    Mekong: The Mekong Delta
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mekong Delta (Song Cuu Long, River of Nine Dragons) is the 'rice bowl' of the South. The urban sprawl ends abruptly and the Mekong begins. This is the most wealthy area of the country.

The South is well fed by the cultivation of the Mekong Delta. The Mekong river, which originates from Tibetan plateau flowing 4,500 km to Vietnam and to the sea with 9 different branches (nine dragons).

    Mekong: My Tho
  • Tip Rating:
  • My Tho is a Mekong delta town famous for its fruit orchards. It is some 70 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City. Until into the 17th century, My Tho was a town of the Khmer (Cambodians).

There is a Cao Dai temple there. If you do a tour to the Mekong Delta, you will go through My Tho. I think it's pronounced 'Me Tho'. You pass through some wonderful countryside down in this region.

Out of Saigon - Cao Dai Temple: Mass being celebrated
  • Tip Rating:
  • Prayers are conducted every 6 hours starting at midnight. Women enter the temple from the left, walk clockwise around the hall, then congregate on the left side for worship. Conversely, men enter from the right and walk counter-clockwise. Both genders give offerings that range from the conventional incense, fruit and flowers to more unusual gifts of tea and alcohol.

Location : Cao Dai Temple, Tay Ninh

    Mekong: Thoi Son (Phung Islands)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Thoi Son (Phung Islands) the tropical fruit island - lunch at Trung Luong restaurant for Fried Elephant-eared fish. I can tell you that I wasn't too keen on riding in this little boat (not fussed being that close to the water) and I positioned myself in the middle with both my feet bracing either side of the boat with strict instructions to the others not to move and rock the boat..:-)

Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ann's Tourist Co., 58 Ton That Tung St., District 1 (tel. 08/833-2564 or 833-4356; fax 08/832-3866; www.anntours.com; e-mail: tony@anntours.com) offers great excursions. Ask for director Tony Nong.

FULL DAY EXCURSIONS: Cu Chi Tunnels and Tay Ninh Visit the underground tunnel in Cu Chi learning special tactics of revolution force used during the Vietnam war and Cao Dai temple in Tay Ninh with the ceremony at 12:00 noon. The Cao Dai religion is combination of Christian and Eastern religions. Cu Chi was an important base during the war because of its strategic location. The incredible 200km long network of hidden tunnels was used for storage, shelter, command posts, and hospitals. Continue on to the town of Tay Ninh, headquarters of one of Vietnam's most interesting religions, Caodism, an eclectic fusion Eastern and Western religious philosophies. Visit the Caodai Great Temple, a striking rococo structure built between 1933 and 1955.

Cu Chi Tunnels About 40 kilometres out of HCMC lie the historic and impressive Cu Chi Tunnels. Stretching over some 200 kilometres, the system of tunnels was began to be established as early as pre-WWII to hide the Communist guerillas that have historically resided in the area. The advent of theVietnam War meant the tunnels took on even greater importance, expanding to act as the logistical headquarters of the Tet offensive and allowing the North Vietnamese army to penetrate far into the south. The tunnels are so narrow that the government has widened some to allow foreign visitors to enter. Cu Chi and the Tunnels On the way back from Tay Ninh we stopped at Cu Chi to see the tunnels. There is an opportunity to fire an AK47. The cost is $1.00 per bullet. Dormitories, ammunition depots, conference rooms and even hospitals and schools were housed in the adjoining rooms, all safely underground, during the War.

Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: Shooting A Gun
  • Tip Rating:
  • Where I come from, possessing a gun or even a bullet, would land me in jail.
To actually shoot REAL bullets using a REAL GUN esp an AK47.... its a dream come true.

its US$6 for 5 bullets. That is the minimum you have to spend. The AK47 is really loud (would have love using a M16 - they ran out of bullets that day, I wonder why)
The ear muffs (no use at all as the sound of the gun is really loud) is cool

    I had a blast!
