 | Ho Chi Minh City Nightlife Reviews | 1 - 10 of 78 | | In the mind of most tourists especially the younger generation, nightlife is a word associated with loud music, hard drinking, fast dancing, and all night partying. Like in all big cities, Saigon has a fair share of this type of entertainment, but ask any Saigonite over 25 years of age and he/she would tell you the night is better spent at nightclubs where well-known singers performing their craft. In Vietnamese language, these clubs are called "phòng trà", literally translated as tearoom. Why tea, no one knows, but the theory as my father told me when I was a wee child being to appreciate good music, one should not imbibe in alcohol, a substance that blurs one's vision, muffles one's hearing and dulls one's sense. That sounded like a good logic even to my early skeptical trait, so I accepted it without further question. Not all phòng trà cater to all audiences. The twenty and thirty-something go to Nghê Thường or 2B Lê Duẩn, the middle-agers to M & Tôi or Long Phụng, and the older generation or fans of "nhạc tiền chiến" (music created during or immediately after WWII years) head to ATB or Tiếng Tơ Ðồng. There is an entrance fee attached to the bill when you visit phòng trà. There is no dance floor so if you prefer a place to showcase your fancy footwork, you will need to visit "vũ trường" (dance club) instead. Leave a Comment Theme: Live Music

M & Tôi (the name is a play of word for "You and Me” with the "you" intent to be feminine) is the most famous "phòng trà" in Saigon. This is where the topnotch singers perform and where concerts are held regularly. There is an entrance fee of VND 100,000 (US$ 6) attached to the bill and at least one order of drink is expected. (Drinks run on the average of VND 50,000.) Don't expect too much on the quality or selection of drinks since they are not the forte of any phòng trà. The program starts at 9:00 PM and runs until midnight, but to get a good table, people begin to enter an hour earlier. Music in top phòng trà is always in Vietnamese language, so if you want to listen to the more familiar songs in English, nightclubs would probably be your suitable venue.
Dress code is not strictly observed, but you won't find a pair of sneakers, torn jeans, sweatshirt, or shorts in the house. The performers here always dress respectfully and so do the audience. Leave a Comment Theme: Live MusicAddress: 39 Lê Duẩn, District 1Phone: 823 39 48

My Hubby's French Colleague wanted to go this place after the French Lonely Planet proclaimed that it was worth checking out. Even though it was not the real thing, sigh. Well, we went there by cab and I'm quite sure I could hear his french jaw drop with a dull thud when we reach there. The place was completely empty and this was TGIF! "Zees, iz the right plaze? " Oui, it was. The shop came complete with fake Hard Rock T-shirts. Well, since we were there, we decided to humour the disappointed French sod and sit with him for a round of drinks. Of course, we scooted off immediately after we finished. Particularly me, because I saw more than one amused cockroach scuttling around the premises and checking us out. C'est Abominable! We'll never rely on the French edition of Lonely Planet any more after this. To see more night haunts, click on b'packer's hcmc page

Bia hoi is Vietnam’s answer to tap beer. In Saigon, it is served in plastic pitchers with a big block of ice floating in it. This sounds odd but in this hot climate, it is almost necessary to keep the brew cold. One big advantage of this besides the beer being fresher is the how cheap it is compared to bottled and canned suds. At only 5000 dong (less than thirty cents)per liter, it is an offer you can’t refuse. They do not serve their own food, but you are allowed to bring food with you and there are always lots of places nearby to accommodate you. At this particular place, snack girls made the rounds too. We got peanuts (1000 dong) from one and another had these huge flat rice cakes, seasoned with poppy and sesame seeds for only 2000 dong. These were quite tasty and a perfect accompaniment to the refreshing if watered down brew.
It is a very casual affair and a great place to meet locals, how are only too happy to have a chat. Buy a round, it's cheap! Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: on D Cong QuynhDirections: This is near the Thai Binh market in the Pham Ngu Lao area of town.

When Benh Thanh Market closes at 6:30 pm, the side streets beside it then opens as a night markets. Pho Mua Sam Night Market is the real name of the Night Market, others might think that this is Benh Thanh Night Market. As in other night markets in Asia, they offer just about any other goods available in Ben Thanh but with an added bonus of a Hawker's Center Being Set up and offer lots of choices whether vietnamese or other asian foods at very cheap prices! It is open from 6:30 pm up to 12:00 am everyday. for the prices, I would suggest that you do your shopping at daytime since night markets tend to jack up their prices by 10-20% than daytime rates even if you haggle (hey, they have to pay for the electricity and the stalls!) but have fun at the Hawker Center Food for Culinary Food Tripping at budget prices!

Saigon again became a hotspot when it was opened to tourism in the 1990's and bars abd lounges grew like mushrooms, favorite places for night owls include Apocalypse Now, Rox Hotel Penthouse Bar, Saigon Saigon bar, Level 23, Coffee Lounge and a lot more, mostly concentrated in District 1. for the backpackers, Pham Ngu Lao is known for cheap drinks and for looking at no frills drinking and eating, try the Bia Hoi, these are stalls set up at night and offer cheap beers and bar chow and these places serve other food, though local vendors come by hawking peanuts, rice cakes, and other snacks. for those just wanting to lounge around and relax, Highlands Coffee Houses dot the City (a Rival of Starbucks) and they also offer free Wi-Fi.
If on the Bia Hoi's or at Pham Ngu Lao, none but for the bars like apocalypse now, smart casual. Theme: NightclubAddress: Saigon, Vietnam

Coffee Lounge is one of the Hippest Places in District 1, most of the crowd here are young, upscale Vietnamese in their early 20's and a smattering of tourists. The Bar has a lively scene where lounge and trance music are played. there is no entrance charge but the price for liquors and bar chow are on the expensive side (off course since this is a hotel) like Beer for 66,000 VND and spring rolls starting at 120,000 VND. You will meet a lot of Vietnamese Beauties here! opens 6:00 pm to 12:00 am everyday.

This place was opposite our hotel. So we started our day off at this place every morning with the little Vietnamese silver coffee pots, watching the comings and goings of the locals, kids on bikes off to school, vendors dragging around barrows full of vegetables, buses, motos etc. It also came alive at night, though we were not there clubbing, we could hear the hum of the music most of the night, although it didn't bother us. I took a walk around Rex Hotel, Contienental hotel and all that central area. I found it very busy and alive in the evenings (from 19h) but what surprised me most was the amazing number of motorcycles (mostly couples) riding around that area... not going anywhere, just hanging around, I never saw so many motorcycles together, seemed like a race! There are more than 10 Trung Nguyen coffee shops just in down town, but I myself usually choose the one which locates on Nguyen Van Chiem Street cause of its nice decoration and good location (next to Diamond plaza). Let find a dark and quite place to sit and order a cup of cafe den (black coffee) or cafe sua da (coffee + condensed milk + ice, Vietnamese coffee, to be liked by every local or foreigner). If you are afraid that you cannot sleep after drinking coffee, then get a glass of me da (tamarind juice). How do you think? Other Trung Nguyen coffee shops are at: 1. 114 Ly Tu Trong St, Dist 1 2. 44B Chu Manh Trinh St, Dist 1 3. 32 Mac Dinh Chi St, Dist 1 4. 1 Tran Hung Dao St, Dist 1 5. 349 Hai Ba Trung St, Dist 3 6. 150D Ly Chinh Thang St, Dist 3 7. 10 Nguyen Thong St, Dist 3 and many more...
