Stores & Markets: Asian lighting - unique and lovely
  • Tip Rating:
  • A small shop specializing in candle holders, candles, lighting, home decorating and unique fashions

Whatever you are entranced with. You will be and you decide. I loved the lighting, it was so unique and elegant, but very understated. Perfect.

Not expensive. It just depends on what you are buying.

Stores & Markets: Ben Thay Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The market and surrounding streets make up one of the liveliest areas.
It was built in 1914 from reinforced concrete; the main cupola is 28m in diameter. The main entrance has become a symbol of HCM.

Everything that you could want to eat, wear or use is available here: veges, fruit, meat, spices, bikkies, lollies, tobacco, clothing, hats, plasticware etc.

Asia is a great place to get your fresh fruit and vegetable. I have a predilection for tropical fruit, bananas, rambutans, papayas, longans, yes even durians. They are dirt cheap, whereas apples and grapes are expensive by comparison. In some places, you can even buy them off the tree. We bought a kilo of longans for less than USD0.75!!! I know someone who once cleaned two kilos of rambutans in one sitting. Okay okay, I admit it, it was me.

Books: Buying Books from Street Vendors
  • Tip Rating:
  • I NEVER thought I’d make this recommendation! If you’re like me you’ll want to LIMIT THE READING MATERIAL YOU BRING INTO VIETNAM

The reason I am saying this is twofold.

    1) I found very little time to read while I was in Vietnam. Even when I needed to unwind I found myself looking out my window or chilling in a café watching the action on the street rather than picking up a book. In fact, I didn’t read a single book my entire time in Vietnam (I cannot say this about any other country I have visited)

    2) Local children in the big cities sell a wide variety of books at inexpensive prices…so buy your books from them…they cost less than you’ll pay at home AND most of the children selling things on the street are doing it to supplement the families meager income so they can afford to go to school.

Tourist areas in Saigon and Hanoi are filled with children carrying several feet of books in their arms. If they don’t have a book you want ask for a catalogs and take a seat… They talked me into buying 7 books…one I bought just for the title, “There is no Toilet Paper on the Road Less Traveled”

Underprivileged children, Land mine and agent orange victims are all on the street trying to make a living. So buy your bottled water, travel guides, books, post cards and tiger balm from them and make their life a little better. It may cost you a few cents more but it will make a big difference in their lives.

    Clothes: Bargain basement

Saigon is a bargain basement in more ways than one. Clothing is probably cheapest. My companions bought fabric and had several dresses tailor-made. I myself had some suits made for somewhere around $20/each. However, to get the best deal, you'd have to bargain. This is unnatural even for me, who speaks Vietnamese fluently. You don't have to be an expert haggler, but as a rule of thumb shouldn't fall for the first price the vendor quotes. Or the second. Or the third.

Backpackers (known as Tay Ba Lo or "backpack-westerner" in Vietnamese) mostly concentrate in the Pham Ngu Lao area of District 1. Many domestic tourists come here to "see the hippies" :) I saw a street vendor with a stack of reproduced Lonely Planet guidebooks for less than $5 each. Hmm, but I already got my VT!

    Stores & Markets: Murah-Murah
  • Tip Rating:
  • These shopkeepers certainly knows the Malay word "Murah-murah" which means "cheap, cheap" in English. Bargain at slightly more than 50% and slowly work from that. Or you could confuse them by parital bargaining in local dong and then switching over to US dollar and back to dong, (not necessary in that sequence) Works for me everytime.

The shops near the entrances and exit of this market somehow has got fixed prices, So bargaining is not encouraged. But if you go further in those little alleys, bargain as much as possible

Lacquer ware, Vietnamese silk (price range from US$2 to US$ per metre), wooden carvings, coffee (price range from US$1 to US US$ per 100 gm) and lots of other stuff.

    Sinh Cafe: Day Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • I read of Sinh Cafe in this site but since we travelled via a package tour to Ho Chi Minh, I didn't think I will encounter the services of this cafe.

It was a such a surprise that our tour package was courtesy of the ever-reliable Sinh Cafe. Sinh Cafe is located in the tourist district. It cannot be missed as daily tourist buses leave from there.

There are other tour operators in this street so find out the package that best suits your taste.

Buses are clean, tours are cheap and cater mostly to European tourists.

    Day Tours
    Open Bus Tours
    Border Crossing to Cambodia
Since it's also a cafe, you can have your taste of pho here.

City tours ($4 half day and $5 whole day)
Day trips to Cu Chi and Cao Dai Temple ($5), Mekong Delta, open bus tours to other parts of Vietnam and border crossing to Cambodia. Buses leave at 7:30 am for long-distance destinations and 8:15 am for city tours.

    Clothes: Vietnam T-shirts

  • Blue embroidered T-shirt - Ho Chi Minh City
    Blue embroidered T-shirt

You can find many shops selling T-shirts but in Ben Thanh market, you can find many, many stalls where you can choose & bargain from

You can buy T-shirts from the upscale souvenir shops e.g in hotels but expect to pay 10x - 20x more!!

I'm not going to encourage anyone out there to purchase any fake designer shirts even though they do come in very tempting prices. However, T-shirts made in Vietnam are pretty nice to bring home as souvenirs or gifts to pass around because not only they are inexpensive, they come in nice designs too especially the ones with the embroidery

Personally, I find the cheaper T-shirts are quite thin (but good to wear in a hot & humid place like Saigon) but with the low prices, it's value for money. Plus, they're pretty handy if you forgot to pack extra clothes

Some stalls are notorious because even after I bargained for half the price of the item, I found other places that sell them for less than that. I guess they know the trick so they push the price higher

So, the cheapest T-shirts I bought were US$1 for printed tees and US$2 for T-shirts with embroidery

Stores & Markets: Cheaper than Ben Thanh
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its definitely cheaper to get stuff from here than Ben Thanh. BUT the variety is less. However, I noticed that the handicrafts are much more here and the best thing about is that there arent many tourist coming over to this side of town. So the vendors are much less fussy to "jack" up the price and much more willing to offer a good price for their wres. YOU STILL HAVE TO BARGAIN tho'

I got this nice "painting" in semi precious stones. If you have more time in HCMH, do spend time here. You won't regret it. This market is in District 5 which beyond the ever popular District 1 (touristy area)

If you want you could try Ben Thanh Market which is a bit higher priced than here. If you want Paintings, this Ben Thanh or Andong market is NOT the place to get it.

    Other Interesting HCMC Places

    Handicrafts
    perishables
    Painting
    Model ships

You have to bargain. Start at least 40% from the price you are quoted

The Ben Thanh market is a busy, bustling place. It's a bit hot and stuffy as well but, being that is is under a roof, you can at least count on the fact that the sun won't be beating down on your head while you shop.

There are certainly tourists at this famous landmark but there are plenty of locals as well. It's a great place to soak up a little culture as you bargain for mother-of-pearl inlaid purses and horn soup spoons.

You can buy all types of items here.

Coffee, spices, shoes, purses, kitchen items, plates, spoons, pans, clothing, fabric, sunglasses, watches, robes, junk toys, etc.

As far pricing goes, anything is possible. Well, except zero of course! One of the keys to striking a good deal is the willingness to walk away. Even if you just LOVE the item in question, you must not let on. Be casual, be cool. Otherwise, if they smell blood, you're dinner!

Always smile when haggling and never look at the item you really want first. Look at a few other things and then casually pick it up and ask the price.

I have a longer tip on haggling listed in my travelogue section, here's the address...
