Now if you've been around VT long enough, you'll know that Sinh Cafe is enormously popular with all of us and the rest of backpacker's world. Spurred by the success, a host of copy cats sprung up like mushrooms after a rain. Yes, you can see lots of fake Sinh Cafes in the backpacker's street.. Hmm, guess the term " Intellectual Property Rights" is still new to VN? To go to the real Sinh Cafe, go to the junction at Pham Ngu Lao Street and De Tham Street, walk downwards after you've by passed Kim's Cafe. Sinh is just a couple of shops away , on the very same row of shophouses. Their "official" website is @ http://www.sinhcafevn.com

Buy a baguette and make a quick exit if you're at the wrong place, haha.

Saigon River Cruise: Smelly Saigon River Cruise from Dist 1 to Cholon

From your hotel, you look out of the window, and if you're lucky, you'll see Saigon River and small chugging boats going upstream and downstream. Sometimes you'll see small, floating families of green water hyacinths, moving downstream. Hm, sounds like a good idea to take a river cruise and see Vietnam at the same time right? Not!!! You'll have to put up with the strong smell of rotting fish, ammonia, sight of clogged up rubbish on the riverbanks, etc. I was fortunate enough to skip this ordeal, all because I had an early flight to catch! Not so for my hubby's ....french colleague. Now if you're wondering why I keep mentioning him, I have to tell you that this french chappie had the worst case of traveller's luck. Every one or two things that he recommended out of his French Lonely Planet seemed to suck big time. And yes, if you have to know, yes, his french jaw dropped again, when he saw rats by the river bank, dead and floating merrily on the water... It dropped even further later when the boatman extorted USD10 from him for the river cruise... To read more on this unfortunate French chappie, click on b'packer's hcmc page to find out more

For goodness sake, you don't have to take a cruise from District one to Cholon, you can take a nice smelling cab.

If you're really dying for a cruise, skip Saigon River and go for a paddle boat experience in Mekong Delta. Not only are the waters there cleaner, the atmosphere is very, very rustic. Best of all, the whole day trip, with lunch, would cost only a paltry $12 or less. Make your booking with Mekong Delta Adventures or Sinh Cafe.

Saigon River Cruise: Don't do the Saigon River - Do the Mekong
  • Tip Rating:
  • What happens when you have 7 million people in a city? They produce garbage. And where does that garbage go in most third world countries. That's right. In the river. So if you want to shell out $10 or more to float around in smelly and garbage ridden water go ahead.

Take some pictures of life on the other side of the river. I got a couple of really good ones.

Go on one of the Mekong River tours where the water is cleaner and the prices are cheaper.

    Over-pricing: Airport taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you leave the airport an official-looking guy will wave you to a blue taxi on the left (last time I went there was a line of these guys, from the airport door to the taxi rank, so everyone goes that way, of course). That will cost you US$9, at least. Instead, turn right for a few steps and cross over to the yellow cabs - US$4. That's the standard charge from the airport to downtown.

Well, HCMC is truly a shopping paradise on Earth. I never know that HCMC is such a wonderful shopping paradise till I am there! The wide roads are line with many attractive shops and boutiques filled with colourful ware. However, for the same amount listed on the price tag, I can buy the same item at 1/2 the price at the nearby Ben Thahn market.

Perhaps, visit the Ben Thahn market and check out the prices before deciding whether you want to "burn" your money at one of these stalls!!! *wink*

    Vietnamese Traditional Massage Institute
  • Tip Rating:
  • Run by the Ho Chi Minh Association for the Blind, this is a place to go for no-nonsense, no-hanky panky massage. Situated at the Pham Ngu Lao area, there are separate wings for ladies and guys. Rates go for 35000dongs an hour and an extra 25000dongs if you throw in a sauna. The sauna seems to be very popular with the locals, as I keep bumping into guys in towels in the washroom, waiting for their turn in the sauna. The rooms looked like a 3rd world hospital, although they are air-conned and clean. I had a blind lady massaged me and despite the hoopla that everybody is telling me.."it's good"...my experience was anything but that. She was more intent on scratching my back instead, with hardly any strength and she was almost just concentrating on one spot on my back. She could not speak English so it was difficult for me to instruct her. At the end of it all, I felt that it was just money wasted.

Other folks seemed to have better experiences, especially the ladies. Maybe the service at the ladies' wing was better or I am just unlucky. Try your luck!

    Over-pricing: Conned by Cabbie
  • Tip Rating:
  • We got into a cab after we left the airport, and started haggling with the cabbie about the cab fare. In the end, we agreed to pay USD7 (we had not changed our money into the Vietnamese Dong yet, we only had USD with us then). Just before we reached our hotel, the cabbie stopped and insisted that we pay him the fare. We sensed that something was amiss, but paid up anyway. Satisfied, he then drove us to the hotel. We soon realised that we were over-charged...the amount is no big deal, really, but it really sucks to have been cheated on the first day..just after arrival...If we had paid the original amount he wanted, we would feel worse! Always insist on travelling in a metered taxi, and get the cabbie to switch on the meter! Most cabbies in HCMC are ok, but some of them would try to over-charge tourists at the airport.

    The money-thing: Cao Tai
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cao Tai is just too far away from HCM city. If you're taking the one day CAO TAI and Cu Chi Tunnel, I would suggest you to concentrate on the Cu Chi Tunnel. You can simply skip the Cao Tai temple. The road condition isn't very good and it takes almost half a day . THE TIME YOU SPEND IN CAO TAI TEMPLE IS VERY LIMITED, 1HOUR IF I'M NOT WRONG, So, NOT worth the energy and time.

    The money-thing: Con-artist....
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are an expat in Saigon (HCMC), you are a walking and breathing dollar sign *$$Kaa Ching$$*. Especially when you are in nightclubs, Bars, or whatever that is in business to cater to the expat desire. You'll meet some truly friendly locals (Guys and girls), but when they get too friendly too quick...Keep an eye on your cash and anything you have that is valuable. Besides that you should enjoy yourself. This shouldn't stop you from visiting Saigon (HCMC) though. Every part of the world have these type of con-artist scheming around for your goods.

    Over-pricing: Same Product Different Pricing
  • Tip Rating:
  • We wanted to buy a handbag on Friday/Saturday at Ben Thanh Market and we were quoted US10 after much haggling (the inital price was US$15). We decided not to buy. Then when we went on Sunday afternoon - we were pleasantly surprise that the vendor agreed to sell the same handbag for US$7. That was a marked difference.

I cannot assume that this is widespread at Ben Thanh Market but looks like the vendors would not budge on the prces if it is Friday/Saturday as there will be so many tourist who would be willing to pay the price quoted as they would be leaving by Sunday. So be wise and shop on Weekdays.... when there is slim pickings for the vendors

    Visit Andong Market
