Stores & Markets: Murah-Murah
  • Tip Rating:
  • These shopkeepers certainly knows the Malay word "Murah-murah" which means "cheap, cheap" in English. Bargain at slightly more than 50% and slowly work from that. Or you could confuse them by parital bargaining in local dong and then switching over to US dollar and back to dong, (not necessary in that sequence) Works for me everytime. The shops near the entrances and exit of this market somehow has got fixed prices, So bargaining is not encouraged. But if you go further in those little alleys, bargain as much as possible

Lacquer ware, Vietnamese silk (price range from US$2 to US$ per metre), wooden carvings, coffee (price range from US$1 to US US$ per 100 gm) and lots of other stuff.

Stores & Markets: Cheaper than Ben Thanh
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its definitely cheaper to get stuff from here than Ben Thanh. BUT the variety is less. However, I noticed that the handicrafts are much more here and the best thing about is that there arent many tourist coming over to this side of town. So the vendors are much less fussy to "jack" up the price and much more willing to offer a good price for their wres. YOU STILL HAVE TO BARGAIN tho' I got this nice "painting" in semi precious stones. If you have more time in HCMH, do spend time here. You won't regret it. This market is in District 5 which beyond the ever popular District 1 (touristy area) If you want you could try Ben Thanh Market which is a bit higher priced than here. If you want Paintings, this Ben Thanh or Andong market is NOT the place to get it. Other Interesting HCMC Places

    Handicrafts perishables Painting Model ships

You have to bargain. Start at least 40% from the price you are quoted

The Ben Thanh market is a busy, bustling place. It's a bit hot and stuffy as well but, being that is is under a roof, you can at least count on the fact that the sun won't be beating down on your head while you shop. There are certainly tourists at this famous landmark but there are plenty of locals as well. It's a great place to soak up a little culture as you bargain for mother-of-pearl inlaid purses and horn soup spoons.

You can buy all types of items here. Coffee, spices, shoes, purses, kitchen items, plates, spoons, pans, clothing, fabric, sunglasses, watches, robes, junk toys, etc.

As far pricing goes, anything is possible. Well, except zero of course! One of the keys to striking a good deal is the willingness to walk away. Even if you just LOVE the item in question, you must not let on. Be casual, be cool. Otherwise, if they smell blood, you're dinner! Always smile when haggling and never look at the item you really want first. Look at a few other things and then casually pick it up and ask the price. I have a longer tip on haggling listed in my travelogue section, here's the address... http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/4e42f/#TL

    Stores & Markets: Thuan Kieu
  • Tip Rating:
  • To get more of the feel of Vietnam’s local malls, try the Thuan Kieu shopping mall conveniently located in Cholon, Chinatown. Though it is an air conditioned mall, shop owners are more than willing to make a sale and lower prices so sample your haggling skills here when the sun is too much to handle. Top floor also holds an array of video games and food court.

literally a one-stop shop... benh tanh has everything you would possibly need. from souvenier items, clothes, shoes, food, fruits, etc.

for coffee lovers, get some vietnamese coffee. the special weasel flavor is exceptionally good. 20,000 dong for 100g. roughly 1.25USD per 100g

fairly cheap.. haggling is a MUST

Stores & Markets: Cho An Dong
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pronounced "Jor An Dumb", the indoor market of Cholon, Chinatown. Not as central as the famous Ben Thanh Market in district 1, but still brimming with exotic goods and pungent smells for western nostrils. Similar to that of Ben Thanh but through the local's perspective, An Dong prices are generally cheaper.

Stores & Markets: Ben Thanh Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • As Trang says, " That is market of rich person" Go here for the experience. Don't buy anything other than touristy souveniers that you can't find elsewhere. Much of the stuff is the same. You can go a half a block away and save maybe 15-20000vnd on a t shirt Go to many other markets nearby, as these are cheaper. Or go to one of the coopmarts for everyday stuff. The fun part of Cho Ben Thanh is to go in the tight clothing aisle and the women grab your arms trying to pull you down, "sir! sir, what are you looking for?"

    Souvenier stuffs

a lot more than other places especially if you are foriegner

Stores & Markets: Ben Thanh Night Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ben Thanh night market opens from 5pm to 11 pm. Limited stalls, which sell mostly very similar things - knock-off sports clothing, hair accessories, bags, shoes, toys. Plus point - its spacious, fewer tourists, and its cooler to shop at night

Knock-off Sports clothing - shorts for S$7, drifit shirts for S$9 (watch out for zips) - sometimes the storekeepers have more designs on display - so ask her to show you all in the size you want. You get a better bargain, with more pieces you buy. Ladies tennis set - top/skorts - S$10. Souvenir Ts - S$2

Stores & Markets: Discounts for $100 Bill

  • Selecting robes at Ben Thanh Market - Ho Chi Minh City
    Selecting robes at Ben
    Thanh Market

I've mentioned before how most of the vendors prefer you to pay in US dollars but, what we found interesting, was the extreme interest of one lady that we pay with a US $100 bill. We were haggling for robes and such with a vendor at the Ben Thanh Market and were buying quite a bit from her so hubby was trying to get a better deal. Naturally, we were tourists so we knew we were paying the "high price" but as the negotiation went on, it was clear that she wanted US dollars and not Dong. Then, as it progressed a little further, we discoverd she not only wanted US dollars, she wanted a US $100 bill. "no 20's!" she said. Hubby used this to our advantage and ended up telling her that if she'd give us the whole lot for $100US we'd pay with a $100 bill. Worked like a charm. Rather than only getting a 20-30% we walked away with a 47% discount by paying her with a C note. So, keep this in mind when making larger purchases at the market. $100 bills get a premium beyond their simple monetary worth.

Nice robes with dragons on the back!

That's determined by your bargaining skills :)
