dogs

by xaver

The first day, when I arrived, on the way from the Hanoi airport, to Hanoi city, the driver tried to convince me to try dog meat, one of their specialites. He really could not understand why I did not want to try, and to tell the truth I do not know either, it's just for the idea of dog as a family member I grew up with. The driver explained to me that they do not kill and eat dogs on the street, they have dogs farms, where they grow up and feed dogs just as we are used to do with lambs.Infact they cannot understand how we can be so cruel to kill those small white sweet animals.I can understand perfectly his reasons and I sure do not criticise theyr food, it is just that I could not eat dog, I would probably have appreciated if someone gave me dog's meet without telling me though. Here I am copying a mail sent me by VTer JonnyVN, who lived in Vietnam and explain how dog meat is treated...

Street Vendors: The best food of the trip

by melanieinkorea

Foreigners are missing out by not eating the street food! It was some of the most delicious stuff I've ever tasted. The travelers' cafes are cheap and plentiful, but I was always disappointed when I chose one of those places over the roadside operations. Five months later and we're still talking about it and drooling!

Market stalls

by iwys

The meals served at market stalls in Vietnam are great value. You sit on a small stool and watch the stallholder prepare your bowl of noodles. It looks a bit unhygienic-they sometimes clean the chopsticks by dipping them in the boiling soup-but I never got sick once.

Tamarind Cafe: Zen Pasta

by dragon-girl

I'm a sucker for the fusion dishes at Tamarind Cafe. It's my home away from home in HaNoi, my substitute Starbucks (just kidding!). A good place to chill, plan your trip at ease and enjoy the delicious food and great music. The staff is also extremely friendly. A Hanoi-trip is never complete without a visit to Tamarind Cafe. One cannot eat Asian noodles every single day (but maybe a bowl of bun rieu will do just fine)... Zen Pasta + some smoothie with dragon fruit :-)

Observatory Restaurant: Breakfast in Sapa

by AndreSTGT

Don't miss their warm and crispy baguette with paté and coriander. And maybe some delicious home-made chips as a side dish?Other great, inexpensive places to eat include the 'Camellia' which specialises in game dishes, and the deck of the 'Auberge Hotel' which not only offers breathtaking views, but also delicious mushroom cakes.

Manderin Cafe: Mr.Cu A true Gentleman

by Firefighter1

Great food at a very fair price, but the attraction here is the decor and the owner. Walls are covered with photographs taken by the owner Mr.Cu. This gentleman is more than willing to sit and chat .Makes for a pleasant stop.

Cappuchino Cafe: Cappuchino Cafe - Saigon

by Firefighter1

Nothing special as far as decor, but the portions were generous and quite good. Owner is a nice woman who has family(sister and mother) living in the States (Phila. Pa.)Two of us would have soup,a main course and several Saigon or BCI beers and the bill would be less than 10$US Not sure of address, but its a few doors down from the Allez Boo Bar at 187 D Pham Ngu Lao They make a terrific Tom yum soup here.

Temple Club: To-Die-For Food in Saigon

by meccostaud

If you eat nowhere else in Saigon, you must go to this restaurant. From the moment you step off the street and walk down the dark interior hallway filled with statuary and candles, you know that you're in for a great restaurant experience. A walk up the stairs ends in a beautiful series of rooms warmly decorated in dark wood, with gorgeous lighting and ambience. The service and the food are incredible. Everything we ordered was fantastic, and the waitstaff was efficient, very helpful, and very friendly. There is a beautiful lounge area in the back where you can sit on a beautiful sofa or chair after your meals and enjoy the jazz music playing. A terrible storm struck as we finished our lunch the first time we ate there, and we whiled away a good hour sitting in that beautiful room sipping drinks.A jewel of a restaurant that should not be missed. The sweet and sour shrimp soup is without a...

Mango Rooms: Best Food in Hoi An

by meccostaud

Run, don't walk, to Mango Rooms in Hoi An.This is a small, brightly painted (think Caribbean fun) restaurant on a small quiet street. The very cordial owner has travelled the world and has created a fantastic restaurant. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how wonderful each dish was that we were served. This was the best meal we had in Hoi An, and one of the best meals I've had in a long time.
