In the mind of most tourists especially the younger generation, nightlife is a word associated with loud music, hard drinking, fast dancing, and all night partying. Like in all big cities, Saigon has a fair share of this type of entertainment, but ask any Saigonite over 25 years of age and he/she would tell you the night is better spent at nightclubs where well-known singers performing their craft. In Vietnamese language, these clubs are called "phòng trà", literally translated as tearoom. Why tea, no one knows, but the theory as my father told me when I was a wee child being to appreciate good music, one should not imbibe in alcohol, a substance that blurs one's vision, muffles one's hearing and dulls one's sense. That sounded like a good logic even to my early skeptical trait, so I accepted it without further question. Not all phòng trà cater to all audiences. The twenty and thirty-something go to Nghê Thường or 2B Lê Duẩn, the middle-agers to M & Tôi or Long Phụng, and the older generation or fans of "nhạc tiền chiến" (music created during or immediately after WWII years) head to ATB or Tiếng Tơ Ðồng. There is an entrance fee attached to the bill when you visit phòng trà. There is no dance floor so if you prefer a place to showcase your fancy footwork, you will need to visit "vũ trường" (dance club) instead. Leave a Comment Theme: Live Music

 | | | | Hard Rock Cafe , Saigon: Not the real thing | Tip Rating: | | | | |
My Hubby's French Colleague wanted to go this place after the French Lonely Planet proclaimed that it was worth checking out. Even though it was not the real thing, sigh. Well, we went there by cab and I'm quite sure I could hear his french jaw drop with a dull thud when we reach there. The place was completely empty and this was TGIF! "Zees, iz the right plaze? " Oui, it was. The shop came complete with fake Hard Rock T-shirts. Well, since we were there, we decided to humour the disappointed French sod and sit with him for a round of drinks. Of course, we scooted off immediately after we finished. Particularly me, because I saw more than one amused cockroach scuttling around the premises and checking us out. C'est Abominable! We'll never rely on the French edition of Lonely Planet any more after this. To see more night haunts, click on b'packer's hcmc page

M & Tôi (the name is a play of word for "You and Me” with the "you" intent to be feminine) is the most famous "phòng trà" in Saigon. This is where the topnotch singers perform and where concerts are held regularly. There is an entrance fee of VND 100,000 (US$ 6) attached to the bill and at least one order of drink is expected. (Drinks run on the average of VND 50,000.) Don't expect too much on the quality or selection of drinks since they are not the forte of any phòng trà. The program starts at 9:00 PM and runs until midnight, but to get a good table, people begin to enter an hour earlier. Music in top phòng trà is always in Vietnamese language, so if you want to listen to the more familiar songs in English, nightclubs would probably be your suitable venue.
Dress code is not strictly observed, but you won't find a pair of sneakers, torn jeans, sweatshirt, or shorts in the house. The performers here always dress respectfully and so do the audience. Leave a Comment Theme: Live MusicAddress: 39 Lê Duẩn, District 1Phone: 823 39 48

 | | | | Apocalypse Now: Most Famous Bar in Saigon | Tip Rating: | | | | |
I went club hopping with my hubby and his insomniac French and American colleagues one night. Decided on this place as Lonely Planet ( the English and French version), the bible for all clueless travellers, said it was the hottest spot in town. We hit it all right, drank our magaritas there and danced silly on the techno-lighted dance floor. We were sane enought though, to leave the pool table and cafe alone. So was the Lonely Planet accurate? Ok, it was a hot spot but all the fun was somewhat watered down by the presence of 2 vigilant policemen in the club. What the hell were they were doing there anyway? They stood there all night, ram-rod straight with a funny expression. Well, perhaps, they were just tormented by all the hot music and unable to dance in those stiff green uniforms. To see more night haunts, click on b'packer's hcmc page

I took a walk around Rex Hotel, Contienental hotel and all that central area. I found it very busy and alive in the evenings (from 19h) but what surprised me most was the amazing number of motorcycles (mostly couples) riding around that area... not going anywhere, just hanging around, I never saw so many motorcycles together, seemed like a race!
