by screamcheese Got to buy really cool stuff in here. So many souvenir items and cute bags too!! Everywhere you go here, you'd see lacquers and wooden sandals. They close at around 5-6pm but they have stalls outside the market for those who want to go shopping at night.

Ben Thanh Market by xiquinho Here you can buy almost everything... The city has several large indoor markets that sell everyday goods. In District 1 is Ben Thanh Market, which was first built in 1914 and known to the French as Halles Centrales. It covers 11,000 square meters and inside is a crowded maze of stalls selling an enormous variety of goods including an large selection of fabrics, clothes, shoes, bags, chopsticks, ceramics, meat, seafood, produce, flowers, plastics, hats, embroidered linens, lacquer, baskets, cosmetics, kitchen appliances, souvenirs and much more. There is also a section of food vendors who sell favorite local fare and drinks to exhausted shoppers. If it isn't sold inside this market, it is probably sold within 500 meters of it as the whole surrounding area is a major shopping district. Leave a Comment Directions: Ben Thanh Market is located at the intersections of Le Loi, Le Lai, Ham Nghi and Tran Hung Dao streets.

by mnhaus Near the center of town is the Ben Thanh market, a medium size collection of shops selling anything from watches to live chickens to snake wine. It's a captivating place to stroll through, perhaps to pick up some fresh fruit or grab a small bite to eat. Prices are a little inflated here compared to some of the other markets in town. Ben Thanh Market by Blatherwick The tower of this market has served as one of the symbols of Saigon since 1914. Everything that your typical Saigonese person uses, wears, or eats can be found in this place. "Come on down! If you want it, we've got it!" Stalls nearby sell inexpensive food. In the centre of the traffic roundabout is a statue of Tran Nguyen Hai, the first person in Vietnam to use carrier pigeons. Why he's on a horse I don't have a clue. There is also a small bust of Quach Thi Trang who was killed during antigovernment protests in 1963. Built in 1914, Ben Thanh Market holds loads of stalls with delicious very cheap local fare during the day. As Lonely Planet says "everything that's commonly eaten, worn or used by the Siagonese is available here: vegetables, meats, spices, sweets, tobacco, clothing, household items, hardware and so forth". Lots of souvenirs. Address: Cnr DL Le Loi, DL Ham Nghi & DL Tran Hung Dao

Famous for not only its shopping for cheap/fake stuffs, there is also a selection of good and affordable foods offered inside the market. If you are looking for some souvenirs then this place is a good place to stop and stock before you leave. Be prepared to bargain yet again.
