halong bay

by hanspeter_W.

Halong Bay is one of the world’s natural wonders, and is the most beautiful tourist destination of Vietnam. Halong Bay features more than one thousand awesome limestone karsts and islands of various sizes and shapes along the 120-km coastline of Bai Chay Beach. Its waters are host to a great diversity of ecosystems including offshore coral reefs, freshwater swamp forests, mangrove forests, small freshwater lakes, and sandy beaches. The folk tale has it that the dragons descended from heaven to help locals by spitting jewels and jade to the sea, forming a natural fortress against invaders; these precious stones are represented by the lush green outcrops. Several islands boast beautiful grottos and caves with contiguous chambers, hidden ponds and peculiar stone formations.Halong Bay is about 170 kilometers northeast of Hanoi and 3,5 hours by road. Looking to see Halong Bay Photos or Find...

hanoi capital of vietnam

by hanspeter_W.

In the fall of 1010, King Ly Thai To (Ly Cong Uan) moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La. On the way, the king saw a vision of a golden dragon ascending from the Red river ( song Hong). The King decided to change Dai La to Thang Long (Ascending Dragon). Thang Long remained the capital city until the end of the Tran dynasty when in 1397, the capital city was moved to Thanh Hoa -Tay Do (Western Capital) and Thang Long became Dong Do (Eastern Capital). Vietnam was invaded by China in 1407, and the city was renamed Dong Quan. In 1428, after ten years of fighting, Le Loi liberated Vietnam and renamed the city Dong Kinh. In 1527, the city was renamed Thang Long. In 1802 when King Gia Long (Nguyen Dynasty) moved the capital city to Hue, the name Thang Long remained but, Long no longer means dragon, Long in this case means prosperity. Ha Noi, was the name given to the city by King Minh Mang in...

hue city -world heritage

by hanspeter_W.

Unlike Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and most other Vietnamese cities, HUÉ somehow seems to have stood aside from the current economic frenzy and, despite its calamitous history, has retained a unique cultural identity. It's a small, peaceful city, full of lakes, canals and lush vegetation and some magnificent historical sights – including the nineteenth-century walled citadel, the remnants of its once-magnificent Imperial City and seven palatial Royal Mausoleums. With all this to offer, Hué is inevitably one of Vietnam's pre-eminent tourist destinations. It's also the main jumping-off point for day-tours of the DMZ, as well as a springboard for buses to Savannakhet and Laos, via the Lao Bao border. In 1802, Emperor Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen dynasty, moved the capital from Hanoi and built his Imperial City in Hué. From then on, the Nguyen dynasty ruled Vietnam from Hué until the abdication of...

take the hai van pass from danang to hue

by hanspeter_W.

According to more than one guidebook, the drive from Danang to Hue is the most scenic in all of Vietnam. I've no reason to argue with that. Soon after leaving the town, you start climbing steeply upwards and are soon rewarded with a panoramic view of the bowl-shaped bay of Danang. Oh, and lest you think that's a great looking vacation spot at the bottom of the picture, you should know its a leper colony.Pillboxes at the crest of Hai Van pass After climbing through several hair-pin curves for close to an hour, you reach the crest of the Hai Van Pass. Here, if the weather affords it (which it often doesn't. Hai Van means "Sea Clouds"), there are views to both the North and the South. The pass forms an obvious boundary between North and South Vietnam, and if proof were needed, you need look no further than the fortifications built by the French and then later used by the South Vietnamese...

danang city - beach city in center of vietnam

by hanspeter_W.

Central Vietnam's dominant port and its fourth largest city, Da Nang harbours few sights beyond the exceptional Cham Museum, but is an unexpectedly amiable place and a major transport hub with air connections as well as road and rail links. In the American War it served as a massive South Vietnamese airbase and played host to thousands of US troops as well as refugees searching for work. But walking around today, it's the earlier, French presence which is more apparent in the leafy boulevards and colonial-style houses. Note that at the time of writing, Da Nang was in the process of changing its street … more »

ho chi minh city - biggest city of vietnam

by hanspeter_W.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) (Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh pronunciation (help·info) ) is the largest city in Vietnam. It was known as Prey Nokor (Khmer: ) before being annexed by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. Under the name Saigon (Vietnamese: Sài Gòn; pronunciation (help·info)), it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later of the independent state of South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. In 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding province of Gia Định and was officially renamed Hồ Chí Minh City (although the name Sài Gòn - formally known as District 1 - is still commonly used.)[2]The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers (37 mi) from the South China Sea[3] and 1,760 kilometers (1,094 mi) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The metropolitan area, which consists of Hồ Chí Minh City metro area,...

1 week for Hanoi and surrounding areas

by seagypsy

I agree with Johnny, above. With only 1 week, I would focus only on Hanoi and surrounds. Save Hoi-An for another visit when you've got several weeks to travel the country.Might be rushed but you could break your itinerary down to a couple days for Hanoi book-ended, a visit to Halong Bay (2days/1 night trip) and a 3nights/2day trip to the northwest hilltribe area such as Sapa and/or Bac Ha. Those Halong and Sapa 'organized trips' are designed to be done back to back with no need to spend a night in Hanoi in between if you want. The trip from Halong arrives back in time for the night train to Lao Cai OR the night train from Lao Cai arrives back in Hanoi in time for the early morning departure for Halong. Yes, it's a packed week but loads of fun and adventure. Don't miss the Ethnology Museum in Hanoi.

Water Puppet Theatre

by piglet44

I was a bit wary of this one, since it sounded very touristy and I thought "hmmm puppets, big deal" but that was a mistake. The show was touristy but there were also many vietnamese there, adults and kids. The art form is an ancient traditional one, and the puppets were beautifully made. The theatre itself was a huge old building with an exhibition of various old puppets downstairs. The show was an hour long and started with some Vietnamese music. Then the puppets came on ,and I can honestly say that we spent a magical half hour. The scenes depict everyday moments from Traditional Vietnamese village life and the techniques used were astounding. It wasn't hard to follow the stories and recognize what was happening (the program in english tells you the subject of each story). At the end the Puppeteers stepped out from behind the bamboo curtain, waist deep in water, and were met with wild...

Swan down the Mekong

by piglet44

We took a trip down to the Mekong Delta from Saigon. This was the only trip we booked from home.We booked through Mrs Ha of Vietland Discovery and were happy with the service. The trip was a private one,2 days one night ,staying in the hotel I selected (Kim Tho in Can Tho) and cost us $263 for two people including private car and driver ,guide ,overnight in the hotel, and 2 lunches. It was very nice.At the last minute we added a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels and paid another $50 for that on the way back to Saigon. Our guide was called Tran Huu Van and he also runs Mountain Bike trips around Vietnam. The trip was great and we saw many different things ,including how various kinds of candies are made, and sunrise at the floating market of Cai Rang.
