Nha Trang-Long Son Pagoda

by mad4travel

Long Son Pagoda is situated at the foot of Mount Trai Thuy, south-west of Nha Trang. It was first built on Mount Trai Thuy in 1886 and named the Dang Long Pagoda. In 1900, it was damaged in a storm and was rebuilt at the foot of the mountain. Among the interesting things to see is a naturally-lighted image of Buddha. There is also a 14m red brass statue of Buddha sitting on a lotus pedestal. This pagoda also commemorates the monks and nuns who died struggling against the Diem government's persecution of Buddhists in the South.

Nha Trang -Po Nagar Cham Towers

by mad4travel

2 km north of Nha Trang, Eight Po Nagar Cham Towers were built on Cu Lao Marble Hill, between the eighth and 13th centuries. The largest of the four remaining towers was built in honour of Po Nagar, also known as Lady Thien Y-ana or the Goddess Mother; she spent part of her life teaching weaving and agricultural techniques. The 22.5m tower contains her sandstone statue sitting cross-legged on Buddha's throne. The 2.6m statue has 10 hands, each holding a specific object illustrating the intellect and power of Buddha. The remaining towers were dedicated to different gods: the central tower to Cri Cambhu, the north-west tower to Sandhaka and the south tower to Ganeesh. Not only are the towers famous for their architecture and sculpture, but also for their great significance in terms of history, nationalism and archaeology. You also get great views of Nha Trang standing on the top of the hill.

Nha Trang

by mad4travel

Nha Trang is often called Vietnam's Mediterranean. It is sunny all year round, with an average temperature of 23oC . Annual rainfall is less than anywhere else in the country and the area is not threatened by serious storms as it is protected by the Truong Son Mountains and Ca Pass. Nha Trang has a lovely 7km long white beach and has a kind of feel of Cannes for some reason I can't put my finger on!.Off shore are a score of attractive islets which contain craggy caves and caverns and provide home to the swallow, an insectivore that flies hundreds of kilometres daily searching for food to create its saliva-made nests that go into the famous delicious swallow-nest soup. With such warm and clear water the year round and unspoiled environment, Nha Trang Bay is also an ideal site for scuba diving. There are many day boat trips you can do snorkel or just enjoy the scenery.

Hoi An 2

by mad4travel

Hoi An has well preserved communal houses, pagodas and other places of worship which reflect the presence and influences of the Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Westerners who later settled in the region. In Hoi An, cycling or walking through the ancient streets of moss-walled buildings that are still preserved nearly the same as those of the 16-17th century seaport gives you strange feeling of being in the past. Occupied by early western traders, Hoi An was one of the major trading centre of South-East Asia during the 16th century. The town has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tiled-roof houses and narrow streets; the original structure of some remain intact. All the houses are made of rare wood and decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Pillars are also carved with ornamental designs. Nearby are impressive ruins of the Sa Huynh and Champa...

Hoi An

by mad4travel

Hoi An is a charming little place about 30 km south of Danang. The town which dates back to the 15th century, used to be the biggest sea port in Vietnam and the most important trade center of the country during the 17th and 18th centuries. Merchant ships from many countries such as Holland, Britain, Japan, France, Portugal, China, Indonesia etc. used to anchor here to purchase silk, pottery, tea, pepper and lacquerware of Vietnam. Now, its a bit of a tourist hang out but not so tacky as to call it a tourist trap. It has a laid back charm with friendly people and interesting shops and cafes so its a nice place to rest up and take things easy

The Marble Mountains Da Nang

by mad4travel

The Marble Mountains, also called Ngu Hanh Son or Mountains of the Five Element, consist of five peaks : Thuy Son (water) which is the highest, Moc Son (wood), Kim Son (metal) , Tho Son (soil) and Hoa Son (fire).Huyen Khong Cave was a base for Vietnamese revolutionaries during times of war and has a hole in the top after suffering a direct hit. Inside is a shrine, its an interesting and haunting placeThe Mountains are also famous for traditional practices of stone engraving. In Dong Hai Village, close to Thuy Son, 600 families chisel statues. If you want a 20 foot buddha statue for your garden then this is the place to come!

Cham Museum Da Nang

by mad4travel

This is an interesting collection of exhibits that is worth a look. The Champa kingdom was founded in 192 AD, its culture is more reminiscent of india or cambodia than the heavily chinese influence of the rest of Vietnam. The collection comprises altars, statues and decorative features from Hindu and Buddhist temples and towers. The museum currently exhibits some 300 sandstone and terracotta sculptures, which are considered to be masterpieces of Champa art. The characteristic Champa legacy of brick temples and structures, dating from the 7th and 8th centuries to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was clearly influenced by early Hindu civilization. The collection comprises altars, statues and decorative works from Hindu and Buddhist temples and towers. Among the masterpieces from the first period is the Tra Kieu altar, dedicated to Siva. A warning- some of the scultures are a bit,...

The French Quarter

by melanieinkorea

Walking around the French Quarter of Hanoi was a nice contrast to where we were staying in the old Quarter. At the Cathedral there were thousands of students. I tried to get pictures of them in their school uniforms to show my students in South Korea. It didn't work, I just got a picture of the two South Koreans I was traveling with.

Mama somebody or other

by melanieinkorea

In Nha Trang, you'll have the option to take a tour with Mama somebody or other, (there's more than one). The trip is on a boat and includes lots of fun things to see and do, including snorkeling, a floating wine party a beach stopover, a fruit party, a show by the crew and one last island destination. It wiped me out! I fell asleep and didn't make it to the last stop. If you have a lot of energy and don't mind being ferried to a thousand different places in one day, take this trip. If you want to be in the water, go snorkeling with a dive company instead. It's a little more expensive, (10 bucks instead of 6,) but they'll cater the trip to you, rather than to you and thirty other travelers you don't know.

Brother Cafe, Hoi An

by muddybok

This is a great dining & drinking place if you are visiting Hoi An. Food & drinks here are a little bit pricy for budget traveler. When the day is getting dark, you will see some very beautiful reflection of light display from opposite hotels. Sometime, you will hear some boat passing through, but only to see a very small light on it.The best thing about this restaurant is they keep bull frogs (that actually make noise) in their small ponds in the very well landscaped garden. And your dining table is within that beautiful garden.
