Ben Thanh market: Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) most touristic market!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in the mood for shopping, do not miss the Ben Thanh Market. Centrally located and popular with tourists, it sells everything from fake Nike shoes to silk ao dai. This is one of the best places to pick up conical hats and ao dai. The market and surrounding streets make up one of the city's liveliest areas. Everything that's commonly eaten, worn or used by the Saigonese is available here: vegetables, meats, spices, sweets, tobacco, clothings, household items, hardwares, coffee powder and souvenir worthy items. Known to French as Les Halles Centrales, it was built in 1914 from reinforced concrete; the central cupola is 28m in diameter. The main entrance, with its belfry and clock, has become a symbol of HCMC.

Ben Thanh market: Shop till you drop
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ben Thanh market has been a popular landmark, not only for those interested in history but also in shopping. Under one roof, the market has hundreds of stalls that sell all sorts of day to day items from fashion wear, lacquer ware, bedspreads, fake designer goods, local handicrafts, local produce and foodstallswhere you can have a break from all that shopping Whilst I'm no mad shopper, I did briefly enjoy following my lady friends on a shopping spree which involved the purchase of countless silk & beaded handbags, T-shirts, linens, fake designer branded wear & other pretty little trinkets. They shopped to the point they could no longer carry anymore shopping bags Shopping that can make you mad, I kid you not. You can get some serious bargains on nice stuff in here but you have to bargain, bargain, bargain!! Start at half the asking price & negotiate and if they say they can't lower it down, you can leave for another stall but they will call you back. Normally the more you buy, the more willing they are to give you a "discount" And if you do get the price you want (about half the asking price), the sellers will call you a "mafia". I got called "mafia" lots of time at Ben Thanh :)

Ben Thanh market: Cholon - Binh Tay Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bin Tay Market is about twenty minutes southwest of the Reunification Palace via motorcycle. It is a huge, two-story, orange building with a square clock tower in the center. Under the clock tower reads "Cho Bin Tay," in case you are not sure of your location. This place is jam packed with everything including toiletries, dishes, alcohol, and souvenirs. We spent about 15 minutes here, but I just wasn't that impressed by the throngs of people and heaps of junk at this "Wal-Mart on steroids."

Ben Thanh market: Bargains to be Had
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Ben Thanh Market is a bargainers haven. Not only is it a fun place to visit to see all the colors and the many millions of things that are on sale, but it is a really friendly atmosphere to test your bargaining skills in. My husband and I found so many great deals on clothing that really washed up and maintained well. You have to be willing to do the walk away to get a good deal. The Ben Thanh Market sells anything you can imagine. The place is arranged by product. There is a whole butcher area selling meats, there is a floral section, there is a section where you can sit and have lunch and enjoy wonderful fruit juices or a soda, there is a clothing section, a section that sells coffee, a section that sells produce, others that sell stautuettes, jewerly, etc. If you get lost, just look up at the number on the vending stall since all the sections are given a number. Also to note, there is a section of the market that looks more like a store. In this part of the market there is no haggling. This area is run by a hired employee who isn't allowed to haggle. The prices are higher in this area and the quality of the product isn't any better than within the market.

Ben Thanh market: Ben Thanh Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everyone knows about this one :o) We had heard so much about it that we had to hit the market to try our bartering skills. ....and got some great bargains!! I bought a lovely pair of carved shoes - originally $12US, but I got them for $9US. Also bought some lovely costume jewlery - two nice pieces for $7US - originally $10US. Kelli was ruthless!! ...buying Louis Vatton bags and helping Howie with bargaining for watches and shirts for a pittance. All in all, we had loads of fun :o)

Ben Thanh market: HCMC daily life
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ben Thanh Market is a must see. To walk thru and gain an insight into the daily life of the residents is fantastic. It is also a good place to buy shirts but the best part is to sit down to a bowl of pho bo and the locals will love you for it. They will talk with you, once they stop laughing, and it makes the day worth it.

    Ben Thanh market: Market Goods
  • Tip Rating:
  • Only a few weeks earlier, an American woman had been stabbed in the market but I believe it was an isolated case. She was ok. The market is busy but just take care of your bag when it is crowded.

Ben Thanh market: Ben Thanh Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ben Thanh market is possibly the most central and most visited market in Ho Chi Minh... it has been in the present location since 1899 and it is a large and crowded covered market... It's great to just walk around it and see what there is on sale... worms included (see photo). The market is very organized, and every part of it is dedicated to a specific product... fruits, clothes, fabric, meats... we did not buy anything, but we had a delicious meal, there. Because it's possible to eat, too...

Ben Thanh market: Colonial in nature, Rich in History
  • Tip Rating:
  • This French inspired building houses many shops that offer items from local handicrafts and art pieces to clothing and food stuff. This was also the first time I spotted a gleaming new Merc on the roads of HCMC. Things have really changed. Anyway, back to Ben Thanh Market, always throw in a bargain for the things that you want. Sometimes as much as 50%. But i'll usually end up paying about 70% of their quoted price. The bargains offered were so-so but the sweltering heat sure brought upon unceasing amount of perspiration. So other than bringing enough VND, remember to dress down to your sports gear and bring along your fluid (i.e. Mineral water).

Ben Thanh market: Best place to finish the sovenir shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a place where you can easily kill several good hours. Do not settle with the first stall you see, always try to shop around as they all sell similar stuff. I think one of the postings here provides a very good bargaining technique. I am not very good at it but if you can follow closely with that the posting says and be a bit more aggressive, you can definitely get more than what you want. I must write a bit about the delicious food found in Ben Thanh Market. The center of the market is booths of food stall that provide different kind of VN yummiesss. Some of them have pictures on menu which makes ordering 10x easier. People who operate the food stall are friendly and the stalls were more hygienic than we would have thought. Watch out for people who randonly offer you fans. Watch out for taxi waiting outside of the market. See my Taxi Trap posting on it. Market closes at 6pm, but things will be opened outside the market afterwards. I didn't get the chance to check it out but if you have the time -- please do so!
