Tam Tam Cafe: Skip this one

by meccostaud

We were disheartened to find that Mango Rooms was closed the night after our fantastic dinner, so we grudgingly crossed the street to this restaurant, which was also recommended by our hotel. We were led to a small table on the balcony overlooking the street, and were promptly forgotten. The service was very very slow, not very helpful, and they forgot my entree.I ordered a chocolate coconut milkshake, which sounded great, but what I received was basically watery chocolate milk. Ice cream is not good in Vietnam as a general rule.We were mummified by the time we received our bill, and were happy to go.Very disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Mandarine: Elegant Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

by meccostaud

This is a lovely wood-paneled restaurant tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in Ho Chi Minh City.We sat on the second floor and were serenaded by a man and woman playing the piano and flute below us on the landing. The service is impeccable, and it was not that expensive. For several dishes, the kitchen carved a large carrot into the shape of a bird as a decoration. Beautiful and impressive! Whole grilled fish in a delicious brown sauce.

Emperor: Great Hanoi Restaurant

by meccostaud

This restaurant was a brief cab ride from the Sofitel Metropole. We were seated in an upstairs dining room that was softly lit with a view of the street. The food and service were very good. The dishes were beautifully garnished. The fresh spring rolls were delicious, and they have a great selection on non-alcoholic shakes that were very refreshing.

Spices Garden at the Sofitel Metropole, Hanoi: Food as Art

by meccostaud

We had high expectations of our first dinner in Vietnam, and unfortunately they were not met at this classy restaurant. We both ordered the prix fixe menu that had been served to Jacques Chirac during a previous visit to Vietnam. There were about 6 courses in the menu. I've never seen a more beautiful or artistic presentation of food, but the flavors were disappointingly bland, and I was annoyed by having to slurp some of the food from the ceramic soup spoons in which they were served (so trendy!). I prefer my food to be more straightforward, and I would gladly sacrifice the art for better flavor. The service was top notch, as expected.I did have an unusual dessert, which was orange jelly with bee pollen ice cream. We had buffet brunch at the Spices Garden on the weekend, and it was far and away a better experience. Everything was delicious, especially the pho and the spring rolls. Order...

Siagon Bar - Caravelle Hotel HCMC: Mug of Prawns, Great Bread, nice view - HCMC

by Sydney_Haz

OK it's on the more expensive side of the food budget in Vietnam. But If your it's your last night in the country and you just need a snack and a cold drink with a view, then this is a nice place to stop off. Large Mug of steamed prawns, freshly baked bread, fantasic mayo and a nice cold beer. You could do worse for $15 US

Lac Thien - Hue: Don't Miss this in Hue

by Sydney_Haz

Very very friendly place. Great food and lun bia (cold beer). Sit back and read the comments on the walls and the ceilings (go upstairs on the balacony). The host is deaf but it's easy enough to point at the menu. Watch him open a bottle of beer up (an interesting tool).Beware that family members next door have taken the same name as this restaurant but look for street number 6 not 6A. Banh Khoai Pancake and Noodle dishes are excellent.

Miss Ly (Cafeteria 22) in Hoi An: Love the White Roses & Cao Lau - Hoi An

by Sydney_Haz

Very clean establishment with 3 great local dishes. White Roses, Cao Lau (use the soy & vinegar) & Fried Wonton with sweet'n sour sauce. With a Tiger, it will set you back about $6 US and you'll walk out stuffed!Tried a number of other places but Miss Ly's was the best in Hoi An.If your in Hoi An, just go straight to this place. White Roses - There sort of small dumplings with a filling of prawn & crab but it's the sauce which really brings it together.Cao Lau - A noodle dish with pork, pork crackling (hmmmm), noodles, beansprout and herbs with crispy fried garlic. Add a splash of soy and vinegar and mix it all together. They also provide a deep fried cracker which you break up into the dish. It's GOLD !Sydney_Haz

Cafe Tung (?? I don't remember): A lovely cafe in Dalat

by steevie_wanders

We arrived in Dalat on a particularly damp and cold afternoon, so were double happy to find this cosy cafe. Rather dimly lit, with comfy dark coloured furniture, it felt instantly welcoming. The small groups of local men smoking and drinking coffee were friendly but also kept a respectful distance (a blessing after the human crush of Ho Chi Minh City!). It was the kind of relaxing place you could easily visit on your own and while away an hour or two reading, people watching or just staring out the window. Delicious hot strawberry tea (or any of many other types of teas or coffee). Also brandy/whisky coffees for those really cold days!

Temple Restaurant: good food , lots of ex-pat eat here and locals als

by fil_d90

we ate some realy nice vietnamese bbq style food here, also good veggies like fried kangkong, we had bbq deer, pork, beef and squid, ate with some local viet friends and they picked this place for me on my last day in HCMC, there is a bar on the second floor and on the ground floor next to it is an ice cream place, i forgot the name of it

Can't remember but has the WWF logo all over it.: Best in Hoi An

by Dollers

A brilliant resturant no matter what time of day you come. The food was excellent, all the ingrediants were fresh and cooked to perfection. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. And as with all these kind of things in the more touristy type places, the food was actually cheaper than the other tourist restuarants. They also run group cookery courses to be booked in advance.
