Taxis: From Airport to Downtown District 1
For simplicity just purchase a taxi ticket the moment you get passed the custom. I paid 160,000 Dong or US$10 from airport to District 1. They will try to offer you a bigger car which cost US$20, just insists on getting the cheaper fare.

Taxis: Taxi Fare from Airport to Backpacker Area (Jan 07)
I did a search before i go Ho Chi Minh City. Base on tips from the internet, reasonable taxi fare to town area from Airport is US$5 or it can bo as low as US$4.

There are many cabs waiting outside the airport. First, I tried to look for a cab that uses meter (the taxi always shows "Metered Taxi"). After i spent 10 mins looking for a cab that really use meter, i can't find any. They offer me fixed price, which is US$10 or US$8. There was one taxi driver said he would follow meter and asked us to get into hir car, i doubted and reconfirmed before i put my luggage inside. Again, he said he won't follow meter. So dissappointed. I rejected him immediately.

We give up. Finally, we took another cab by paying US$6 (to Pham Ngu Lao area, Bui Vein street).

Taxis: arriving at the airport -get Taxi
Look, when you exit the airport - ignore the guy trying to get you a taxi. This idiot told me "only ten dollars" to go to Q3. I laughed at him because I know its only 50,000vnd.

Just do like I do, walk past him and all those guys get your own taxi. Talk only with the driver. Try to get vinasun, mai linh, or savico, vinataxi. Even to go to tourist district in Q1 should be less than 100,000 with tip, which is what - six bucks?

Motorcycle: Faster and cheaper from airport to HCM City
I flew alone from Hue to Ho Chi Minh city one evening and since it was my first visit, I felt rather worried about my safety (a lone female) and the cost of taking a taxi. After standing for some minutes while taxi drivers kept on offering their expensive services to me, I decided to cross the road to the taxi stand directly opposite the domestic arrival hall. Motor bike drivers came up. One of them was a woman. Although I managed to bargain the price down to 60,000 Dong, I hesitated to go with the man driver. I used sign language to show him I was scared to go with him. Then the woman driver pointed to herself and I quickly agreed. Although the first driver tried to persuade me to go with him, I again showed him the sign for 'scared' and left with the woman driver. She could manipulate the bike easily despite carrying my big backpack (45 lit) in front. I had an interesting ride to the city and even better, travelled faster through the evening traffic and at a cheaper price. Since I often ride motor bikes in Malaysia, both as a driver and a passenger, I had no problem at all handling this ride.

Miscellaneous: I flew from Hanoi to Ho Chi...
I flew from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines domestic flight. It was very nice, secure and punctual flight. A quite many airline fly from Europe to Vietnam and also there is frequent service from Bangkok and Singapore.
Walk, hire a car (with a driver) or take a taxi or if your hotel has a complimentary shuttle bus use that.
