and succeeded to the throne in 1926, but did not occupy it until 1932. Bao Dai cooperated with both the Vichy French and Japanese during World War II, but in 1945 the Viet Minh nationalists under Ho Chi Minh forced his resignation. The emperor returned in 1949 as head of the new state of Vietnam, which included Annam plus Tonkin and Cochin China. After Vietnam's partition (1954) he accepted Ngo Dinh Diem as prime minister. In 1955 Diem engineered a referendum that...

Lunch in Saigon

by pathfinder26

I hired a driver to show me Saigon. I told him I was hungry and wanted a few beers. He took me to his friends house. We sent five hours eating, drinking and playing with his friends kids. It was the best thing I did in Vietnam. After several Saigon Beers I taught them how to play quarters and they taught me several Vietnamese drinking games. The picture shows one where you leg wrestle with two "heated" bottle caps between your knees.
