It's difficult for vegetarians here, the Vietnamese don't really get the concept, except in the context of Budhism. My mother in law is budhist vegetarian, but will "eat around" the meat if she has to, also often seafood is thought of a vegetarian fare. So putting this one in to keep my photo editor (veggy) happy. Tib Chay (same owners as Tib in Hai Ba trung) is the long running vegetarian restaurant, nice wood clad setting and very reasonably priced. This is supposed to be a high end Vietnamese restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the prices were value for money. I came here because my companion was muslim and she was not as adventurous to try the local hawker food.
First, the restaurant itself has two storeys and is cozy with a colonial feel to it. At night, the place was lit up in bright colorful bulbs. Service was excellent, friendly & attentive and waiters & waitresses are dressed in their traditional costumes. The menu itself was easy to read with dishes written in English plus pictures.
I must say we were pretty greedy because we ordered too much plus drinks so if we had ordered just enough, the bill would've been less. Nevertheless, I'd love to return here again
We started with delicious crab spring rolls which were so tasty & crunchy. Then, it was fried calamari with a sweet & spicy sauce
Then we had the fresh seafood steamboat (small) which came with a selection of shrimps, fish, squid & noodles. This is a place you can bring a first date to, or just chill with friends. Prices are pretty reasonable for the quality of food /service you get here but not cheap. Food quality is generally higher than average. (We ordered pizza and pasta dishes.) Their tiramisu cake is a rather small portion but every bite tasted heavenly! Finishing a meal with their perfect tiramisu cake was very satisfying.
I would go back to this restaurant if I visit Ho Chi Minh city again.

TIRAMISU CAKE! I can taste the liquers mixed into a smooth luscious texture and the kahlua-dipped ultra-thin sponge layers in between. This was the best Pho I have ever had. The alley blue sign said 'Cu Xa Van Hoa 288. Nam Ky Khoi Nghia'. It's over there by the art galleries or by the stinking bridge - Cau Cong Ly. Go down this alley - all the way to the back at the end - don't stop at any of the other open vendors in this alley. There is a place that looks like an open garage with tables and no-back metal chairs. Get there early if you want certain meat selection.

The baked clams hors d'oeuvre was wonderfully done, with generous amount of garlic. So were the seafood thermidor and duck in orange sauce.

We made arrangements with our motorcycle drivers from earlier in the day to take us out of downtown HCMC for a good cheap dinner. They drove us south, past the Ho Chi Minh Museum to a small restaurant along the main road. We had a great dinner of beef, peppers, rice and Ba Ba Ba (333) Beer at a very low price. We were the only westerners to venture out to this restaurant and any of the others in the area. Leave a Comment
