Nam An: Flash Viet Cuisine
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are plenty of quality restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City but the one which did it for me was Nam An. Sure it is a bit more expensive than some of the other places but it really has a nice feel to it.

Plus it was my 10th wedding anniversary so that made it a bit more special.

They offer a full range of Vietnamese food from all areas. I am a big fan of Vietnamese spring rolls so went nuts on them with lots of great sample size dishes, a kind of Vietnamese tapas.

Lovely Vietnamese Beef Pho!: Not a restaurant but a street stall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Eat with the locals at this street stall serving piping hot Vietnamese Beef Pho (noodles). Run by a middle aged lady (I hope she is still there), a bowl of noodles cost you only 6000dongs. She does not speak English so use sign language. Condiments, chillis, fresh herbs and vegetable are available on the tables, so add them as much as you desire into your hot bowl of noodles and slurp them up in gusto. Her stall is situated in the Pham Ngu Lao area, about 5 minutes walk from Mdm Cuc's Hotel 64, after turning right. Hope you can find her and Bon Appetit!

    Quan An Ngon: Packed nightly
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We asked our hotel deskperson where to go for good but inexpensive food, and he told us to come here....when we saw the outside of this place we were a little worried as it looked nice, but expensive. There was a HUGE amount of people lining up also, and quite a lot of foreigners. So atleast, we thought, it would be safe. Anyway we were still seated within about 5 minutes, and although the menu covered just about everything in Vietnamese cuisine, everything was edible and of pretty good flavor. I wouldn't say it was the BESTmeal we had but solid and a great introduction to anyone venturing into VN food for the first time.

Can't pick a favorite.....the banh xeo was OK for a restaurant version.

If you suddenly find yourself in a rain storm on Dong Du, duck into this little gem of a place and watch the drama unfold from from a cozy chair.

This very thing happened to us as we were just around the corner from the Java Cafe so we went in to take a load off and sat watching people scurry by the window with newpapers covering their heads and the street sweeper lady with her cart of palm fonds.

An excellent place to ride out one of those infamous tropical storms.

As you can see from the picture above, it's quite large inside and the ceilings are high so you get a nice airy feel, almost as if you were sitting on a porch.

    Pacific Beer: Pacific Beer
  • Tip Rating:
  • A very unknown place to tourists but very popular with locals because a glass of draft beer costs only 3000 dong or 20 cents. 3 glasses is more than enough to do me in so that's 60 cents in total!! The menu items are also worth checking out. Other than being inexpensive, it's traditional Vietnamese cooking at its best!

Bo Lok Lap - I know I spelt it wrong but I always order this dish when I eat here. It contains medium rare diced beef with a side order of French fries. Yum!

I don't know the exact location but I do know it is within District one near the Notre Dame cathedral on Le Thanh Ton.

    SPAIN restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just couldn't believe when I saw it, but there it was!! A spanish restaurant in Saigon!! At the neon sign, the bull, the guitar, no doubt!

I wish I could have gone inside, but it was closed at the time I passed by and I was leaving that evening, so I missed the opportunity to taste a piece of my country in Vietnam.

I leave U the tip for you to try, and please mail me back and tell me how was the experience ;-)))

Quan An Ngon: Quan An Ngon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ngon in Vietnamese translates to 'delicious' and this restaurants lives up to its name! I guarantee patrons will not be disappointed with the variety of items on their menu. Prices are very reasonable with a great outdoor-indoor eating experience. I've almost always patronize with a local friend so i'm not entirely sure as to whether or not the servers speak English but they do however have English on the menus. My absolute fave...

Lemongrass: A very popular place ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A lovely small three-story restaurant on a street with several good ones including Pho 24 [see next tip] It is considered upscale and touristy, but serves some of the best food in the city.

The grilled beef salad with mango [pictured] was rather nice :)

Pho 2000: Pho 2000: Not exactly hitting my tastebuds
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Well, this restaurant is in the Lonely Planet on HCMC and it seems Bill Clinton was slurping Vietnamese noodles (Pho Bo) here when he visited Vietnam. The walls certainly provided evidence of his visit. I had my first meal at this restaurant, simply it was very near to Ben Thanh market and I was famished. The restaurant is clean and the staff wore uniform so it certainly looked more hygienic than the street stalls. Service however was a little lacklustre (maybe I wasn't looking that presidential), my several attempts to catch the waiters attention was largely ignored. The food is passable (I had better pho elsewhere eventually).

I had a hot steaming bowl of pho bo and one plate of goi cuon (fried spring rolls). Edible, reasonably tasty, hygienic looking but not oh-my-god outstanding.

Eat & Drink like the locals: Local Fare
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • After walking around the site of the Cu Chi Tunnels, our guide took us down the steep stairs to yet another underground grotto.
There was a long table with benches to sit on.

We were served pineapple and cassava with some type of crushed peanuts and sugar mixture to dip the pieces of food into.
The different textures and tastes complemented each other perfectly. We had the obligatory green tea to wash it all down.
