People: Calling for the Restaurant Bill

The next time when you're calling for the restaurant check in VN, write on an invisible piece of paper on your palm . Of course, make eye contact with a waiter when you do so or people will just think you're plain out of your mind. This really beats having to say something in unintelligible Vietnamese and getting more than just a check... The same custom holds for Singapore. It doesn't seem to work for Korea and Japan though, I tried it and it cast serious doubts on my IQ level.

    People: Friendly Vietnamese Drivers
  • Tip Rating:
  • I know you're really rubbing your eyes when you see this. What, those speed demons are friendly? Well they are, to a certain extent. The next time you're in VN, observe the drivers carefully. They seem to be waving to another driver occasionally. You'd probably think that those drivers know one another but no, they don't . Those waves mean that a traffic police is cruising along and that the oncoming driver better slow down... A 'O' shaped wave means that the common enemy is on a motorbike, another wave conveys another meaning so on and so forth. Driving penalties are very severe in Vietnam and it could cost the driver's rice bowl, thus the strange stockmarket-like waves.

The first thing you'll notice on a busy Vietnam street are the mysterious masked riders on those zippy mopeds and scooters ( called an 'om' ) Upon a second look, you discover that these Zorro wannabes are actually ladies. Not only are they masked, they also wear long gloves, long sleeved shirts, hats, etc. in an attempt to block out all forms of UV light. Guess that makes them more Lestat than Zorro but fair skin is really prized over here. Never ever tell a lady over here that she has a lovely tan!

Though Vietnam seems like any thriving capitalist city in asia, it is still a communist country by heart. You'll see propaganda pictures and policemen everywhere, even in places like Apocalypse Now ( A Happening Night Spot Frequented by Tourists and Yuppies) Needless to say , talking about politics is a no-no but asking about Uncle Ho is fine. The old chappie is seen everywhere on posters and sculptures and he's usually posing with kids.

    Grace In The Night
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife in Saigon offer different things to different people. There are clubs for dancing, clubs for music listening, bars for drinking, and cafés for singing. Although the first three bring in more income, the last one is more popular with the locals. Vietnamese love to sing. There is an adage to encourage this love and practice: "Hát hay không bằng hay hát" (Sing well is not better than sing often). The adage must have been taken to heart because cafés for amateur vocalists grow like mushroom throughout the city. When you come to these cafés, there is music to enjoy and a stage to perform. No, these are not karaoke cafés, there is no TV with on screen lyric, but there is a live band to accompany your voice and thousands of music sheets at your disposal. One thing to remember, when the audience present you with a silk flower, the flower will include at least a VND 100,000 note, sometimes more. This is a symbol of appreciation for your beautiful voice, but the money is actually not yours to keep. What you should do is presenting the flower to the band as *your* appreciation for their accompaniment. This practice may sound strange to you but it is very logical to the locals. You see, the band does not receive any compensation for their work; they are playing their heart out every night for free. The owner cannot afford to pay them because the café does not bring in a whole lot of money, thus the customers who get the pleasure out of listening to the music or having a medium to showcase their talent are the ones who actually help paying the band with their tips. And the tips, you guess it, come in the form of the flowers presented to the amateur singers. So, you have fun listening to the music, then have fun belting out some tunes to an attentive audience who gracefully tell you they like your performance. Then you in turn gracefully tell the band how much fun you have in making beautiful music with them. Everyone has fun and everyone is graceful, and the night is pronounced a success.

    snake wine
  • Tip Rating:
  • don't be scared. These bottles of rice wine are everywhere. Imagine taking some sips of this alcohol that has been marinating with cobras, vipers, ginger, and other strange items. It's supposed to be a "cure-all" for disease. The label on my bottle says "cures rheumatism, limbago, and sweat of limbs" Umm sure it does! Cheers and happy drinking!

People: Why 3 million people in HCMC own scooters
  • Tip Rating:
  • According to a local chappie I talked to, there's about 6 to 7 million people in HCMC and half of the population here owns scooters or xe oms! He added that it was especially essential for a guy to own one because it would literally be impossible to date a gal without one! A favourite outing is usually a cruise around town on one of those oms ( appropriately termed "hug" ) and a stop at the city park ( next to New World Hotel ) .

Since I first arrived to HCMC, I felt curious of those chinese bakeries, with all those red boxes in the windows, and all those pastry things with strange names... So 1 day I decided to try. I bought one of those mysterious red boxes, and see what came out!! (see pic), a cutty little pig, with eyes and mouth!! I first thought of keeping it as a souvenir, but too difficult to carry, and I was hungry too... so I had to "sacrify" it... delicious, try it if U have the chance ;-)) Kind of sweet marzipan...

    Chinese Bakeries (II)
  • Tip Rating:
  • These are the shops I was talking about. So colourful and mysterious... and all the same all over Saigon. They seemed to sell the same kind of stuff, a kind of marzipan, sweet, with a hard surface... delicious!! You will find many in Cholon, the Chinese district, but also in many places around town.

    People: Etiquette in Walking
  • Tip Rating:
  • A very beautiful etiquette I've learnt in HCMC: When walking up a flight of stairs, gentlemen would let the ladies to walk ahead. If case they fall, our knights in shining armour will be there to hold them. Now, when coming down the stairs, the men will normally walk ahead. Same logic, if we ladies fall, at least the guys can be our cushion! So, next time, if you meet a guy from Vietnam, don't think he's being bossy when he insists on walking ahead of you when coming down a flight of stairs!
