Cham Ponagar Temple Complex ,Nha Trang

by manil51

The partially well-preserved temple complex of Cham Ponagar is the most important historical attraction of Nha Trang. The complex is situated on a hill outside Nha Trang. Originally the complex included 8 towers, 4 of which still stand. They were constructed in different styles. Therefore it is assumed that they were built at different times between the 7th and the 12th century. The highest tower (23 metres) was built in 817 in honour of Princess Ponagar, who had taught weaving and new agricultural technologies to the people of the region. The other towers are dedicated to deities.

Sam Mountain,near Chau Doc,Mekong Delta

by manil51

Sam mountains are 5 kilometers from Chau Doc town ( An Giang Province ), the seat of the complex of historical places such as Tay An old pagoda, Ba Chua Xu shrine, Hang pagoda, Thoai Ngoc Hau imperial tomb and so on. The festival of Ba Chua Xu ( also called Via Ba ceremony ) is yearly held from the 23rd night of Lunar April to the 27th. The pilgrims to the festival can follow provincial highway from Long Xuyen to Chau Doc. Sam mountain is 7 kilometers away and tourists can take a waterway from Can Tho - Soc Trang or from Sai Gon.At the night of 23rd April is the bathing and costume changing ceremony for the statue. Bathing water is scented and her old clothes are divided into small pieces to distribute to the visitors and pilgrims. It is considered a charm for the holder to keep a good health and to drive away any evil spirits. After that is Tue Yet rite ( at midnight of 25th and early...

China Beach, near Danang

by manil51

Not far from Danang lies My Khe - better known as the famed China Beach. US and Australian servicemen were helicoptered in here for R&R during the Vietnam war.A great expanse of white sand stretches out before a rough ocean just 7kms from Danang's centre. Taking in China Beach from the heights of Marble Mountain is a must before heading down for a dip. The beach itself remains largely undeveloped - there's just a small kiosk and of course a few stalls selling t-shirts and other souvenirs.A swim at China Beach, or even just a walk through its clean, grainy sand is a must!

CHAU DOC

by manil51

Chau Doc (population 80,000) is an important trading and marketing center for the surrounding countryside. Until the mid-18th century this region was part of Cambodia. There is still a large Khmer population and the largest Cham settlement in the Delta. The Chau Doc district is also the seat of the 1 - 1.5 million followers of the Hoa Hao religion, founded in 1939 at the village of Hoa Hao. There are numerous interesting temples here, especially at Nui Sam and at Ba Chuc there is a temple and ossuary containing the remains of 2,500 Khmer Krom massacred by the Khmer Rouge in September 1978. Nui Sam (Sam Mountain)Three miles (5 km) southwest of Chau Doc is a rocky hill is literally honeycombed with sanctuaries, tombs, and temples. Most visitors come only to see Tay An Pagoda, Lady Chua Xu Temple, and the Tomb of Thoai Ngoc Hau, but walk right up to the top of the hill where you can get a...

Ba Na Hillstation

by Gage17

This one could easily fall under "Tourist Trap" due to all the heavy construction of accommodation in the area when I was there, but thankfully, it was not the high season.Ba Na Hillstation is a former French outpost high in the mountains outside of Danang. When visibility is good, one can see all the way out to the sea from here. There is little left of the colonial past, but some ruined structures remain that give hint of a former world.

Marble Mountains

by Gage17

South of Danang a short ways are the majestic Marble Mountains. Although they are rather small in their cluster, there is much to be seen here.... small temples, pagodas, trails and numerous caves dot the landscape which is lush with vegetation. If you look down at the dirt trails though, you will see actual chunks of marble, hence the name of the mountains.

The Historical Past

by Gage17

Although these sites are not necessarily "off the beaten path", sometimes they must be sought out. There is such a diversity of history to explore in Vietnam, namely the French architecture from its colonial days and remnants of the American War. Sadly for history buffs, much of this past has either been destoyed by war or left to decay, but to those who are particularly interested, there may be just enough to satisfy your sightseeing desires. For example, the Hotel Continental in Saigon is still up and running, and walking the grounds illicits memories of yesteryear. Being one of the main locations in Graham Greene's "The Quiet American", this was one of my more favorite sites.

My Son

by richiecdisc

My Son is a World Heritage Site and Vietnam's most important site of the kingdom of Champa. Indian-influenced much like Angkor in Cambodia and Bagan in Mynamar, this smaller Cham counterpart is nonetheless interesting and having been occupied for nine centuries from the end of the 4th to the 13th, ranks as much longer lasting than Angkor or Bagan. My Son is easily visited as a day trip from Hoi An and the cheapest, though a bit rushed, way is to take a tour bus for as little as $2. Alternatively, you can hire a car and driver for $20 if you want to have the place nearly to yourself.

Dragonboating during the festival

by we2364

Dragonboat, a traditional Chinese game represents the power, harmony, union and hardworking towards the champion. It is the one now hardly seen in many Chinese cities and towns, but i feel fortunated to watch this during the festival. When the game starts, all the men boats at the same time with the same direction. At the same time, the crowd sitting on the bank waves for cheering all the teams on.

A best mix between orient and west

by we2364

When we hear there would be a festival going on in the town, we(and almost everyone on the journey) want to skip this place by spending a short time there. It is true that the price of many guesthouses and hotels are all double than the past. There are just tons of vietnamese people swarming into the town to see the festival. But you also have many chances than ever before to deeply get immersed with Vietnamese culture, which there is only one time a year. In this pavilion, a scarlet just pierces into my eyes in the dark night with the music vibrating out from its inside. A western DJ plays a modern electronic drum and several locals play traditional music instruments, which creating an overwhelming mixture between western and oriental music. Nationality and music, always the word to speak with the world.
