Water Puppet Theater, Hanoi
It cost a mere 3 dollars for first class seats and comes with paper fan and cassette!! For so little price, it was trully an authentic entertainment. I have seen all kinds of puppet shows...but this is very different.
There are several shows daily, we took the 8-9 pm show.
I had read about this ancient entertainment, which dates back as far as 11th century.
Water puppetry is popular during the flooding seson, mostly in Red River Delta provinces.
Many many puppets were used in the performance; it really intrigued me by the ability of the puppets hands to move and wave, the legs to flip etc. The puppet show is accompanied by a small orchestra, all local Vietnamese instruments, and very very unique ones, complete with narration...albeit in Vietnamese. The story line used based on local life, like fishing, mythical animals dances and possibly a historical ones as well etc.
I realise water puppet theatre may not be everyone's cup of tea mine included!!!
We paid 40,000 VND included in the price was a paper fan and a tape recording of the music played by the Vietnamese orchestra during the performance. The show only lasts about 1 hour and is well worth going to see. The performance started at 8pm and the theatre is air conditioned.
Water Puppets are a really nice and different experience, a real must when U come to Hanoi.
You will find the theatre at the north east bank of the Hoan Kiem Lake.
There are 2 performances everyday, 18:30 and 21:30. If U have time, reserve in advance, they might be complete for the same day.
Dress Code: If you wanna make photos inside, you will have to pay an extra fee.
BUT.... I didn't, and nobody told me anything about that or asjed for the camera voucher. Anyway, I just took a couple of pics :-)))))
