Weather Gear: Of Mozzies and Sunglasses
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring lots of empty bags to shop. As for money, don't bother changing at the airport. Exchange rates suck big time there. USDs are acceptable everywhere and the exchange rates are more favourable at the hotel. E.g. Caravelle Hotel uses bank rates from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and they'll accept Sing/Aussie/Malaysian dollars.

Breathable Tops! Anything made of cool linen or cotten. "Teva" slippers are great for exploring HCMC or jumping around boats in Mekong Delta.

Maybe diarahhoea medication + hepatitis A+B shots before going. Hygeine sucks here but Malaria is not such a big problem here.

Good to bring lots of memory sticks, charger, etc,

Rain coats are a must in their rainy season. Umbrellas are useless when the winds are strong.

Ok, I really shouldn't say this but many Singaporeans say that the Vietnamese dong, look and feel a lot like "Hell Paper Money" Why? Coz it feels and looks like the paper currency we burn to the dead...No offence to Uncle Ho intended.

Clothing & Shoes: Insect Repellent and sunscreens are a must
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vietnamese family and friends over there loves American wares. Bring soap, toothpaste, mouthwash.

If you come during raining season, bring an Anorek for sudden shower in the afternoon. I didn't have any problem in November.

I brought stuff for upset stomach. Luckily I didn't have to use it. If you wear contact lenses, bring eyes drop or better yet, wear your glasses. It's so dusty there that you won't be able to go all day in your contact lenses. Also, bring a small pack of wet wipes. They come in handy in some restaurants that don't have napkins. When eating at restaurants, don't use those cloth towels. It's OK to use the disposable wet wipes. Also, they charge you for using those.

Clothing & Shoes: What to bring and what to leave behind
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring one small bag with essentials only. If you need another bag to take home accumulated souvenirs etc you can buy this very cheaply in Ho Chi Minh City

Take only 2 days worth of clothing with you. Clothes are extremely cheap in Ho Chi Minh City

Only bring essential medicines. All other items can be bought in Ho Chi Minh City, including most intenational brands (e.g. toothpaste, soap, shampoo etc).

Film and photo processing are of a high standard. Same day film processing and print is the norm.

Bring a Mobile Phone. Phone calls outside Vietnam are very expensive, but domestic calls and text messages are very cheap. Text messaging is a cheap way of keeping contact overseas. Make sure the phone you bring is a GSM phone.

Clothing & Shoes: Basic survival gear
  • Tip Rating:
  • Summer clothes is recommended for HCM city. The country is pretty hot year round, with exception of the north. The north can get pretty chilly during winter months (10-15C or 25-30F). White shoes are not recommended, your shoes will look a year old by 1 day. Cargo pants that convert into shorts are probably the best type of pants you can pack with you when travelling through this city.

    Weather Gear: Eye protection...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I would recommend anyone heading to Saigon (HCMC) to bring a pair of sunglasses. The city is very dusty and it's a good idea to have some sort of eye protection. You can even bring your chemistry lab googles for all I care...hahaha....Just bring something to protect your eyes from the dust. If you are planning to ride scooters around, then it's a must. Besides, it'll make you look cool....hahaha ;)

Try to travel light. This is an advice I have heard from fellow visitors who have been to HCMC. Alas, the advice went deaf with me! If you are a die-hard shopping fan like me, you will go really wild there! Things are so cheap and you can get almost everything you need. However, you need to have a small sling bag or pouch if you are considering to visit the remote places like Mekong Delta or Cu Chi Tunnels.

Wear light clothes. Weather is can be hot and do remember to bring your sunglasses for UV protection. For shoes, wear comfortable ones as you have to do quite a fair bit of walking for sightseeing or shopping! Seriously, you need a good pair of shoes for visiting Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels. I saw a Japanese tourist wear high heels to Cu Chi Tunnels!!!

Do bring the standard medical supplies such as panadol. For toiletries, most hotels would provide that - so that save tons of space in your luggage. Do bring lots of sunblock - you need that!

And not forgetting the Lonely Planet! I literally survived on it!

    Backpack
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just recently retired my old Karrimor backpack. This is a new Karrimor Global 50-70liters. It come with a removable day sack which is very useful for camera storage, guide books & etc. I didn't mean to say that only expensive backpack fit for long travel, but you definitely don't want your inner secrets pouring out at airport checking points because the zipper give way.

The Karrimor Global, is one of the 'world traveler' rucksacks with so many features i may need extra columns to write about it. The Karrimor Global is aimed at serious travelers, capable of conversion from a suitcase to a proper rucksack. The Global can cope with airlines and trekking porters all in one go. The Karrimor Global also comes with the Karrimor Gold Star guarantee which puts in the true 'lifetime' category. The carrying system is hidden behind a zipped panel which rolls away into a small storage pocket to reveal the SA Super Cool back system, within a few seconds your suitcase becomes a rucksack.

    Clothing & Shoes: DENIM
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just a suggestion. Something I will never do again is wear denim (either jeans or shorts) while on trips that require any type of excerise. You sweat, and it gets wet and does not dry. Chafes a hell of a lot and is not pleasant in the heat. Denim is fine for evening when you are not doing a lot physically, but for daytime wear I would opt for light cotton or board short type fabric. - Just my thoughts on this.

This is up to you. Digital is wonderful, and more convenient, but Film (SLR) gives far better picture quality and colour quality (unless you have a digital SLR which I hope to get soon)

    Clothing & Shoes: Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • Travel light - arrive with little luggage. If you need additional luggage, you can buy them in Vietnam for less than $10.

comfortable walking shoes - Naturalizer soft leather sandals.

I used a digital camera, but bring a large memory card or extra ones. If possible, have all your pictures developed in Vietnam. It's much cheaper!
