Here you can buy almost everything... The city has several large indoor markets that sell everyday goods. In District 1 is Ben Thanh Market, which was first built in 1914 and known to the French as Halles Centrales. It covers 11,000 square meters and inside is a crowded maze of stalls selling an enormous variety of goods including an large selection of fabrics, clothes, shoes, bags, chopsticks, ceramics, meat, seafood, produce, flowers, plastics, hats, embroidered linens, lacquer, baskets, cosmetics, kitchen appliances, souvenirs and much more. There is also a section of food vendors who sell favorite local fare and drinks to exhausted shoppers. If it isn't sold inside this market, it is probably sold within 500 meters of it as the whole surrounding area is a major shopping district. Leave a Comment Directions: Ben Thanh Market is located at the intersections of Le Loi, Le Lai, Ham Nghi and Tran Hung Dao streets.

I don't think there's anything you can't buy at these markets! I'm sure if you were in the market for a car one of the stall-owners would be able to find one! There is some rough arrangement of goods; one part of the market has stalls selling food, others have clothes, souvenirs, kitchenwares, and all sorts of odds and ends. It's a good place to come if you want a cheesy souvenir t-shirt, and you can test your bargaining skills while you're at it. The markets are quite cramped in some parts. Just a narrow gap between stalls, with people yelling "you buy, you buy!" as you squeeze past. To be honest, it's not the sort of place I enjoy very much (I'm not into being cramped and hasseled!) but it's worth having a look. I'd recommend moving beyond the cheap clothing and souvenir stalls and working your way into the food area. I found you didn't get hasseled as much here - tourists probably don't buy a lot of this stuff! You can see and smell all sorts of interesting things, from exotic fruits to lollies to dried fish hanging on clothes lines! **Picture coming when I work out how to connect my camera to my computer...** Leave a Comment Address: District 1Directions: Facing onto the roundabout where Le Loi and Le Lai (amongst other major streets) intersect.

 | | | | Ben Thanh market: Huge Market, Quality Goods | | | | | |
This market is an easy walk being 700 metres from the city centre and the Rex Hotel. As we were staying at the Rex we visited this market several times, both early morning (10am) and late afternoon when it is very crowded. The walk along Le Loi street south to the market takes you past many shops and street vendors selling much of what you will find in the market. It is your chance to check the quality and price before you reach the market. At the market there are hundreds of stalls selling designed label clothing, bags, beads, shoes, jewellry, cosmetics, crafts, lacquer ware etc, all at very low prices. Do not accept the first offer price, bargain hard but remember the exchange rate is over 18,000 Dong to the US $ and 1,000 Dong is approximately 5 cents. Be reasonable with your offer. There is a large food market which we walked through but did not eat here. It all looked good and most likely was safe to eat. The market was constructed by the French in 1914 and has a stylish clock tower. Leave a Comment Address: Cnr Le Loi & Ham Nghi StreetsDirections: Where the large roundabout is.
