various: shop till you drop!

by TomorrowsAngel

HCMC and Hanoi have the best choice when it comes to shopping but Hoi An in central Vietnam is also a shopper's paradise!Local stuff includes: lacquer-ware, mother-of-pearl inlay, and ceramics, brightly coloured embroidered items (hangings, tablecloths, pillowcases, pjs and robes), greeting cards with silk paintings on the front, woodblock prints, oil paintings, watercolours, blinds made of hanging bamboo beads, reed mats, carpets, jewellery and leatherwork. bargain in the markets, fixed prices in shops

Everywhere there: Shopping in Mong Cai

by skydivefred

Mong Cai is a town at the upper north east corner of Vietnam. A border town with China. All sorts of traffics take place there and , actually, my coach was checked by the police on my way back to Hanoi. There, you can find a lot of HI FI, video stuff that cost nothing. I bought a DVD player all zones, all formats player and I am very happy with it !!! As usual you have to bargain. Go to several shops and see who makes the best deal for you. Of course you will find a lot of fake brands like "PIOnner, sony" but it is obvious to notice. I chose to buy the chinese brand QISHENG, which is a well known brand for expats. good quality.

Buy Books from Street Vendors

by tampa_shawn

I NEVER thought I’d make this recommendation! If you’re like me you’ll want to LIMIT THE READING MATERIAL YOU BRING INTO VIETNAMThe reason I am saying this is twofold.1) I found very little time to read while I was in Vietnam. Even when I needed to unwind I found myself looking out my window or chilling in a café watching the action on the street rather than picking up a book. In fact, I didn’t read a single book my entire time in Vietnam (I cannot say this about any other country I have visited)2) Local children in the big cities sell a wide variety of books at inexpensive prices…so buy your books from them…they cost less than you’ll pay at home AND most of the children selling things on the street are doing it to supplement the families meager income so they can afford to go to school. Tourist areas in Saigon and Hanoi are filled with children carrying several feet of books in their...

Buy Art

by tampa_shawn

The art in Vietnam is both charming and inexpensive. I am not much of a “shopper” and I already have a home overflowing with pictures and paintings….AND I still left Vietnam with 7 oil paintings, 6 paintings on silk and a large hand embroidery pictureand I'm still dreaming of the ones I didn't buy... Everyone I talked to seemed to be telling a similar story.

Bargin

by tampa_shawn

Shopping in Vietnam means bargaining. Many Vietnamese vendors see Westerns as walking dollar signs and may ask 10 times the price....While I normally hate to the entire bargaining process I found it quite enjoyable in Vietnam. It was such a fun, lighthearted little game…if you want to skip the bargaining all together some stores (like grocery stores) actually list pricesWe checked with our hotel for normal price of cyclos, bread, fruit so we wouldn't get too ripped off. Although visiting Vietnam is relatively inexpensive for Westerns so the prices even drastically inflated are still affordable. Vietnam is known for its silk...silk liners for backpacking, silk purses, silk clothes… Getting custom clothing is also very affordable. If there is something specific you want you can bring a picture of it from the US or scroll through the various catalogues at the local tailors. Pants/dresses...

Many available: Ao Dai, My my!

by DeoPitt

We stopped at a good shop in Ho Chi Mihn City who's name I can't remember, but I'm looking for receipt to post it for you! Their service was very good. They took the time to show many options and delivered the finished product to our hotel with the tailor for a final fitting and adjustment. Not pushy, either, which is rare these days. If you're in Ho Chi Mihn city for 2/3 days, just be sure to shop on day one for time to have garment made, of course. My wife bought a custom made Ao Dai, which all visitors to Vietnam should get, especially the women. They are beautiful and quite appropriate for parties and occaisions at home. Traditionally, young girls wear pure white, fully lined outfits symbolizing their purity. As they grow older but are still unmarried they move into soft pastel shades. Only married wear gowns in strong, rich colors. The Ao-Dai is usually worn over white or black...

Fish markets

by SirRichard

You can find fish markets in most of the coastal towns in VietNam. The one I visited was in Hoi An, in the middle of the coast. If you come early you can see the auctions for the goods, and is a very interesting experience, even though you won't understand a single word!!Some of the fishes were really weird... I tried to ask the names of some, but couldn't understand the answers, so I just looked around and took some pics...

Hoi An Market

by SirRichard

Hoi An morning market was a nice surprise. I had no idea of it when arriving into town. But that morning I woke up early to take a few shots of empty streets in the sunrise light, and I suddenly came through the market, which is by the riverside. There were few (if any) tourists around, so I felt suddenly surrounded by locals selling and buying fish and vegetables, fishing boats leaving the daily captures...Nice! :-)

Markets

by SirRichard

All over Vietnam you can find many popular markets. I found them fascinating, I love markets and specially oriental ones, as the smells and colours are so different from western markets.I ignore what 99% of the stuff was, and that makes them even more fascinating, LOL
