Visit an Outdoor Food Market

by tampa_shawn

One of the best ways to really get the feel of Vietnam is to visit an outdoor market. Every town has one…in fact if you just go for a walk (in no direction in particular) you’ll stumble across one in no time. My favorite time to visit the markets is early morning when they are the busiest…but then again, during the heat of the day the markets are also pretty neat because the pace is slower and its fun to see all the vendors taking an afternoon nap on boxes in the middle of their brightly colored fruit. The markets in Vietnam are a sight to behold to the Western. Exotic fruits and vegetables are piled in neat little pyramid like piles everywhere…strange dried ingredients are lined up in jars and are hanging from the ceilings, live pigs, chickens, ducks, snakes, fishes and frogs are crammed into incredibly small pens, raw skinned meat of all kinds is displayed in the open (with the vendor...

Sit Back in a Cafe and Watch the Traffic

by tampa_shawn

On the Road Again…Vietnamese Ingenuity Vietnamese ingenuity shows itself at its finest when you look at the vehicles on the road…and the often heavy and amazingly awkward packages they haul in and out of totally insane traffic with apparent ease. I was totally astounded at what they carried on a small 200 cc motorbike. I was so dumbfounded at seeing the best ones that often failed to grab my camera. I did manage to capture some amazing pictures go to the link at the bottom of the page if you wish to see them. Some of the most interesting sites I saw were…+ A man who had about 60 LIVE ducks dangling from their feet from every conceivable place the ducks could be attached…the ducks quaking loudly the entire time + An entire family of 5 on one small motorbike+ A women caring a 3 foot high stack of egg crates in front of her, the egg crates were taller than she was so she was leaning sideways...

Hanoi Kids guide was super

by Marthamaire

I found out about the organization Hanoi Kids on the Internet. My day with Linh, which was December 26, 2010, was one of the best parts of my trip to Vietnam. Hanoi Kids is a group of University students who want to improve their English and learn about other countries by showing tourists around. It is completely free. They have suggested tours of Hanoi or you can do what I did and make up your own. All you are expected to do is to buy them lunch, pay for the taxi, if used, and pay for admission to any museum or other place with an entrance fee that you may visit. I made up my own tour and our first stop was the Women's Museum which Linh told me no one had ever asked her to take them there before. I was not feeling too well so we had lunch in my hotel. Linh was so sweet: she was concerned about the "high" prices but it was so inexpensive in Vietnam I told her to order whatever she wanted...

POST

by DAO

Vietnam must be one of the most Post friendly nations in the world. If you want to post off those postcards or letters home you will find it very easy to do. Virtually EVERY village has a Post Office and its open 365 days a year! Really. Even the meg-holiday of Tet. They are generally open from 6:30am to 9pm. The main post Office in Saigon (pictured) is open from 7am-8pm. The postal system is considered to be very reliable, but slow. Expect a few weeks for it to get there. Poste Restante is available in Saigon (HCMC) and Saigon. You have to pay a small fee for every letter. Large packages drive the local authorities nuts as you may have items on CD/DVD’s they don’t want you to have. Expect this to take time and be difficult. There are international courier companies operating in Hanoi and Saigon and a few larger cities.

Diving in Vietnam

by JJfromNJ

I have to comment on the diving in Vietnam (and specifically, Nha Trang). It's incredibly cheap (I think I paid $30 for 2 dives!) but it is really dull. The fishing industry runs rampant there, and they've fished almost every last thing out of the water. Still worth it if you're really in the mood to dive, but don't expect to see a lot.

Detian (Bayuen) Falls

by euskaldun

The Detian Falls are shared by China and Vietnam, and we thought they were spectacular. We visitee from the Chinese side, but I guess the Vietnamese side would be equally rewarding. At the time, we were told that crossing the border in that region is not recommended, but if the situation has changed and you make it there, the Guangxi Province of China has a lot of interesting places to visit.

Mui Ne activities..

by Durfun

You'll need more than half a day here. There are two dunes: white sand & red sand. The red ones are a lot further out! It's fun to do some sledding on the dunes. There are little kids who would surround you offering you their plastic boards for the sledding. As for the Cham tower - it's not wow. The one in Nha Trang is much better!!Hang around sunset & dawn to see the fisherman & kids hauling in the fish, by collectively pulling the nets from the beach.Essentially, Mui Ne is a sleepy fishing town!

Booking a Halong Bay boat

by Durfun

Hi, If you're going to Hanoi, I suggest you head into the many tour agencies. They compete for business & have ties with a variety of boats offering a range of comfort levels. There are indeed authentic looking sail boats too - in fact we went for one of those. And the cost for two adults was way less than 100 USD (in 2006). We only had one Spanish couple on board who had paid a lot more via the internet!! Everyone else had booked as we did, wandering into the agencies & asking to look at the boat photos.Good luck

LA VANG

by mtncorg

From Quang Tri - 13 km south from Dong Ha on Highway 1 and around 60 km north of Hue - a local road signposted for 'La Vang' takes off to the west on the south side of the Quang Tri River and leads west for some 4 km to the ruins of the La Vang Catholic Church. The church was and is an important pilgrimage site for Vietnamese Catholics. Here, in 1798, persecuted Catholics had fled into the forest only to become ill. In answer to their prayers the Virgin Mary appeared to them and showed them herbs which they could boil up to become well again. A church was built on the site eventually but it was destroyed last in the heavy fighting here in 1972, though the statue of Mary and baby Jesus remained untouched. A chapel of sorts has been rebuilt linking up with the old church tower. A large monument on the south side of the church represents the original apparition. To the north is a new large...
