Like many asian people the Vietnamse are superstitious of their first sale. many a good bargain can be had early in the morning when you are the first buyer of the day. Do your research and make your expensive purchase in the morning. In Hanoi get your clothes made. The tailors are far superior that thiose in Hoi An.
Ther are loads of Tailors in Hoi An so the best thing to do before buying is to find someone who has already bought some clothes from a shop and if it looks good go for it. The quality of clothing varies from shop to shop so word of mouth is always a good place to start. I bought a silk suit , two silk shirts and a tie for $25 in 1997.
If you don't care about money then the best city to shop is Saigon. They have artifacts from all over vietnam, but at very inflated prices.. sometimes at 900% the actual price. For a truly unique shopping experience visit hoi an, hue and sapa... These cities were the ones I found to have the not so "made for the tourist" type of suvineers.. Bargain, bargain bargain!!! I some times reduced the hotel price to half (though I'm sure it was inflated) The only place you shouldn't bargain is in restaurants. Oddly enough they don't bargain in jewelery stores either. That's the only real bargaining you can do here in Toronto.
Cheap and good pepper produced in the island. Then italian customs officers were very suspicious about my pepper confection (drug?).

interesting souvenirs like zippo lighters from the vietnam war (some replicas and some they claim are originals), snakes in bottles with some drinks, etc.. that depends on your bargaining skills.. :)
The laquerware is absolutely fantastic. Quality can be a little variable but trust your judgement. If you like it and the price is good buy it. Jewellery box approx $7
