    squid in ginger

There is something about being close to the sea that gets most people in the mood to eat things from the sea, and I am no exception. So, after a few days in Nha Trang, there was little I could do than follow my instints of going for some seafood.

I had a great squid in ginger for 30,000 dong (less than $2) that was fresh, cooked perfectly and massive in size. There was a bit too much ginger for my taste but it was still very tasty. We also had a fish soup that was even better. The whole meal with beverages was 89,000 dong ($5.50) and we were stuffed.

Bun Bo Hue is the city's namesake soup and must be tried if in Hue. It is available in most restaurants but for a truly authentic one, try and find a small local place that exclusively serves it. My favorite was on D Ly Thuong Kiet, heading away from the Perfume River. It was in a very untouristed area of the city and I was the only non-Vietnames in the place. A large filling bowl was 8000 dong (50 cents) It was dark at night but I felt entirely safe walking in the area.

Bun Bo Hue is Hue’s answer to the ubiquitous Pho Bo offered in other parts of Vietnam. It is a similar beef based broth with slices of beef present but it is generally spicier in nature and has a local type of sausage added.

With over a month of Asia dining under our belts, we both craved a little of our national heritage foods so D had her German and I was entitled to some Italian. No, I'm not actually Italian but my family is descended from there and it is what we eat on a daily basis. This cozy waterfront restaurant was quite authentic and obviously owned and run by some Italian imports.

Doreen had some very nice ravioli and I opted for a wood oven pizza that had this Jersey boy quite content too. It was a splurge for Vietnam but still under $10 for both of us to have a nice dinner.

tasty bun cha cua or crab
    paste noodle soup

Bun cha cua is a crab paste noodle soup and a true specialty of Hue. It was difficult to find in an authentic setting but with some close investigation I found it. I rarely use the method of asking at the front desk of a hotel in Southeast Asia for a place to eat as I assume they will merely send me to a relative’s restaurant. But I found myself coming up empty and with little time to waste, I did just that and was surprised when the friendly receptionist made some rough marks on a free map of the city she faithfully doled out. Though her directions took me to a dark and rarely visited by tourists end of town, I followed them and found myself in a simple sidewalk affair that is the hallmark of Vietnamese dining. The friendly proprietor treated us as family and quickly served out the delicious soup that has most likely been passed down for generations.

It was a spicy broth filled with noodles, with generous portions of what for lack of a better description were hunks of homemade sausage. They also brought out a rice cake of sorts that went well with the soup and was seemingly free of charge as if we were part of their family. It was 15,000 dong (less than a dollar) for what would easily feed three people.

Eating in Vietnam is a real adventure and the best advice I can give is to jump right in. The best places often just set up during certain hours. They stay in the same area and have regular patrons but are temporary just the same in the sense that they totally disappear when they are closed! The seating is casual and at very low plastic tables with accompanying low plastic chairs. Most westerners find themselves trying to squeeze into place and locals get a kick out of watching us try to do it. But take no offense, they appreciate the business and are very warm in their welcome too.

The best thing about eating at these places is you can see what you are getting. Just go up and point at what you want. It's that simple. Pho is the national dish of Vietnam and to have it in one of these places the quintessential experience. In this photo, D is ready to dig into Bun Thit Nuong, a great pork and rice vermicelli dish. Each city has their own specialties so keep an eye out for what catches your fancy. And give it a try!

D enjoys a taste of home

I am all for eating the local foods but with over a month of noodles in our stomachs, Doreen was in the mood for some of her German heritage food so we took the opportunity of such cuisine on coming to Nha Trang. An enterprising German has set up a small restaurant that serves up generous size portions of schnitzels and bockwurst. Doreen was particularly excited to find “brown bread” on the menu after only being able to procure baguettes previously on the trip. Though pricey for Vietnam, it was a fraction of what it would have cost in Germany and it was nice to have something familiar though sometimes not nearly as close to home as hoped for.

The schnitzel (20,000 dong or $1.25) was excellent and very much the flattened pork cutlet, breaded and fried as anticipated but the homemade bockwurst (40,000 dong or $2.50) was oddly and inappropriately spiced. Meals were ala cart so we opted for some potato salad (16,000 dong or $1) that was fantastic and great to have after over a month without a spud. The brown bread was only 5,000 dong or 30 cents but was dry and disappointing. Two draft Sai Gon Beers at 10,000 dong or 60 cents a pop rounded the meal up well. You can’t very well eat schnitzel without a beer, can you? Overall, we thought it was a good splurge meal though you could eat all day at local eateries at these prices.

This was a main stop on the backpacker trail and though an inexpensive enough place with some character, I would say that the real Vietnam rests some place else. As advertised in Lonely Planet, there was a silver haired painter/owner but he seemed more intent on flirting with pretty girls than imparting any authentic flair into the atmosphere. Still, a quiet place to enjoy a beer (admittedly a good selection) and decent if slow arriving food.

We had banh khoai which was a tasty pancake on the non-sweet variety that seemed more like a bean sprout omelet on the crunchy side. It was our first one and we had better and cheaper ones in small local restaurants later in our Hue stay. The nem lui, or grilled kebabs self-rolled in rice paper, was much nicer. Huda beer was a Hue local favorite that had a decent hoppy palate. It was 50,000 dong for food and one beer each but would need more to fill up for sure!

This restaurant is one of my best gastronomical experiences in Vietnam. Set up for tourists and "high level" people, it offers a huge "all U can eat" buffet for 6 USD in a charming patio.
It is an old temple refurbished as a restaurant and is nicely decorated, in the old Viet style.

Cao Lau is a regional speciality of the coastal city called HOI AN. You can only try the original here, and there are many restaurants offering it.
It consists in a dish of thick noodles in gravy, garnished with pork cracklings and served with thin pancakes.
I had mine in the restaurant "Yellow River" in Hoi An, near the Market.
