    Wherever you walk, you are bound to pass by some painting shops...

    They are all painted by the locals and for a medium size piece, you can get about US$10..
    Bought one painting of the Halong Bay to decorate my room.. Very nice piece.. They are very light so no worry about excess baggage :)

  • Its too expensive to buy anything here, but there is an atm on ground level, a food court and convenience mart on the 2nd level and a movie theater on 13th floor

    Random sundries may be found in these stall-type shops. Typical "tourist-oriented" items are T-shirts, Vietnam History Books, Military Goods such as engraved Zippo lighters (some are fake and are priced accordingly according to a shopkeeper we regularly met).

    Silk and other clothing may also be tailored.

    For health items, there were both domestic and imported brands, and didn't see any chain-style "supermarkets" or "convenience stores" at my last visit (Spring 2000).

    This handbag shop sells everything from upmarket designer copy handbags to cheap fashionable handbags. Both my wife & me bought a lot of handbags here. Price ranging from USD$5 - USD$20 every item in the shop is tag with its selling price, so.. feel at ease buying cause there is no way that the shop will slash you. A part from handbags the shop also carries designer copy wallets both for men & women.

    This shop is located in a district known as Quan GoVap, name street is Nguyen Kiem, F3, shop number 625B, shop name CityGirl Fashion... is actually near the Ho Chi Minh international airport. The shop is run by 2 ladies which... well to our surprise happens to be sisters.. one of them speaks english and they are extremely patient and courteous... despite of my wife's fickle mind.. they still serve with a smile. I have actually recommended many of my friends to the shop since then and their responds were all positive. SO... overall my wife & me give a 2 thumbs up for this handbag shop in Ho Chi Minh City!!

  • There are 4 departmental stores in HCMC: Tax Center, Diamond Plaza, Parkson and Saigon Duty Free Shop that I am aware of. As I was short of time, I did not go to Ben Thanh market instead I bought all my souvenirs from 2 stores in Tax Center on Nguyen Hue St near Rex Hotel & Duxton Hotel. The are all kinds of lacquer ware and paintings, they are very reasonable and you can bargain a little. The stores are on the 3rd Floor.

    Bad experience....

    I wanted to go Cholon Market cos of the abundant textiles.. yes, they have lots of shops selling textile ard the market but we reached ard 6pm so most the shops are closed... worst of all, they dont sell Vietnam Silk!!! All are China silk, Thai Silk, etc... But no Vietnam Silk!! Each set of Thai/China silk cost more than VND300k...

    By the way, some of the vietnamese told us that cholon market closes at 9.30pm... Feel so cheated again... Abit pissed off actually...

    Since most the shops were closed, I walked to the Cholon Market... About 10 mins walk..
    This is a wholesaler.. they dont sell 1-2 piece items.. all items have to be bought in bulk i.e. 10 pieces or more... and they dont entertain you at all if you want to buy 1-2 pieces.. they will tell you to get lost... the vendors are very rude... They were closing when we arrived so even if u are interested to purchase something from them, they will not sell it to you cos they are busy packing!... #@$%^%&%...

    believe it or not, there's no bargaining!! They will give you the "If you want, buy.. If not, pls go away" attitude...

    It's such a wasted trip & I didnt buy anything... Pls note that Cholon Market is in Dictrict 5.. The cab fare cost me abt VND60k one way from District 1...

    The Ben Thanh Market may close at about 6pm in the evening. However, the shopping continues with the Ben Thanh Night Market. Stalls around the market would spring up after dark and the bustling activities would continue into late night.

    Whatever available during the day market is also available in the night market except for fresh food. Stalls selling cooked food would also line on one side of the road while the other stalls selling items like clothes, handicraft etc would fill the rest of the roads around the market.

    Do remember to polish your bargaining skill. Honestly speaking, I feel that prices in the night market are much better than the day market! Happy shopping!

  • Becareful of "leather" goods that seem too cheap to be true, it probably isn't. There are many places that sell pretty convincing fake leather, particularly aligator/crocodile leather, which may not show its true colors until you are long gone from the country. Stick with the old adage that if it is too good to be true it probably is.

    Easily available in all the shops in district 1 (different embroided prints, colour etc)

    Embroided pouches - nice and presentable souvenirs especially if you have a bunch of gfs or a group of female colleagues

    Bargain! Should be around US$0.50 for a small pouch

    I was walking around the city when I came across this souvenier shop.. Full of ships handicraft & it's cheap..

    Bought a wall clock for only US$10 and some fridge magnets at 3 for US$1..

    But I can't remember where are the shops.. It's somewhere near Hai Ba Trung..
