Out of Hanoi: Halong Bay Inland
  • Tip Rating:
  • A visit to Hoa Lu is a worthy day trip out from Hanoi. Considered to be the Halong Bay in land, this has some stunning scenery. Start with a walk up to Bich Dong temple before setting off on your sampan tour of the waterways. A relaxing day away from the traffic of Hanoi. The journey to Hoa Lu is entertaining itself - see how many different 'cargos' you can spot on the mopeds and bicycles.

In the evenings we would go for a walk near Hoan Kiem Lake located in the middle of Hanoi. Its name means "The Lake of the Restored Sword", referring to a 15th-century legend in which the nobleman Le Loi, who fought for the Vietnamese against Ming China, received his sword from a magic turtle living in the lake. The nobleman defeated the Ming and returned home in victory. One day, the emperor was boating in the lake when the turtle surfaced demanding the sword's return. In memory of this event, the emperor built the Tortoise Tower on an island at the south end of the lake. Enormous turtles still live in the lake today. When they are spotted, it is supposed to herald the death of one of the country's leaders. Some say the turtles are brought to the lake. What do you think?

Walking arround: Pho Hang Bong - Cotton street
  • Tip Rating:
  • No, Hanoi doesn't have marvellous monuments to look at. The charming of Hanoi is it's peaceful atmotphere, cool air in the early morning, smilling and friednly people, graceful french-time houses with green windows, lively scenary along small streets,... so the pleasant fun is just walking around. Being an oriental country (and communist now), the red is popular, always appears in the wedding, national festival, sport events,.... Here is an evidence, a treet called "Hang Dao" means "Red Street". This street is used to trade cloths, which were mostly in red colour, starts from Hoan Kiem Lake and links to "Hang Bong", which means "Street of cotton" and Hang Bong is link to "Tho Nhuom", which means "Street of dyers". So imagine these streets are like a chain of textile work in the past and now could be considered as "Silk road" in Hanoi, where most of silk shops located. This reflects the specialization of imigrations from traditional villages to Hanoi. While Hanoi was a "lady in red" on the National day, this woman seems to be uneventful because all her life is belong to this "Red Flag" shop.

If you are not able to visit Sapa, then this is the place you should go during your visit to Hanoi. The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology features a wide collection of art and daily items gathered from the various tribal groups in Vietnam. The collection is fascinating and you can see the efforts and pain taken to introduce the ethnic groups to visitors. What I like about the museum is that it takes the efforts to have an open air space, exhibiting the types of houses stayed by the groups. It was a great experience especially I don't have the time to spare to travel to Sapa. Though this place is far away from Central, you shouldn't miss it. The building of the Museum was also assisted by the French.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Obey the rules
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the most important site in Hanoi for all loyal Vietnamese people. Ho Chi Minh, the nation's hero, is laid out there (btw, against his will - he wanted to be cremated!). Be prepared to see hundreds of people waiting for a short glimpse of his body. Uncle Ho is presented there for 9 months - the other 3 months of the year, his body is restaurated in Moscow. Everybody has to obey certain rules when visiting the mausoleum. Do obey them, as the guards may become unfriendly quite quickly!

The Presidential Palace, formerly called the General Governor for Indochina, is surrounded by beautiful mango trees. Today, it is used for official receptions and not opened to public. Beautiful...
