visit to a Vietnamese house

by piglet44

When we were staying in Hoi An we ate in a restaurant called Hong Phuc next to the river. As we were tucking into our fish wrapped in a banana leaf the guy who worked there approached us and asked if we would like to visit his village. We thought he was just being friendly at first, but then understood this was a business proposition ie it would cost us. However being the curious types we decided to take him up on it.he said we could come to his village on bikes, motorbikes or by taxi. Next day at 9am he and his wife arrived at our hotel on motorbikes and took us to the village. There he showed us around the fishing village, explaining lots of stuff about village life. Then we saw how ceramics are made and even had a go ourselves. Next we went fishing (and caught nothing!)Finally he took us to his house where his wife made us lunch and we met his son. Then we were taken back to the hotel on...

Swim at Lang co beach

by piglet44

If you have hired a car (see previous tips) you can get your driver to stop at Lang Co beach for a quick swim. The water in July was deliciously warm ,the sand lovely just like in all the best shampoo ads. WE were amazed that we had the place almost to ourselves. There is a big seafood restaurant which has (not very clean) bathrooms where you can change. The beach chairs cost money so we just sat in the restaurant after our swim and had a quick watermelon juice. Heaven on earth!

Go over the Hai Van Pass

by piglet44

If you want to see a wonderful view of the Vietnam coastline between Hoi An and Hue you will have to hire a car, because the buses and trains now go through the tunnel instead of over the Pass.It is well worth going over the pass because you get to see the incredible view of the sea and the Lang co beach and also the remains of the French Fort on the top which was later used by the US Military.Avoid all the annoying locals trying to sell you stuff at the top by just telling them you came to see the view. (you can use their toilets for free though :-)

The Marble Mountains

by piglet44

From Hoi An to Hue we hired a car and driver because we wanted to stop off and see 3 places on the way,and I discovered that it would be impossible to see these places either by bus or by train.First we stopped at the Marble Mountains, a site just about 40 minutes drive from Hoi An. You climb up a mountain, the entrance ticket includes a map of the site and a set of postcards.Up the mountain you have a beautiful view of the area and the South china Sea. The site has a number of pagodas and temples and some caves with buddha statues in them.It is a lovely spot and is full of Vietnamese praying and lighting incense in the caves. WE enjoyed the place very much. The climb up is a little steep but you will see old and young scrambling up to see the view.It is called Marble Mountain because they excavate Marble there to be used for carving marble statues.AT the base of the mountain are numerous...

Trek in Sapa

by piglet44

We took a day trek in Sapa which was hard for us (everyone else was young and fit!) but well worth it.We arrived at Sapa on the overnight train the Livitrans, which was booked for us by the hotel Thai Binh in Sapa.Train cost $30 per person and was reasonably comfortable. I managed to sleep okay, Danny who was on the top bunk less so.Toilet was clean. We shared a carriage with two other people and this was actually fun because you got to chat with someone new each way. On the top bunk was a young Vietnamese guy whom we could not talk to,but on the bottom was a guy who was born in Vietnam but left to live in the US ,Wisconsin ,and had married there and come back to bring his family to visit Vietnam. He was very charming and translated stuff for us now and then.On arrival in Sapa we were met by a minibus from the hotel (5am!)and taken to the hotel where we got breakfast and a shower. Then at...

Markets

by dancinbudgie

It doesn't matter which city you go to in Vietnam, you will find markets. There are indoor markets, outdoor markets, big markets and small markets. There are even markets that come to you...well sort of...does a lady selling all kinds of stuff from a boat count? Anyway...you can find anything and everything in these places, and they can offer some good bargains if you are on the hunt for souveneirs, but the best part of being in the market is simply the experience itself! I had a romantic vision in my head of what the markets would be when we first arrived in Vietnam. I had read about the 'smells' of market area's, and was all prepared for the exotic, spicy kind...I was horrified at first to discover instead that it was more like the rank, putrid kind! It DID take some getting used to...but hey...it's all part of the fun isn't it?

Hai Van Pass

by dancinbudgie

This is a spectacular way to make the journey from Hue to Hoi An! The views are truly magnificent, but it is not for the faint of heart! The hairpin bends are the hairiest I have seen anywhere. Bus drivers are absolutely crazy...we were amazed to see them tearing up the mountain with a 'spotter' hanging out the door to get a view of what was coming further up the road because the driver obviously couldn't see from where he sat! I was almost sick watching it...I don't know how the passengers stood it! We hired a car and driver to make our trip, which I think is one of the safer options. At the top of the pass we stopped to take photo's...not easy to do whilst being harrassed from all sides by pushy vendors! nevertheless...I am glad we made the trip and would highly recommend it.

Cyclo Ride

by dancinbudgie

We heard terrible things about cyclo drivers in the South, and our hotel handed out a flyer which warned about making use of the service as well, so we just caught cabs in Saigon. We did however, use cyclo's a couple of times while we were in the north in Hanoi and in central vietnam while at Hue. Mostly in Hanoi we prefered to walk, but occaisionally little Brad would just get too tired, and a cyclo was the perfect solution to give him a break. In Hue, we experienced Vietnam's heat for the first time, and were grateful for the cyclo option to tour the citadel in. We were lucky in Hue with our drivers. They were friendly, fair and informative. In Hanoi we had a couple of glitches which I really think were communication problems, but nothing too serious. My advice to anyone hiring a cyclo would be to simply make sure payment is discussed and agreed upon before getting in. Be...

Temples and Pagoda's

by dancinbudgie

You don't have to look too hard anywhere in Vietnam to find some very beautiful Temples and Pagodas. Pictured are some of the ones that I enjoyed the most, Cao Dai Holy See in Tay Ninh, Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue, Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Phuc Kien Assembly Hall in Hoi An and Vinh Trang Pagoda in the Mekong Delta. They represent just some of the religious philosophies that can be found in this amazing country. Some are listed below with a brief explanation of where they originate and what the main beliefs are...very brief...I know very little other than what I gleaned from guide books...my apologies...but even knowing nothing you can still enjoy the temples.* Buddhism, both Mahayana (from China) and Theravada (from India).* Taoism, which is about living in harmony with the earth.* Confucianism, from China, teaches loyalty to the state and the family.* Cao Daism, combines the above...
