Stores & Markets: Binh Tay market
Slightly different selection than Cho Ben Thanh. Less touristy. Has everyday stuff and some things you didn't find at Ben Thanh. Cheaper and less crowded you can see some video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57SBN8-jvm8

    what ever you want

  • Directions: In district 6. Make sure you have a map because sometimes taxi driver doesnt understand where you want to go in Q 6. Often guidebook map does not include much of Q6. If lost go to Cafe Pho Dem, 48 Minh Phung, Quan 6, ask Kieu to help you.

Stores & Markets: Cho Hoa Binh
I came across this market while wandering around the west end of District 1 and the east end of District 5. I'm not quite sure of where exactly it is but it seemed like a decent local market. I really like the architecture of this place and the fact that it wasn't touristy at all.

Stores & Markets: Dan Sinh Market
This market is also known as the War Surplus Market. If you need fatigues or dog tags then this is the place to get them. You can even get gas masks and field stretchers. The vendors will try to get you to buy "souvenirs" from the war such as zippo lighters, dog tags, and shell casings. These are mostly fake. Basically anything real and worth buying from the American/Vietnam War was taken long ago. The funniest exchange I had was with a guy that said that he had Vietnam's highest medal for sale at $35. He said it was real. I know that only around 14 of these medals have been awarded and I know that they go to people such as Brezhnev, Ho Chi Minh, General Giap, etc. Thus there was no possible way that this thing was real. The guy was trying so hard though.

Stores & Markets: Shop Till Ya Drop!!!
If you're in the mood for a little shopping (and you're not on a budget), one shopping destination is the Diamond Plaza Shopping Center. It's a good place to escape from the heat (or rain, depending on the season) and crowded streets for a while. You'll find a bowling alley and billiard tables on the 4th floor. You can even catch a movie on the 13th floor. Chances are that the movie came out 6 months ago, but ya never know. If you're burnt out on Vietnamese food and craving good ole fashioned heart-clogging fast food, indulge in some Kentucky Fried Chicken.... finger-lick'n good! =P

Everything is at prices you'll find at home, so it's certainly not a bargain.

Stores & Markets: Fancy some lacquerware?
This is a factory producing lacquerware.A tour will guide you on the materials used and the different types of lacquerware produced.Working staff is producing the lacquerware inside and you might want to see them in action.A very high quality piece of lacquerware takes a lot of detailed work to be done.

Stores & Markets: Le Xuan Art Gallery
Li Giang is the manager. We haggled a bit and I bought a great oil tapestry for $300. It was from a well know local artist, and this is one of the best galleries for local art in HCM. It may not look it but it is. Check it out

Art of course. Samll to large - whatever you like.

Start to negotiate - price depends on type of item and quality.

    Stores & Markets: Paintings everywhere..
Wherever you walk, you are bound to pass by some painting shops... They are all painted by the locals and for a medium size piece, you can get about US$10.. Bought one painting of the Halong Bay to decorate my room.. Very nice piece.. They are very light so no worry about excess baggage :)
