Street life: Main areas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Saigon' heart is located between the Le Loi Ave and the river. There you have the 2 main hotels (Rex & Continental), many restaurants and souvenir shops at Dong Khoi street (the one from Caravelle Hotel to the river).

If you follow Le Loi to the west, in 10 minutes you arrive to the Pham Ngu Lao area, full of backpackers Guesthouses, travel agencies and local restaurants.

    Street life: Massage and Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • I’ve had many debates with other tourists as to what and who are the persons on bikes making rattling sounds and what it is they are advertising. It turns out they are masseuses, in a way. They offer various types of massages and local remedies such as the suction cup cure shown on my ‘spiritual remedy’ tip.

Also commonly seen on the streets are young boys and less common, young girls beating a stick to a piece of metal causing quite a hypnotic tune. They are informing the public that they work for a noodle stall, usually family owned, somewhere in the vicinity. Prices are usually in the 3-5000d range. For those who wish patronize, the messenger will bring the bowl of pippin hot soup while you carry on with your daily activities.

Street life: Haircuts / Hoc Toc
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're in need of a haircut, or just a little pampering, check out the Armani Beauty Center at 40-42 Dong Du ST. in District 1. A haircut will cost you a lot more here than getting it done by a street barber, but you'll be happier with it in the end. Haircuts are especially pleasant in Vietnam because they're followed up by a head and shoulder massage. Armani Beauty Center also offers a variety of other services including manicures, waxing, and breast firming and stimulation..... huh? Hey, I'm just relaying information here! =)

Street life: Street Vendors Sell Good Food!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • As the sun begins to set in HCMC, the street vendors all begin to appear. Our mums always told us to never eat from the vendors but the ones in HCMC are really good.

Especially for dessert items. You want a nice banana and coconut waffle? Get it from the street stalls. Heaps cheaper and yummy to boot!

Need something to wash that down? How about a nice chilled coconut. Just $1. Ok, I give you two for a $1.

HCMC is a city that is alive. Not like some western cities that empty at night when the workers go home, this place comes to life with the setting sun.

If anybody is to ask me what my fondest memory in HCMC was, it's sitting on a roadside cafe and ordering a really big bowl of pho and a small cup of thick, vietnamese coffee.

    Street life: Noodles Auntie
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everyone in Vietnam is engaging in doing something at all time. This auntie is striving to live in over populated Saigon by selling noodles.

Some of us would have long retired & enjoying ourselves at our beach house or touring the world

if you are staying inside the city, be prepared for the sounds of the street to wake you up even before the sun rises. the sounds of the bikes start humming and you'll never be able to fall back asleep.

    Street life: Trees and Eyes
  • Tip Rating:
  • For the visitors who are curious, ever notice why the bases of all trees in Ho Chi Minh City are painted white? It is a safety precaution dating back to when street lights in Vietnam were limited, to ensure the driver does not have rude encounters with the barked decorations.

Same goes for the eyes painted on boats. Legend has it that when the first boats were completed, locals worried about the unknown that lurked in the seas and oceans therefore, large watchful eyes were painted on the bows of all ships to ward off any danger that came from the unfamiliar waters.

A street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon, District 1. A souvenir haven for people who want to get a little something for a loved one back home. The Street starts at the Notre Dame Cathedral and ends at the Saigon River bank with shops selling antique watches, conical hats, snake wine, traditional attire, musical instruments, etc. A great place to people watch while enjoying a coffee or beer in one of the many restaurants catering to the foreign taste bud.

Sitting outside a friend's shop while seeing hordes of different nationalities chatting, shopping, drinking and bargaining without a care in the world....

Please, if you are interested in antique watches (I guarantee he sells no fakes), make sure you drop in my friend's shop at 151 Dong Khoi. He speaks fluent English and is more than happy to assist anything you might want to know about Ho Chi Minh. His shop also holds traditonal instruments and a whole bunch of little wonders.

Street life: I saw a lot of french...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I saw a lot of french influence, some parts of the city reminded to me Paris or Nice!!
his is the french Cathedral, named Notre-Dame (it sounds to me!!) with masses in Viet, French and English.
Lot of devoted go there, and my hearth sounds when I enter, very heartbreaker.
Lot of asian from Japan, Taiwan or Coreo go there to get married and have a honeymoon in the coast of Vietnam
