Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu CHi Tunnels are about an hour outside of Ho Chi Minh City and are really interesting to anyone that is interested in the war, plus you can shoot a nubmer of different guns at their shooting range. If you do go to the range bring ear plus unless you want your ears ringing for a while.

Hoi An - Cooking lessons

by cafank

If you love Vietnamese food and want to learn how to make it in a few hours, look for local signs on cafes/restaurants advertising cooking lessons. You can do orgainsed lessons where you go to a restaurant, cook a meal and then eat it but it was more fun finding your own restaurant and asking if they will teach you to cook Vietnamese style. Check with your accomodation for available "schools".Don't go the the 5 star places - they will be too expensive and probably too busy but many of the 1 - 2 star places outside of the old town (suburbs) were happy to teach us for a minimal fee. Sometimes the language barrier was up but noses came good....great fun and we learned to cook what we wanted...not justy spring rolls. It was fun trying to find a place but even more fun when we got around to cooking.....

HCMC Ben Duoc Tunnel & Temple

by cafank

Not far from Cu Chi Tunnels is another part of the complex Ben Duoc TunnelI enjoyed my visit here more than Cu Chi Maybe because the exhibits were a bit better. The Ben Duioc Temple was a delight. Relatively new, built about 1993 it ihas a huge nine storey tower, quite impressive out here in the countryside.Inside the main hall there is a stone with about 50,000 names on it - Vietnamese who fought and died in this areas. It is sobering - so many people in this area (saigon) dead. There are artifacts and models of the war in the underground room - seems a bit funny inside a temple....but this is Vietnam. You can do all three...if you do a tour you will be well organised and will probably not go to the temple...my second visit we caught local buses and taxied between tunnel areas - it was easy and still cheap.

HCMC Cu Chi Tunnel

by cafank

A much overrated experience...wouldn't go again.Having said that it was mildly interesting - but so many of the exhibits are contrived and look so false.Best (worst) thing about the tunnel experience was the video shown about the tunnels. A giant cobweb of 200 KM of tunnels and they are so small....it would have been horrific fighting a war in these tunnels. You can go into a tunnel and go along a passage - I made it to the first hole and couldn't wait to get out - I'm not usuall claustrophobic but this was horrible!Take a tour or you can do it by bus but it will take a while. However, the area around the tunnels is pretty and some interesting villages...maybe make a day of it before crossing into Cambodia (not too far away)

HCMC - HCMC Fine Arts Museum

by cafank

I found this museum wandering around District 1. A tiny notice said it was a museum so in I went. What a fantastic place - the most beautiful artifacts and china and glass and pottery and paintings, some going back to the 7th 8 th century, and of course some later stuff; BUT it was just sitting on shelves and in alcoves where you could actually touch some of the exhibits...so scary that the most wonderful treaures were so openly placed to view. There is certainly a degree of propaganda paintings of people marching and carrying guns etc but the wonderful stained glass and peeling ocher walls, sun-bleached curtains, musty corridors, make up the charm of the place. I'm sure in a Western country we have nothing like this museum....I spent several hours here and would happily go back and see it all again. The building itself is a treasure being of French Colonial Architecture (restored after...

Ho Chi Minh City Museum

by cafank

Located in District 1 this is a great museum in a lovely building originally built in 1885. Originally built as a museum it later became the Governor's Place and then after the Revolution it was the residence of the French High Commissioner...then it was the Supreme Court...then back to a museum as the "Revolution Museum" and now HCMC Museum. The building is as good as the displays which range from revolutionary struggles to Vietnam history and development to the economy and culture and ethnic groups. You can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day here.

Hoi An District: My Son World Heritage Site

by cafank

My Son (Mee Sun) is a great place to visit. We travelled by motor bike but you can do tours or hire a car - it's about an hour from Hoi An itself. A friend went out for sunrise and said it was magical...so maybe that it something to look at.The relics are nothing like Siem Reap so don't have great expectations of a large area and many falling down builings. They are from mostly Hindu temples-towers from between the 4th and 13th century and they are a symbol of the Champa people, their art and building. I could easily have spent a much longer time there but it rained, and rained, and rained - in the end the mud got to me!It is a World Heritage Centre and is being carefuly redeveloped into a tourist area.Would I go again - yes, hopefully on a dry day!

Hoi An - The Old Town

by cafank

After 7 days (two trips) I am still captivated by Hoi An and The Old Town of Hoi An is a facinating insight into what Hoi An was like in the 16th and 17th centuries. Although there are some tacky replicas in places in general the village is wonderful. Entry to all historical sites in Hoi An is via a coupon system, where 75,000 dong gets you a ticket that can be used to enter five attractions: one museum, one old house, one assembly hall, the handicraft workshop (and traditional music show) or the traditional theater, and either the Japanese Covered Bridge or the Quan Cong Temple. My highlights are:The Japanese Covered Bridge, constructed in the early 1600's by the Japanese community, and renovated in 1986. Museum of Folk Culture, 33 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street; the museum documents the dress and culture of rural Vietnam. Hoi An Museum of History and Culture, 7 Nguyen Hue Street. There are old...

Ha Long Bay Tour

by cafank

I didn't know what to expect but loved the Ha Long Bay tour and stay on Cat Ba Island...the next time I did the same tour but stayed on board the junk overnight and had a wonderful time watching the tide ebb and flow and create magic images of the islands. Which one would I do again - I'd combine both and stay a night aboard a junk then head to Cat Ba for a stay there.Once on board the junk we meanderd around the bay, passed islands and rocky outcrops, water and fishing villages and stopped to visit Sung Soi Cave. The food was great, lots of alcohol if you wanted it.We also stopped at Tam Cung Grotto and out came the canoes so that we could paddle around the grotto and caves...a wonderful time on crystal clear waters. The young travellers loved diving and jumping off the junk but the wasn't for me.

hai phong - cat ba

by hanspeter_W.

Hai Phong is northern Vietnam's main port, and an important industrial and commercial center. 105km from Hanoi, Hai Phong is a beautiful city with much of the central colonial quarter still preserved. Many streets are bordered by flame flower trees, giving the city its other name "city of flame flowers". Hai Phong is also a good base for exploring other areas in the northeast such as Cat Ba and Halong bay.In Hai Phong itself, the Du Hang temple, Hang Kenh communal house and the old quarter are worth visiting. Nearby Do Son beach is northern Vietnam's most popular seaside retreat. It even boasts a casino!
