    Visitors are definitely going...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visitors are definitely going to be totally stressed out by Vietnam's traffic. There seem to be so little pedestrian crossings, so U hafta do that stop-look-walk kerb drill thing. But the vehicles do not slow down for you!

The best tip was given by my tour guide. 'When u cross the road, either walk straight forward, or stop. Never EVER step backwards. The drivers all aim for your back.'

Yeah. Right. That means a blind man could cross the road right? Din have the guts to close my eyes and cross the road though :P

My first ever visit to Vietnam...
  • Tip Rating:
  • My first ever visit to Vietnam was back in 1998 to the city of Saigon. It was a real mind blower and I was lucky enough to have traveled with some family friends. Since that first trip I've been back several times and I never stop learning something new about the Vietnamese people and their culture.

    Many (but not all) Vietnamese...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some (but not all) Vietnamese people you meet in the tourist district are persistent in making offers to you whether it be transportation, bars, etc. Quite a lot of patience is required if you stay in those districts. Be open but be careful.

    People: Beggars!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be very discrete about giving anything to beggars frequently encountered in Ho Chi Minh City. If anyone is seen giving handouts to a beggar, he or she may end up being pursued by a mob of other beggars. This does not help create a good image for foreigners; it gives them instead the reputation of being easy to hit up for money.

    Visiting Pagodas!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Remove your shoes before entering Buddhist pagodas. Small donations placed in the boxes found in temples are appreciated. It is acceptable to keep your shoes on within Chinese pagodas.

Never let the soles of your feet face other people or any sacred monument, such as a statue of Buddha.

    People: Ask permission First!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Out of politeness, always ask permission before taking photos of people. The same rule of thumb also applies to photos taken in places of worship. Permission will almost always be granted.

    People: Greeting People!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the Vietnamese in urban areas no longer bow when they meet each other. In formal gatherings, at religious place, and sometimes in the country areas, one may see the people clasp their hands together in a prayer-like gesture and bow slightly. This is not practiced to any extent in everyday life in Vietnam as it is in neighboring Thailand.
