Cha Ca La Vong: Don't Miss the Cha Ca

by AutumnYellow

I prefer this unique, very local restaurant serving fried fish on hot pan with lots of vegetables, sauce and noodles to go with. Besides steamboat, I have almost never tried anything that require owns cooking right on your dining table. This restaurant is always pack with locals and tourists alike, and most likely you have to share tables. Be sure to get to this "supposedly original" 100-years old restaurant at Cha Ca Street, right in the heart of Hanoi Old City. Of course the signature dish (perhaps the only dish there), Cha Ca - a special dish made from fish, vege, peanuts, noodles and sauce - first made by the Duon family in Hanoi.

Bibi: Miss this restaurant

by christinenigam

Bibi The owner Bibi is quite a character, the food is not so good. The crumble was dry like a dried date. So we sent it back, there were no fruit in it. They overcharged us by 100,000 dong, which should not be in the bill as they had already recorded in the bill of 320,000dong for the set menu.So check your bill properly, thoroughly. The Bibi, food was disappointing. Had seen better days.

Any: Nothing is thrown away

by hydronetta

Nothing is thrown away from an animal.I was shocked to see that even chicken feet are on sale, nevertheless I still question how they're cooked and how they might taste like.Another delicacy is baked egg with the ebryo inside!!.

Any: Extreme delicacies

by hydronetta

For a westerner and special for pet lovers, this might be disgusting....Like their chinese neighbours, Vietnamese eat ...everything. From snakes to cats and dogs. Specially dog meat is considered a delicacy and the price per kilo is almost double that of beef!!Don't expect to have dog meat to be readily served to tourists. I never found it in any menu catalogue. But don't hurry up to misjudge that any pet is killed for culinary reasons. Vietnamese love pets and in many cases I saw a lot of them taken well care. As I was told these are animals are bred specially for this reason!!

Any: Drinks

by hydronetta

Beer rules in Vietnam. There is imported beer available (Heineken) in Vietnam, although a number of domestic beers are brewed: Larue, Saigon, Tiger, Halida (to mention some). Rice wine is very popular, and there are many brands available (I didn't taste it though). There is a variety of fruit wines such as apricot, orange or lemon, but also french ones can be found. Soft drinks (and not only cola) are processed from the many varieties of tropical fruits available (but you better opt for freshly squeezed juices). Bottled water is a must and easily found everywhere. The cost of drinks varies enormously, depending where you eat. For instance a beer starts for as little as less than 0.5euro to 1.5euro in upmarket restaurants.

Any: Vietnamese food

by hydronetta

Vietnamese food is plentiful, delicious and varies from region to region. Rice and noodles are served with nearly all meals. The most popular dishes are spring rolls filled with either meat or seafood and fresh vegetables, noodles with sliced pork, eggs, shredded chicken and shrimp. Seafood is plentiful and fresh: shellfish steamed with ginger, sea crabs fried with salt, lobster, fish and oysters. Among other common ingredients used are: duck, pork. Fruits and vegetables are fresh and tasteful.Food is served in numerous street foodstalls to lovely restaurants elegantly decorated.Prices are more than logical and for 10euros you can have a lovely lunch for two in a nice restaurant. But in case you feel homesick, western cuisine is widely available in restaurants.

Banh xeo Dinh Cong Trang: Best Banh Xeo...Bam!

by jeffmorg

Every time I go to to Saigon I visit a little alley known as Banh Xeo St. The tables and chairs are set up right in the alley. They also cook right there in the street, frying up Banh Xeo while you wait. Eating in the back alley may not be appealing but the Banh Xeo is delicious and atmosphere is festive. Banh Xeo is a vietnamese pancake. A crispy rice crepe cradles succulent bits of pork and crunchy bean sprouts. Tearing off portions and wrapping it in lettuce is followed by dipping it in Nuoc Mam (fishsauce) Washed down with ice cold Tiger Beer. I love eatin there...almost a tradion.

Pho 2000 - Saigon - HCMC: If its good enough for Bill its good enough 4 you

by cheerssweetie

This is good place to try your first bowl of Pho (Beef Noodle soup). They say this soup is the soul of the nation and also is known as the dish that feeds the nation. You can find this dish all over Vietnam from street vendors to fine dinning restaurants.I picked this restaurant as it is easy to locate. Its near the Ben Thanh Market, or approx 100m from the Rex Hotel (Everyone seems to know the Rex).It was also good enough for former US President Bill Clinton to stop and have a bowl.It was clean and service was brisk. It also provides a nice view of the street if you sit near the window and you can watch the passing traffice. The Pho here is good. If you have tried Pho in your home country you may find the bowls they serve it up in Vietnam on the small side. If it is not sufficent just order another one at roughly $1 a bowl its still cheap healthy eating.
