The only tools to build the tunnels were such a small shovel and such a basket to carry away the material, that was dug out of the tunnels. Of course it was a big advantage that the soil around of Cuchi is only soft mud and they were able to easily throw all of the mud into the closeby Saigon-river, so it would disappear the easy way.
And then they also had thousands of helpers and as our local tourguide told us it was not only the idea to defend the country against an enemy, but these soldiers were also well-payed by Russia and China.
Like in the former times of the Vietnam-war there is a production of sandals in the Cuchi-museum and you will be able to see how they were produced. You will be able to buy them, maybe as a special souvenir. They had all sizes of sandals, unfortunately the larger ones were not on stock, but just shown on the display in the "jungle-shop" (see my 2nd picture)
The Vietcong were also perfect in recycling all kinds of remains of the war, bombs that did not explode, broken vehicles that were left back by their enemies etc. In these photographs you will see how the Vietcong soldiers were taking them apart and producing their own weapons with the new materials.
The Vietcong used a special kind of leaves to cover their houses in the jungle : in case of a fire or a fire-attack by their enemies these leaves would never start to burn all of the leaves and houses, but the flames would stop after burning just a very few of leaves.
Touch the leaves on any of the houses, they are quite strong and different to leaves that I had seen in other parts of the world.
