You'll find everything under the sky here at cheap, cheap prices. Really, if you've been to Ben Tanh Market in Saigon, this is Hanoi's equivilent. I got pretty silk bags here for less than US10 here. Quite a steal compared to the touristy prices at Hang Gai Street! The reason? This is a wholesale centre!
Silk embroidered bags, ao dais, silk ties, silk hankies, etc.
Don't pay more than USD10 for a silk bag or USD20 for an ao dai or ao zai. Those conical hats go for USD2 or less. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: At the corner of Pho Hang KhoaiDirections: At the corner of Pho Hang Khoai. Smack in the centre of the Old Quarters

Before the TET festival, locals are busy buying up everything they will need during the actual festival days. Prices go up the closer you go to TET and during TET, you are at everyone's mercy so stock up.
We bought five liter bottles of water and refiled our smaller bottles to carry around with us. This saved us a lot of money and if you have a fridge in your room, buy some fruits and snacks in case you find yourself with no food during TET.
Pay 15,000 dong ($1) for a five liter bottle of water. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: If you walk from the Old Quarter to the Ho Chi Minh complex, there are heaps of cheap places all over.

Although the shop is not big, the merchanise is nicely displayed. It has a good range of silk Aodai's, scarves, men's ties & shirts. It also sells wood handicrafts & their products are of reasonably good quality. The staff were pleasant & very helpful. The shop offers only a minimal discount but their marked prices are reasonable, compared to the many other touristy shops that I visited. It is very close to the famous Water Puppet Theatre and faces the Hoan Kiem Lake.
I bought this Aodai as my Lunar New Year outfit and I bought for my daughters too. They loved them!
Aodai's like mine are priced between USD25-45 and the quality is good. Wooden handicrafts are available from USD8 upwards, men's silk ties from USD15. Come every Sunday, the main road in the Old Quarters are closed to traffic at night and it becomes a giant shopping street! Even if you don't buy anything, it is a quite a treat to watch the locals shopping at night.
Look out for Chinese Brush Paintings and Vietnamese Silk Bags.
Don't be a sucker and pay more than USD20 for these items Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Hang Dao to Dong Xuan Street, Old Quarters

This not-for-profit boutique is located near the Temple of Literature. The two-storey shop is set up to promote a source of income and skill among the minority ethnic groups in Vietnam. Its slogan, "Seeking new markets for traditional artisans" are printed everywhere, including on the price tags. In Hanoi, you have to remember that you get what you pay. Goods sold in this shop has fixed price tags but the products of high-grade quality. I bought a hand-made evening bag and it's worth every cent. The efforts that went behind making the bag were tremendous hard work! Ex-President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, visited the shop in Nov 2001. The photographs of their visit were displayed in the shop.
The shop is well-stocked with handicraft, from clothes, gifts and furniture items, which are made by the minority ethnic groups. If you want some quality gifts for your loved ones, go for this shop.
Prices start from as little as USD8 for small purses and gifts. Take a look and help to contribute to the minority ethnic groups in Vietnam. Many fruit vendors work hard plying the streets on foot, balancing a long pole with baskets at each end on their shoulders. I stopped one & bought 2 kg of Mangoes (10 Mangoes) . Then I noticed a fruit I had not seen before. It was green in colour, like an apple but rounder. I was curious to taste them and the vendor was obliging enough to let me swap two of my mangos for two of these fruits. They had a bitter & sour taste which didn't appeal to me or my children and looked pretty bad (off white) after I cut them open them a few days later. The mangoes however, were delicious. Unfortunately, they didn't travel well and a few were bruised by the time I got them back to Malaysia. Next time I'll just buy my mangoes at the local pasar malam! I've since found out the name of the mysterious fruit-it is called the star apple. Please see the picture of what it looks like. The pulp of the fruit was off-white, similar in texture to a custard apple and came with large black seeds. My take on it is that I much prefer the taste of custard apples or sour-sop anytime.
After some gentle bargaining, I got my mangos at 21,000 dong/kg. (15,000 dong = USD 1.00) Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: Look out for them on the streets

While you're shopping at Dong Xuan, you'll be wondering why this spanking new 3 storey complex is standing in the middle of the Old Quarters. Here's why in 1994, the market was destroyed in a fire. 5 sods rushed in to save their goods and died... Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: At the corner of Pho Hang Khoai

If you need to get bottles of mineral water, cans of soft drinks and other snacks, and if you find the prices of these items too high at your hotel's bar, check out Intimex Supermarket. I happened to chance upon this place while searching for Fanny Ice Cream. It's on the western side of Hoan Kiem Lake, tucked down a driveway hebind the Clinique beauty shop. I was mentioning in my previous tips that you for quality silk items, you have to pay little more. However, for those who wish to have reasonable priced tailor-made Ao-Dai, you don't need to bust your pocket. Just head for the Luong Van Can Street, perpendicular to Hang Gai Street, and you will be amazed by rows and rows of shops offering tailoring services and selling a wide range of material for your clothes.
You can get your clothes tailor-made in this stretch. I did an ao-dai for my cousin (I got her go give me her measurements) and the shop did the ao-dai in two days' time (note unlike in HCMC and shops in Hang Gai Street, you don't get your clothes made in a day). The materials may not be as good as those found in Hang Gai but you will still be spoilt with choices.
I got an ao-dai tailored for about USD 25 as my cousin is on the plump side and hence, she required more material. If you are slim, the cost would be less. Leave a Comment Theme: Women's ClothesAddress: Luong Van Can Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi
