Taxis: Affordable, Reliable, And Comfortable

  • There are more taxicabs in Saigon than one can shake a stick at. Unless it is raining, there are plenty of cabs running around on the streets waiting to be hailed. However, the locals do not hail taxis from the street unless they do not have a cell phone at hand (and how often does that happen in Saigon?) The best way to get a taxi is ordering one from the companies of your choice. Our top choice is the blue and white Vinasun; our second choice is the yellow Vina Taxi, and our third choice? There is no third choice. Although there are over a dozen taxi companies in the city, my friends and relatives refuse to use anyone but the two afore mentioned companies. The reasons we prefer Vinasun and Vina Taxi over other companies are: 1- Vina Taxi (Tel: 8 11 11 11) is the very first taxi company in Saigon. It is owned by a Taiwanese company whose reputation of good service is sterling from day one. 2- Vinasun (Tel: 8 27 27 27) has the newest, cleanest, most quiet and comfortable cabs around. 3- Both companies have the most courteous drivers and the newest cars, the A/Cs work well and the dispatch time is quick. 4- Both companies’ cabs are suitable for four, five, and seven passengers, making it very convenient in all situations. Legitimate and licensed taxicabs are not a rare breed in Saigon, but you need to know how to distinguish them from the "taxi dù" or "taxi ma" if you are going to hail them from the streets. Look for the company's name on the side door, back door, seat covers, and dashboard. Look for the large meter installed at eye level above the dashboard. Look for the uniform-clad drivers. The meter in a legitimate cab always starts at VND 12,000 (US$0.75) for a four-passenger car and VND 15,000 for the larger vehicle. The increment is VND 3,000 for each km thereafter.

    Cars and Drivers: Private Driver
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many options available for travelling from Saigon to other parts of the country, but for a small group, a private driver is the best of them all. The cars being used for this option are mostly small vans. There is no need to hire a smaller car even if you don't need all the space since the rate is the same whether there are 4 passengers or 15. We hired a 15-passenger car for our group of nine people and paid VND 1M2 (US$75) for a two-day-and-one-night trip from Saigon to Vũng Tàu. The cost includes tolls, fuel, and parking; the drive is comfortable since the car is a newer model Mercedes. For the entire journey no matter the length, the car and driver are at your disposal, thus making it very convenient for people who do not want to deal with local transportation at the destination. The information below is direct contact number to Nguyễn Quốc Vũ, the driver we used, and whom I highly recommend. He drove very courteous, never used the horn, and his knowledge of the local history is impressive. After learning about my love of boats and fishing villages, Vũ made a few detours along the way to make sure I can shoot all the pictures that my heart desires. Vũ even tracked down a restaurant which one member of our group yearned to find but could recall neither the name nor the location. Since drivers only received a monthly salary of VND 800,000 (US$50) plus 10% of the fare, tips from passengers are the mainstay of their income. Note: There is no need to accept any restaurant or hotel recommended by drivers. The only reason drivers recommend certain establishments being their compensation received from those businesses. In driver-recommended hotels, the drivers stay free in very basic rooms sharing with other drivers. In driver-recommended restaurants, the drivers receive very simple meals without charge. If you desire to patron other establishments that do not give compensation to drivers, you should consider contributing to their needs for food and lodging.

Miscellaneous: Nitty Gritties at Tan Son Nhat Airport

  • Prepare your documents before touching down! - Ho Chi Minh City

In case you're wondering, Tan Son Nhat Airport is not too far from HCMC. It cost about USD5 by taxi to get to town . Upon arrival, you'll also be given these things: 1)Arrival/departure card - white/blue duplicate form (complete this on the plane, the immigration officer will take the white copy and return the stamped blue copy to you) - when you check into hotels they will want to see the blue form. 2)Baggage declaration - white/yellow duplicate form (complete this on the plane and hand to the custom's officers who will stamp it and return the yellow copy to you). If you are bringing any CDs or video tapes you must declare them and may have to hand them over for 3 - 4 days "cultural approval" 3)Visa application - you should already have a copy of your visa application form (white A4 size with your photo on the top right hand corner). If for some reason the travel agent has not returned this to you, take another copy from the airline staff and complete it. Hand the form to the immigration officer with the photo attached, who will keep it and stamp your passport. Note that the visa application is only needed if this is your first visit on a new visa. For subsequent arrivals on the same visa, you do not need to complete the application form. 4)Health declaration - yellow form. You may not receive this as it is not given out consistently. Fill it in and have it in your hand as you enter the immigration hall. If someone asks for it, hand it over. However, they rarely ask for it and while you are rummaging around for it, everyone else is rushing ahead for the immigration queues.

    Miscellaneous: Departure Tax
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unless you're planning to stay here forever, prepare 12USD to get out of HCMC. Yes, they will also accept the local currency (dong) if you run out of those greenbacks. It makes sense to count all those dongs before you make your way to the customs, espcially if you're dong-challenged like me. An angry queue of people were behind me as I dug up those dongs. Thank God they were cursing in a foreign tongue.

    Motorcycle: Motorbikes
  • Tip Rating:
  • They may seem dangerous.... Yet it's the most efficient, easiest way to get around the city. Cars are ridiculously expensive in Vietnam, and that's one reason why almost everyone drives on bikes. Traffic would be horrible without motorbike use. If you're uncomfortable driving one on your own, you can also hire drivers or hitch rides. Live a little, and jump on the back of one.

    Miscellaneous: Happy Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the Pha Ngu Lao area you will find hundreds of backpackers travel agencies offering hop on- hop off buses for other cities, local tours to Mekong Delta, CuChi Tunnels? I guess at the end they are all the same, but the one I tried was this ?Happy Tours? (139 Bui Vien St, near the Post Office. Tel: 848 8379567). They are open till late, and offer a free breakfast for every tour you buy. They also have a minib?s hop on-off that goes all the way along the coast up to Hanoi for 20 USD.

Undoubtely the best way to move around the city. There are, in fact, little cars in Saigon, but the motorbikes are enough to make huge traffic jams in a noisy atmosphere. You don?t have to rent one to experience this way of transport: many locals will offer you a ride in their own bikes as you walk by the city. They are not oficial taxis or so, just people who want to eran some extra money.Bargain first, and don?t pay more than 1 USD for any ride!

    Ship/Boat: Mekong canoes
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you take one of tose Mekong Delta tours you will be taken through the narrow channels among the little islands of the Delta. The wooden boats are strait, with room for 5 people in a row. The shores are all lined up with water palm trees that grow in the water. The foliage is so thick that it made a perfect hideway for the Vietcong to hide when the USA planes appeared looking for targets. You will be offered a traditional triangular hat as you enter the boat, but don?t feel obblied to wear it?

    Open Tour Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Backpacking & travel from Saigon to Hanoi & vice versa is so convenient with Open Bus Tickets. These buses are mostly operated (should i say monopolized) by some big cafes & travel companies with extensive coverage in all touristy cities/towns. The advantage of Open Bus ticket is you're not bound by specific schedule & you can stay in a town or city as long as you want & confirming your next destination one day before you departure. Open Bus ticket valid for 1 year from the date of purchase.
