Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: Cu chi tunnels (2)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Western proportioned tunnels have been constructed for tourists to see what it was like and there is a small section that you can crawl through. The tunnels were very claustrophobic and extremely hot and airless.

Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: the Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tunnels give you an unbeleivable perspective of what conditions the people of Vietnam (as well as Americans) faced during the war. It is amazing to be able to climb through the very same passageways that were used to fight our soldiers (if you're American that is). You'll leave with an appreciation of what both sides experienced during that long conflict. One of the most fascinating things about the tour is that before being led through the tunnels (normally by a soldier who fought during the war), you are given a screening of an anti-US propaganda video on the tunnels. It is a very interesting experience to say the least.

Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located about a 1.5-hour drive inland from Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels offer a unique and sombre experience. The drive out to the tunnels gives you a glimpse rural life in today’s Vietnam. The busy roadway gets crowded with bicycles, motorbikes, heavily laden trucks and buses plus the occasional oxcart. Some houses en-route show the making of rice paper. CU CHI WELCOME AREA Upon arrival try and join a tour and begin with an orientation of the site, viewing a model that shows the tunnels’ layout. The welcome area includes toilet facilities and a few shops selling souvenir items and soft drinks. THE TUNNELS The ranger will show you through the forest to one of the tunnel entrances and discover this fascinating underground complex of the Viet Cong. Work on the tunnels began in 1948. Eventually, they extended 120 miles and were used for storage, refuge, sleeping quarters, hospitals and schools. Rooms on the first level have been opened to allow visitors to share this unique experience. Entering is via narrow openings and fairly deep steps. Some of the walkways require transiting in a stooped position.

  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a guide at the Cu Chi tunnels, showing the entrance to the tunnel. It is 23cm wide and 35cm long! In the Cu Chi district alone, there were around 248km of tunnels! After ground operations against the tunnels claimed numerous US casualties and proved ineffective, the Americans turned the bombers and artillery on the area, turning it to a moonscape.

  • Tip Rating:
  • This is inside one of the Cu Chi tunnels, made bigger to fit tourists, like me. It was hot & humid, not really pleasant. It's incredible to think that they spent weeks at the time underground. These tunnels were made in 3 floors,so if the Americans bombed or found the first floor, the Vietcongs were still safe further below.

Out of Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels: At the Edge of Ho Chi Minh Trail!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just 65km (40 miles) northwest of Saigon, the Cu Chi area lies at the end of the Ho Chi Minh trail and was the base from which Ho Chi Minh guerillas used to attack Saigon. As a result the whole area became a "free fire zone" and was carpet-bombed in one of many American "scorched-earth" policies since It is part of the "Iron Triangle". But the residents of Cu Chi took their war underground, literally, developing a network of tunnels that, at its height, stretched as far as Cambodia and included meeting rooms, kitchens, and triage areas -- an effective network for waging guerilla warfare on nearby U.S. troops. The U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division was just next door, and there are detailed maps denoting land that was either U.S.-held, Vietcong-held, or in dispute. Visitors first watch a war-era propaganda film that's so over-the-top it's fun. The sight supports a small museum of photos and artifacts, as well as an extensive outdoor exhibit of guerilla snares and reconstructions of the original tunnels and bunkers. Wear your "play clothes" if you choose to get down in the temples; the experience is dirty and claustrophobic. There is also a shooting range where, for $1 per bullet, you can try your hand at firing anything from a shotgun to an AK-47. At the end of the tour, visit the dining hall and try the steamed tapioca that was a Cu Chi staple. Souvenir hawkers abound.
